KOSIR

Dearfriends,

Theapproximate meaning of Kosir can be a small amount of money given in
addition toaccounted money given.

Pocketmoney is given for personal expenses for children and many times for
elderstoo. But kosir is given mostly for children studying and have no income
andmost important- NO QUESTIONING ABOUT KOSIR IS DONE. Sometimes home makers
tooare given kosir in addition to pocket money.

We mayask- “I have given pocket money- What happened?” But such a question does
notarise about Kosir. We should not ask what happened to the kosir.

Thisposting is about kosir and nostalgic memories of Kosir.

Sincerely,

GopalaKrishnan 2-3-2013.

 1. Appa kosir ellam amma vangara..

While mydaughter was studying in college in 1990’s , in addition to pocket
money,  I used to give kosir once a week. My wifewhen requiring changes used to
ask her and never return. She used to give fromKosir. One day she exclaimed-
Rendu roopa, moonnuroopa, evalavu thanKudukkarathu? ( Tworupees, three rupees,
how much I can give and not returning?).

So oneday she told me- Appa increase frequency and amount of kosir more. All
kosir isgiven to  Amma and she never return.  Now too we use to talk of it and
laugh.

 2. Appa, kosir ellam eri pochhu, minimumkosir- patthu roopa ( Kosir has to be
increased.Minimum should be ten rupees)

EngineeringCollege near Kanchipuram, once a week he would come from lodge, and
next weekexpense money along with pocket money and Kosir was given. I was
working atRanipet 2 hour journey from Kanchipuram.

Since keepingmore money was not safe in the lodge the above procedure was
followed. This wasduring 1989’s. One day after giving his accounts and pocket
money, I gave himRs 7-00. Rs 7-00 was sufficient and more for a tiffin. He
smiled and said- Appa, minimum kosir 10-00 roopa. There onwards I increased the
kosir torupees 15-00. As with daughter my wife would  ask him get pickles and
miscellaneous  things which he used to obtain from pocketmoney and kosir too. I
increased pocket money by 75% once I  came to know of it.

 3. Pati-(Pocket money)

Being homemaker, my wife is given pocket money, now by three people- My son  in
larger figures  , daughter occasionallyas good figures, and my monthly pocket
money. Somehow it got named as PATI.

I am notsure how we named it so. When I give monthly accounts- as DA increase,
arequirement of pati increase  was also  asked/given. But multiple DA increase
occurs!!

Now a dayPati has gone high. Apartfrom this kosir is given and TAKEN from the
purse. This is kosirtaken by herself. Knowing requirements for temple thattu
etc., I always keepchanges for 50-00 rupees in the drawer. But ladies do not
normally put morethan Rs 5-00 being regular visitor.

4. Childhood kosir?.

In thechild hood days, my relative’s wife (very elder) used to give for
gettingprovision items from shops some sort of kosir. This used to be about 50
paise ,balance after purchasing things. If she require frequent things, she
used toincrease it or give more, most of the time. This was with the intention
weshould not refuse to oblige.    But lateras we grew, we used to get things
for her, while we go for purchase. Getting kosir from her was feltdelicacy. She
realised our growth, later workers used to get thingsfor her.

As far asworkers are concerned, it was a normal practice to increase the
marketpurchased items without bill by 15%.

5. Kosir for self

This ismost important. For our personal expenses we set apart an amount. Over
thatkosir is kept. This kosir is unaccounted with purpose. It can be a
sweetfruitmix or pakkoda on way walk or sweet plantains or adjusted for not
gettingbalance after getting a ticket etc. etc. This gave consolation to a
certainextent in the last case.
