SEASON I referred my Oxford dictionary for the meaning of theword- Season.
One most common meaning is the periods in to which the yearis divided according to weathercondition. Second is a condition in which a particular activity is doneeg: - cricket, musicconcert etc. The third meaning is a to keep wood so as to use it fortimber. One can see at all times wood kept in Kallayi River for timber use.Many timber merchants keep the wood as it is; some saw and make to specifiedmeasurements, The fourth meaning a seasoned person- in travel, dealingwith an activity etc. There are some seasoned persons in all fields. There areseasoned travellers- frequently travelling and staying in different countries.Seasoned writers, seasoned directors of films, seasoned farmers etc. Fifth meaning is adding flavour -Thalippu. Now it is a period of more availability in varieties ofmangoes and jackfruits- A season for them. Though availability is more, and itemsare perishable, still prices are high only. It made me to recollect the flower merchantsin Chaplain- Trivandrum. If at all they dump in waste the not sold flowers nextday, still they won’t reduce their rate. Whether entire plantain in the Kula is sold or not,merchants calculate the price and fix for 50% of the plantains in the Kula. 50%of plantains are considered perishing before sale. It was in fact a few years back I learnt the meaning of theword season adding items for flavour mustard, curry leaves etc. are fried andadded for seasoning. There is a lot of taste difference between chutni andsambar before and after seasoning. In Chennai now it is hot summer- It is difficult to go outeven at 9 AM- Even at 6 PM hot wind is blowing. However temperature is lesser comparingto Rajasthan temperature. People goearly morning and wait for covidvaccination. With passI had to go to a nearby Tambaram for a work in Taxi. Most animals have a season for mating. During the month of mesham, Kanippo- Konna would beflowering. For stationary merchant’s school opening period is a seasonof selling books and allied items. Though the pilgrimage to Sabarimala is there now everymonth, still Mandalam and Makara Vilakku periods are told as season. Most of the temple festivals occur in a particular period.It is called festival time. Mosquito breed and bite more at a particular period.Similarly flies are more at a particular time. There are periods for cultivation. There are specificgrowing periods for the plants and trees. In winter the air conditioning units are sold at a lesserrate to push up sales. There is aadikizhivu for items like textiles in Tamilnadu. Now it isextended to Tamilnadu also as aadikizhivu, in addition to Onam season There is a period of processing mango Thira, mango juices etc.for preservation. Similarly for preparing sugar from sugar canes. There is fare reduction in flights during passengers lowseason. Satellites are placed to orbits during favourable time of climate. Summer season is school vacation period. Earlier daysstudents used to learn typewriting and shorthand. Now most children simply passtime with their I phone.
