Q1 What are some thingsthat existed in medieval Europe that most people nowadays would be surprisedabout? A1 Pieter Buis Read way to much about naval warfare August 8 Towards the very end of the Middle Ages we have a technical manuscriptdepicting a chair. If you look closely you might see that there are wheels attached to the bottom. Italso looks like the seat is arranged so that it can rotate. So… the worlds oldest office chair? I don’t know if any were made at the time but someone at leastconceptualized the trusty steed of office drones worldwide. Another thing would be an early concept of privacy. For example the Romans had public latrines that were very public indeed. Christian monks had an aversionto naked flesh (or simplyproper sense) and installed partitioning walls. Q2 What is the dark sidein almost perfect countries like Finland, New Zealand, the Netherlands,Denmark, etc.? A2 Dmitrii Eliseev Lives in The Netherlands (2015–present) Mon I think I was already answering this question, but ok, I can repeat itagain. The dark side in “perfect” countries? I can count at least two: The high salaries do not‘automatically’ guarantee you a high quality of living. I moved from Russia, which is on the 62nd place in world rating to theNetherlands, which is in the top-10, and you know what? I was paying 8$ for theinternet and now I pay 35$, I was paying 50 cents for the public transport andnow I am paying 2.5$, the kindergarten cost in the Netherlands is 1200$ (don’task me why, in the nearest Germany it is only 200$) and in Russia it was 12$,and so on… You’ve got the idea. The taxes are often higher. When you see a nice andidyllic landscape, just be aware, it is not granted for free, people areworking and paying higher taxes for that. Q3 How should one actwhen a husband remarries? A3 Remarriage without the first wife's consentis illegal in my country, India. I do not know about other countries.Remarriage happens for getting a child in case the wife is barren with her consent. Sometimes if she is bed riddenlike after a paralytic attack and there are small children, some men remarry. All other marriages which happen for love, money, convenience, gettingcitizenship are illegal. So hire a lawyer, claim alimonyand pay your lawyer from that money. Claim children if they are too small, girl child or the children want it. Thenget a job and a life. Q4 What will happen ifyou get bitten by a centipede? A4 Al Upton Vegan for Health, Diabetes Type2, Environmental and Ethical September 19 It depends. For me, the mostpainful bite/sting I’ve everhad is by a centipede. I stepped on a centipede barefoot. The pain slowly subsided over a week. When a centipede feels threatened, it will pierce the skin of its preywith the pincer-like tips of the legs closest to the head, which are calledforcipules. The bite looks like two redmarks on the skin, which forma V-shape due to the positioning of the forcipules of the centipede. What happens if you get bitten by a centipede? Typically, bite victimshave severe pain, swelling and redness at the site of the bite, with symptomsusually lasting less than 48 hours. Symptoms for those more sensitive to the venom’s effects may also includeheadache, chest pain, heart tremors, nausea and vomiting. Q5 If meteorites havebeen landing on Earth for billions of years, why hasn't the Earth had a netincrease in mass in that time? A5 Mats Andersson M Sc. in Physics & Computer Science, Uppsala University (Graduated1991) Mon It has. Earth gains about40,000 tons in one year; most of it in the form of dust that just floats downwithout anyone noticing. This sounds like a lot… until you start thinking in percentages. Over thecourse of one million years, Earth becomes heavier by one part in one hundredmillion. Or put differently, since the Earth was formed, it has become 0.004%heavier.This is… not a whole lot. Q6 What makes Kitchen Aidappliances better than other brands? A6 C. Q7 What are the signs ofa failing marriage that people outside the marriage might notice? A7 Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniam Lawyer September 19 Husband comes later and later and goes earlier and earlier Fights erupting over the smallest issue, like Husband snaps if wife askshim or empty the trash or wife snaps if husband asks for a delicious meal Money fights. Too many fightsabout money Snide remarks by Wife and husband in public against each other Spending lesser and lesser timetogether. Hubby or wife seenoutside alone but never with each other Husband and wife fight a lot and disturb the neighbors Q8 Why are railroad wheelsmade out of steel? A8 Staffan Sandström did my military service as a tank mechanic Thu Some are at least partially ofwood. A set of Mansell wheels Some metro lines use rubberwheels or acombination of both rubber and steel wheels. Trains are heavy so the wheelsneed to be able to handlethe weight. They are also less of a risk for catastrophic failure with steelwheels. Steel on steel also give very low friction so rolling is easier. Thedrawback is that it’s more difficult to go uphill. Q9 Who is the most famousperson you have met in your work? What did he ask you? A9 Gopalkrishna Vishwanath Never dated any one and yet happily married. Mon (40s/97w) Believe it or not, it was APJAbdul Kalam. He asked me several technical questions after I spoke to him for 10minutes describing the details of steel structures on a project of nationalimportance sometime in 1987–88. I was heading the design team for steelstructures in that project. I