NEEDLE- SOOCHI PART1

Respectedfriends,

I was foldingmy washed shirts today.  I found one ofthe middle buttons is not
there in a shirt. Fortunately there were two buttonsstitched inside the shirt.
I took myneedle box.  I selected one mediumneedle. My wife inserted the thread
and gave me. With scissor I removed one ofthe spare buttons. Stitched somehow
in the location and folded and kept. Whileselecting the needle many things came
to my memory.

I wentthrough about history of the needle, types of needles etc.  in Wikipedia.
I thought my posting can beabout needles today.

A sewingneedle, used for hand-sewing, is a long slender tool with a pointed tip
at oneend and a hole (or eye) at the other. The earliest needles were made of
bone orwood; modern needles are manufactured from high carbon steel wire and
arenickel- or 18K gold-plated for corrosion resistance. Before going to
compiledinformation, I thought of writing some INTERESTING INFORMATION came to
mymemory about needle.

Sincerely,

Gopala Krishnan4-7-2021.

1 Elephant and tailor story

One cannotforget the elephant and tailor story studied in primary class.
Toyoungsters   if any in this group, thestory is summarized below.

It was apractice for a mahout to take the elephant for bathing through a road,
wherethere was a tailor shop. The tailor used to give plantains to the
elephantwhile going for bath. One day while the elephant came to the shop
extended it’strunk for plantain, and tailor instead of giving plantain, using a
needle slightly piercedit’s trunk end. On return the elephant came with water
in trunk, stopped before the shop and pour on tailor. Entire shop got wetted.

The story istold for the nature of elephant, if it is disturbed, it would also
disturb.Elephant has sharp memory.

I have read elsewhere snakes also have sharpmemory. If it is disturbed, it
would recognize the person and area, it wouldcome and bite one day.

But my part of the story – Thetailors had such big needles to pierce the trunk
end, which is very sensitive.

Such a bigelephant may die if ants pierce the trunk of the elephant. Hence
while itrelaxes, elephants keep the trunk inside mouth.

2. Mahabharatha

While LordKrishna was pleading for fivevillages for residing of Pandavas,
Duryodhana replied- I would not giveeven that space to pierce a needle to
Pandavas. During Dwapara yuga use ofneedles was very common.

3. The boy became rich by removing the needle fromwalking path.

I have readof a poor boy who became later famous and rich. The boy was
walking through the road. He found a needlelying in the road. Thinking that it
may pierce a person coming barefoot, hetook it and throw it faraway. This was
observed by a rich man. He brought upthe boy and he became famous. I am not
able to recollect the person.

4. Purchase of needle

One cannotpurchase needle after sunset from the shop. It is considered unlucky
for theseller.

5. Talking like inserting needle

This is asaying meant of a person who talk in such a manner, so that he might
achievewhat he require. In my home, a sasthrikal was there. He would not tell
directlyhis charges. He would describe the details of the various items he has
toperform, and then tell the charges for each. Pleasingly the kartha would
agreeto the amount. Secret is his rate might be excess than other sasthrikals!!

6. Pairing

Unless properneedle is there, no purpose of having any quality threads. For
stitching jutebags, though one is having jute thread, the bigger needle is
required.

One cannotstich pant cloth, with the needle using for shirt stitching. It
requires thickneedle.

7. Needle shops

Thoughnormally one can get needle and thread from fancy stores, most tailors
gettheir requirement of needles, threads and buttons from these shops.  Once I
have gone to a needle shop atThambaram, I found it was busy with customers and
I was attended after twominutes. Sales in these shops are more than one would
imagine. I have one of mynephews worked in a needle shop as manager in Dubai.
Now he is in Kochi.

8 Other uses of needle

A mediumneedle is used to take thorns from the sole of the feet. Normally
anotherperson could locate the thorn bit by pressing different areas near
paining, andlocate a black spot. Just tearing a little skin, thorn would be
removed. Onecannot tell the pain he is having, with a thorn bit.

9 Large size needles

For stitchingjute bags, large size needle is there. Most homes will have at
least two orthree. A cleaned such needle is used to see the fried condition of
appam in themould and pick it up after proper frying in olden days. However now
vesselshops have special needles for it. Any piercing jute needle is
usedcommonly.

10 Pain on body

There is a sayingpain on the body is same, ifat all the needle is made of gold.
This is mean to say, hurt is sameto the affected person if at all he is rich,
relative or any other.

Some membersin the group use hurting language. They do not feel how it would
affect other.Only when such hurting is felt by him, he would understand the
pain.

I had asenior officer who used to call subordinates with Ayya. In Tirunelveli
side it is a word of respect. But not in Chennai. After hearing four days, I
purposely called him, addressingEnnayya, eppidi irukke. The way he used to talk.
From next day he changed addressing me as Mr. GopalaKrishnan, but started
finding fault with me, since he was insulted, using hisown words back.

Other wordsused by certain wealthy iyers are varum, ukkarum instead of vanga,
ukkarunga to others. If theother person addresses him in the same manner-
finished. His Saturn period has started on that day.

The firstiyer consider the other inferior. But if the other is a wealthy
person, sasthrikal or swamiji, his language will be vanga, not varum!!

I will continue in next posting.
