WAITING (KAATHIRIPPU)

 Dearfriends,

A recentsoap in the Flowers TV (Malayalam TV Channel) is PRIYANKARI. Among
other programmes thechannel  advertise about this soap andforthcoming incidents
with a request- Marakkathe Kanuka (Watch withoutforgetting) or wait for 7PM,
the broadcast time.

My normal eveningtiffin time is at 7 PM. So Nowadays I finish tiffin before 7
PM, waiting to see the soap.

The famouslines of film KARUNAcame to my mind today-Samayamayillapolum,
samayamayilla polum, Kshama entae hridayathil ozhinjuthozhi

(Original Sanskrit play by Subandhu- Vasavadattha)

Somewaiting are pleasurable. Some are with anxiety and a lot more are
withenjoyment and a few are inevitable with mixed feelings and a few
withsorrow.   Mostly I write keeping my TV in some channel and hearing, with
more concentration to my writing. Let me go in to waiting.

 Sincerely,

GopalaKrishnan 22-6-2021

1. Waiting for interview by candidates

This iswith most anxiety to get through when the candidate having no other
employmentand   the candidate and frantically trying for one.

Allpreparations are made, pullayar is offered Vedali and sakunam is seen
andstarted well in advance with all documents etc.

Theanxiety level gets reduced when already on a job. They just try for a
changefor the working pattern problems.  Ponal Pokattum poda, podawill be the
attitude of these candidates.

Whenlooking for an improvement of finance, absolutely there is no anxiety at
all. Ihave not seen any person at this level preparing for the interview at
all. Theygo simply casual. Only thinking if got through there would be
financial improvement.

While Iwas starting to Trivandrum for interview as Lecturer in the
engineeringtraining centre, my son asked while waiting to board the train- Do
not haveanxiety. I will be earning from next year. He was in the final year for
BE.

When I wascalled and informed  that I am selectedfor Training centre, anxiety
was to my wife- How to manage alone home with two children studying  Of course
she enjoyed on the 50% pay increase   sincemy finance was not sound at that
time.

 2. Waiting to write the theory examinations.

Most ofthe students well prepare for the examination. Here the waiting is for
theexamination days and reach the examination hall without forgetting to take
hallticket and good pens the time. The anxiety point is very less here.

Coming tohigher IAS, IPS,departmental promotion etc., many take them in the
first attempt as casual asto see the standard of questions. After that they
will prepare and write. Hereabsolutely there is no anxiety. In the subsequent
attempts there can be anxietyto ensure what they have prepared should come as
questions.

My sonwondered after writing preliminary IAS- Appa, it is in the school, three
persons in abench and normal desk. Having large number of candidates, schools
also were  selected for preliminary examination inChennai during 1992’s.

 3. Practical Examinations in the college.

Thepractical examinations in the college are most tensioned ones. It is first
ofall conducted after so many days after theory. Secondly, though
manyexperiments are done, every student know, there will be twisting in the
practical questions.

Theanxiety is for the practicalexamination. The questions are written in the
answer papers top by aprofessor from some other college. The papers would be
placed in a table in theentrance, question sidedown. The first student as per
roll number has compulsorily to takethe top one, next candidate, next one on
the top. Last candidate as per rollnumber has to take the last paper. The lucky
would get easy question/answerscoring higher marks.

There is asaying – Odi poyavanu onpatha midathil guru, aka pettavanu
ashtamathi sani.In simple words the fortunate get easier questions.

Those whoare lucky get some what easy questions or from topics where 100%
marks aregiven when correct. Those who are unlucky get tough questions or from
topicswhere 80% marks are given even when fully correct.

I was in the latter group when I attended my practical examination for
graduation which loweredvery much my rank.

 4. Anxiety to start main film

In thetheatres, it is very few who listen to News reel and wait for the main
film. Many feel to see the continuance of film, the interval as boring. Now in
multiplexesentrance charges are less, but refreshment charges are very high.
Acoffee/tea about Rs 100-00 like in the airports.

The mostimportant anxiety is with fear in theatre when going with family.
Prayers bykids- no tall man should be in front. For elders- No fellow with
liquor shouldcome next. They would be waiting with anxiety to have a family man
to comenear.

For theYoungsters- their interested companies should be there. Not for seeing
thefilm, but spending time (mostly girls) they would have come to the theatre.

 4a. Nampoothiri and English film

Once a Nampoothiriwent to an English film in the theatre. Nampoothiri was
attracted to a bathingscene. When the lady jumped to water with little dress, a
train passing was pictured.By the time the train crossed the river the lady got
up with dress.

Nampoothiritook the ticket for a 2nd time. Alas, still the train was running.

Nampoothiricame to counter. Nampoothiri told the counter man- Eathayalum oru
ticket kootaetharuka. Nampoothiri continued- Aaa sthree kulikkan kathirikkaya
train vitan.Eprayasyavum nokkatte enganayannu. (The train is waiting to run
while the bath scenecomes. Let me see this time)

 5. Waiting in the airport for departure.

Passengershave to arrive at least one and half hour before flight’s departure
and threehours before international departure. There will always be anxiety to
reach theaerodrome.

The beautyis time passing would not be known though arrived so earlier because
of thedifferent formalities. Mostly in international airports most may get a
friendfor talking while waiting to enter the aeroplane.

I read recently an emirates plane left Chennaiairport with one passenger.
Observing allformalities, there was only one passenger. But the flight had to
return toDubai, to bring passengers.

heanxiety is for the waiting relatives at airport- whether excess weight
isthere? They would be ready with bags if any to be taken out as excess
luggage.Security check does not become a problem for those observing
formalities duringthis covid 19 periods.

All parent’sanxiety cannot be told, till they reach the foreign country and
call fromthere.

 7. Waiting for arrival of relatives andpicking up

This is ananxious time waiting for. When the flight is announced late it is
irritatingwith anxiety. When once a display of flight landed there is sudden
drop ofanxiety from 80% to 10%.

About trains. Now 95%passengers go alone and return. Waiting and receiving by
relatives is a case ofpast. Passengers are less due to covid 19. Emergency
passengers only travel now in train

8. Anxiety at temple and Bus stop.

In thetemple there is some times a boring waiting when the pooja for
deepradhana takesmore time. Many people just pray and leave, I have seen in
temples. Thisincludes me.

Theanxiety at bus stop/bus station waiting is complex. Some people desire
thebuses should not come, since they wait for somebody to come and join.  Some
people desire to wait more still lesscrowded buses come. It was a practice for
me to wait for deluxe or expressbuses which are not crowded, leaving others
while working at Trivandrum. Wewere paid travelling allowance and not official
vehicle.

9. Sorrow and pain full waiting

In thehospital when complex operations are performed, relatives wait with
sorrow toensure it might be successful. They may pray all gods. Similarly the
patients.

About 13years back   I was admitted with stomach pain in emergencyward in the
midnight. I was watching TV and suddenly felt unbearable pain. After shifting to
room only the anxiety and perplexed face of my wife gotreduced slightly. In
such moments one minute will pass through as one hour tothe waiting. My wife
was calling every 2 minutes the traveller for Taxi to go.

 10. One hour is equal to one minute

While dressing, women might feel one hour as one minute. For the waiting
husband one minute mightappear as one hour.

 11. Anxious moments

When awoman is admitted for delivery the waiting is painful to the woman and
anxiousto the relatives.

Thesimilar is the case with those in the serious stage.

Much more are there to write about waiting in the river bed, bathing Ghats, sea
shore, fishing andreturn, cooking etc. etc.
