DIVINE INFORMATION PART 107 361 SriMadh Bhagavatham..part 39 PRACHETAS RENUNCIATION
Prachetas, on whomsuperior wisdom had dawned, remembered the command of the Lord, left their spouse to the care of son Daksha and departed. They dwelt on the sea-shore in the west, where Jajali attained spiritual consummation, and set their mind on the Lord with total control on breath and senses. Sage Narada arrivedand after obeisance, the Prachetas sought of Narada divine light to cross thecycle of births and deaths. The praiseworthy and worshipful sage Narada instructed Prachetasthus: Sri Hari is the onebeloved goal of all beings and the dispenser of self-realization. All that pleases Hari is righteous andeverything otherwise is futile, be it sacred study, Tapas, good strengthor efficient senses, Yogicpractice, ascetic life or self-denial. Lords worship is the worship ofeverything, just as pouring water at the root of a tree nourishes its trunk, branches and twigs. Sri Hari is the indweller in all embodied existence. The Lord is time, material, cause and Supreme ruler. Naradacontinued: Of what use is anything, however great and holy it may be termed, unless they are all devoted to Sri Hari. Of all the blessings, the attainment ofliberation is the supreme. Just aswater comes from the sun as rain andreturns to him as vapor in summer heat and just as all beings are of the earth and to the earth they return, sodo all these creations from Sri Hari return to Him.This universe is an expression of the Supreme Spirit (Lord)apart from which it has no separateexistence. Just as in the sky, theclouds, darkness and light appear byturns, so do the qualities of Prakriti, like Tamas, Rajas and Sattva, appear and vanish in the Atman. By His prowess, He remains unmoved amidst the movement ofPrakriti. Meditate on Him in truthand in spirit as the Soul of yoursoul. The Lord is pleased with one who is kind to all beings, who is content withwhat he has and who has control overhis senses. The heart of a devotee which has been cleansedof all desires and which, throughcontinuous and longing meditation, has invited Him to reside therein is never bereft of His presence. The Lord could be bound by His devotee. Sri Hari, who is fond of devotees who lookupon Him alone as their wealth, has anunfailing sense of taste and does not approve of theworship and offerings made by persons who are proud of their learning, wealth, lineage, achievements, etc. and who entertain an indifferent or inimical attitudetowards genuine devotees. The Lordis by Himself absolute. The Lords preference for His true, lovingand yearning devotee excels His concerneven for Goddess Sri, let alone the others who are seekers of worldly wealth. What man, with even a little sense of gratitude, would cease worshippingHim?? Thus guiding thePrachetas, Sage Narada departed for the Brahmaloka. The Prachetas then became absorbed in those sanctifying the excellence of the Lord that were narrated bythe sage and while so contemplating, attained to the Supreme abode. The lineage ofUttanapada, the son of Swayambhuva Manu and Satarupa, emanations from Brahma, formed up to Prachetas. Priyavarta, brother of Uttanapada, who ruled over the kingdom and was instructed inthe knowledge of Atman, divided thekingdom among his sons, renounced worldly life and attained the divine. Whoever hears thisaccount of the kingly lines devoted to the Supreme Lord with faith and devotionwill attain longevity, wealth, fame, good luck, prosperity and final release. 362 SKANDAM V PRIYAVRATA Priyavrata, born of Svayambhuva Manu andSatarupa, both of whom being emanations from Brahma, instructed by sageNarada, had resolved to worship the Lord through a Brahmasatra. However, possessed with ruler ship qualities, he acquiesced in hisfather’s desire and opted to rule as offerings to the Lord, as cattle, bound bytheir nose strings do the bidding oftheir masters. The body undergoes the ordained experiences and our state is none otherthan that of a blind man helplessly following the one with eyes. The body is endowed as per theeligibility, undergoing sufferings and pleasures depending on our Karma. Spiritual degradation ensueseven in if one retires to the forestwithout control over senses. Conversely, the enlightened man with sense-control comes to no harm even inhouseholder’s life. Thus, Priyavratahaving conquered the six-fold enemy (Kama, Krodha, Lobha, Moha, Madha and Matsarya), can stillattain the LordтЩs abode at theend of his ruler ship, in detachment. Svayambhuva Manu, with Sage Naradas permission, enthroned Priyavarta and set on renunciation. Priyavrata entered onrulership only as a command of theSupreme Lord. He married Barhishmati, the daughter of Prajapati Visvakarma and begot ten sons(Agnidhra & others) and a daughter, by name Urjaswati. Three of the sons resorted to spiritual life from boyhood itself. Priyavrata also hadthree sons through his otherwife. By his superhuman spiritual powers, Priyavrata circumambulated Mount Meru seven times alongthe course of the sun and following the sun. The ruts caused by Priyavartaschariot became the seven oceansdividing the earth into seven Dweepas (continents islands) called Jambudweepaand so on. In each of these Dweepas, Priyavrata installed his sons. Priyavratas daughterUrjaswati was married to Maharishi Sukra, whose daughter was the renownedDevayani. Urged by the senseof renunciation, Priyavrata gave up all the comforts of rulership, includinghis loving wife, and resorted to the path of renunciation, as already imparted bysage Narada and attained the acme ofspirituality. 363 AGNIDHRA Agnidhra, son ofPriyavrata and Barhishmati, was ruling the kingdom righteously. Desirous ofbegetting progeny, he performed austerities in the valleys of Mandara mountain, where the Apsara lady Purvachitti, deputedby Brahma, caught his attention. Agnidhra was overwhelmed by her charms and vice versa, culminating intheir enjoying heavenly pleasures on earth and begetting nine sons, Nabhi andothers. All were of unsurpassed beautyand velour. Agnidhramade them rulers of the nine regions ofJambudweepa and constantly engaged himself in rituals for attaining the world of PurvachittiApsaras, whose bewitching charm hadenslaved him to her. Agnidhrafinally reached Purvachitti in her ownrealm in his next birth. The nine sons of Agnidhra and Purvachitti marriedthe nine daughters of Mount Meru. NABHI Nabhi, son ofAgnidhra and Purvachitti, performed a Yajna for begetting progeny, where theLord manifested Himself and was praised by the sacrificial priests and the king. TheLord responded, saying, the boon you have asked of Me, viz. that theking should have a son equal to Me, isalmost impossible to accomplish, as I am destitute of an equal. Yet you are devoted to truthand the words of Vedic adherents should not go in vain, for they are verilyfrom My mouth. Thus hallMyself be born with a part of Myself as the son of Nabhi, the son of Agnidhra. Announcing this toNabhi and his wife Merudevi, the Lord disappeared. The Lord incarnated as the son of Agnidhra and Merudevi withthe name Rishabha and as a teacher of the world.