have described this meeting with him in detail in this old post. Q10 What are some moneysaving tips? A10 Sathish Kumar September 11 Today I write something which i found useful in future while shopping.Hope you guys find it useful too. Let's start………… My skin is oily so it welcomed more pimples and one of my friendsuggested me to use Clean and clear face wash so i wanted to give it a try, sowent to medical shop and the guy told he had small 20ml bottle and i brought that, it costs 20rupees. Surprisingly my pimples started to reduce after using this( I'm not doingmarketing for this product, but its my own experience ). So i wanted to buy the same product this time the guy told small bottle (20ml) sold out,50ml bottle available. I okayed to buy the 50ml bottle. He charged 75 rupees for 50ml bottle and i paid it and came home. Then inoted that i lost my 25 rupees to the manufacturer. How i explain here, 20ml same clean and clear bottle costs 20 rupees Same clean and clear 50ml costs 75 rupees I don't know what logic heremakes 25 rupees difference in price. Logically 20ml costs 20 rupees means 50ml should cost 50 rupees na, okayincluding charges and bottle they shall sell it for 55 - 60 rupees. For 75 rupees i can buy three 20ml bottles which makes, 3X20ml = 60 ml and cost me 60rupees. I lost both money and 25ml offace wash too But how the same product from same manufacturer have this much pricedifference irrespective of quantity So my dear readers don't do same fault like i did. Not only this product, any product you want to purchase just have a checkon price differences between quantities and buy. This will really make you asmart consume. Wake up consumers, wake up!!!!! My note- Generally smaller sizepacks are less priced of most commodities. Probably to help the poor Q11 Why are you interestedin physics? A11 Six answers Edward Measure , Ph.D. Physics, Arizona State University (1977)Answered 1hago Because I have always wanted to know how the world works, and physics hassome of the deepest questions and answers. 2ND ANSWER BarnabyLane , Kept a life long interest in physics Answered 1h ago I’ve always been fascinated with physics. Both physics and maths, really. Why? I think the initial reason was that, way back when studying it atschool, I could do it and was good at it. I could always solve physics problemsand doing so gave me a huge sense of achievement and pleasure. I stopped physics after A level and didn’t pursue it at university. Butthat did nothing to dent my enthusiasm for it. I still do physics problems inmy head. I read about physics, and watch lectures and talks about physicsissues, for pleasure. There’s something deeply satisfying about getting under the guts of howthe world works. 3RD ANSWER- GaryWatmuff , former Retired Answered 51m ago All the aspects of physics are awe inspiring. When you think you crackeda question with a feasible answer, your answer throws up even more questions. If there is anything that is eternal, it’s Physics in its entirety. 4THANSWER- Jeffrey Werbock , musician, lecturer Answered55m ago😉 Human beings have brains which generate minds which are based on the needto establish a cause for every effect observed. The first application for ourcausality based thinking minds is survival, of course, and then when we feelsecure enough and comfortable enough, we become curious regarding everything weobserve, not just the causes for conditions which may be relevant to survivaland comfort. It is most natural, the same curiosity which impels many animalspecies to paw at things, just out of curiosity. Some people have so muchcuriosity about the world and how it really operates that science was born inresponse to that need. Also, some people, not everyone, have a deep skepticismabout stories that attempt to explain how the world works which are unsupportedby any evidence. Curiosity plus skepticism equals science. Physics is the mostgeneralized branch of science, attempting to understand the cause of everythingat all scales. How can you be alive and human and not be interested in physicsat some level? Forget the math, that’s for professionals who have to make aliving at predicting outcomes; just become familiar with the basic principles,of special relativity, general relativity, and quantum field theory, and mostlikely you will feel the same feeling of gratifying your desire to satisfy yourcuriosity how the worldworks that motivates physicists in general, and us non-physicists who arecurious about reality but not interested in stories made up before physicsbecame the science it now is. 5TH ANSWER - GopalaKrishnan, former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered 5m ago I studied in India, Kerala . My home is Pandalam. My home college offeredBSc. Physics and Mathematics and Chemistry and Physics graduate courses. I hadmore marks in Chemistry, but still I applied for Physics as main subject. I gotadmission a little later. Why I desired Physics overchemistry can be God’s decision. I got selected as Junior engineer in Telecom since I took Physics asmajor with Mathematics as minor and scored very high on completion of mycourse. I got Telecom engineering training with other engineering graduates inthe training centre at Trivandrum in 1966. >From joining BSc. Physics automatically I started more liking to physics. 6TH ANSWER- AlanMcdougall, Retired Industrial Engineer IT Manager at ESKOM SOUTH AFRICA (1966-present) Answered 1h ago Because physics leads to a better understanding of the Real Physicalworld.
