 5. Monkey story of weighing

Anincident happened years ago. One day in a home big appam (mould sweet) was
preparingfor a festive occasion. Two crows reached the home yard smelling
appam.

Thecook felt to give one big appam to crows and thrown one just outside. The
twocrows dragged it more and desired to divide equally and eat leisurely.
Either crow could not take the full appam inits beak due to its size and
weight.

Thecrows saw one Monkey a little away. They requested the monkey to help in
equallydividing the appam in to two.

Themonkey came consenting to divide the appam. It felt the smell of appam
andconcluded that it would be tasty and desired a share while weighing and
equallydividing.

Themonkey tore the appam in to two and put in each hand and weighed with mind.
Onepart in right hand was slightly weighing more and it ate its side and placed
inarm. Now the part in left hand felt weighing more. It ate its side also.

Theprocess repeated a 2nd time. The crows noted the monkey was eatingthe appam
and they were losing that much appam. The crows were also veryintelligent.

Theelder crow told younger- See, even before our tasting monkey is eating
andquantity is getting reduced. The younger nodded. They told the monkey-
Equally weighingis not a problem between us. We are brothers. They snatched the
bits from themonkey’s hands and flew away.

Nowadayscrows are more interested in salty things. The above monkey story I
read inPanchathanthra kathakal.
Moral(Guna patam)- Unity is strength. If there is a difference betweentwo men
and a third man is approached he would make use of the situation to hisbenefit,
making loose both.
 6. Story of king Sibi.

Inan afternoon king Sibi was relaxing after meals near an open window for
breeze.Suddenly a parrot with wounds flew and fell on the lap of king Sibi. He
tookit, cleaned the bleeding wound and applied medicines. On getting conscious
theparrot requested the king to save him. It was shot by a hunter with his
arrowand with pain it flew and fell on the lap of the king.

Withinminutes, the hunter reached the king and said he was hungry and he shot
theparrot for his food on the day and it was his right to have it.

Theking said it was his duty as king to save the parrot came to him with
wounds. He could not give the parrot. But the king said if he wanted meat being
hungry,he can get that much meat from his thigh by weight equal to parrot.

Theincident was actually a test by God to check the magnanimity of the king
Sibi.

KingSibi story I studied in primary class.

7. Equal weight cannot agree between allcommodities

Inthe beginning   commodities wereexchanged between people, one for the other
as REQUIRED. There were nobargains. Each got what they required. But this
method called Panda mattam couldnot be continued much.

Threepersons having three different things, But their requirement was
different fromwhat they all had.  So a tender systemgot established. The tender
was some authority. Different people gave to some authority which collected
things andissued tender.  Using the tender he couldget what he required from
the others. This was also as REQUIRED. No measure byweight or volume.

Onthose days no body felt the necessity of STORING FOR FUTURE. If something
was available, available to everybody who desired it, if not available, not
available toall.  What an excellent atmosphere ofliving.

Timepassed by hundreds of years. Population increased. When scarcity came for
acommodity the quantity for a tender had to be limited. For a tender it
wasweighed and given. The initial weighing might be using hands taking things
inhands with mental weighing.

Jackfruit (Chakka) could be weighed with mango. Rice could be weighed
withwheat.  Pepper (Kurumulagu) and Crdamom (elakka)could be weighed for equal
weight. But can we weigh equally between cardamomand mango?

Theeffort for producing of ealakka is much more comparing to plucking and
bringinga few mangoes. So the importance of tender system.

8. Harappan mohenjedaro Indus Valleyperiod.

Ihave read from Wikipedia polished stones of same size but different weight
werefound on excavation. The weight of marble stones was lesser than granite
and likethat.. This would have been used for earlier weighing before using
metallicweights.

I recollectin my boyhood days small granite weights  were used instead
ofmetallic weights in many shops .

9. Weighing measuring and counting

Theseare all different methods of accounting. Coconuts are counted. Betel nuts
areweighed or counted. Rice is either measured or weighed.

Plantainsare counted by number or weighed now- adays. In my boyhood days liquid
itemswere measured. Now many are weighed like edible oils.

Ihave not seen milk weighed. It is told in measure. Similarly petroleum
itemslike petrol or diesel or oils.   ButCOOKING GAS IS WEIGHED.

Manyitems earlier measured are now weighed. Examples are rice, pulses,
commoditiesetc.

10. Difference between volume and weight.

Onelitre of water weighs one kg. But one litre of oil weighs only 850-900
gramsand not one kg, since they are lesser than water in weight. Lesser
density- Binding is lesser  between molecules.

Onelitre of kerosene weighs only about 750 or 800 grams, still lesser weight
thanedible oils. This is the reason why same volume of silver and gold weigh
verymuch difference. Silver has lesser density, Binding  is lesser  between
molecules.

 11. Spring balance and arm balance

Thespring balance is handy. Here a needle attached to a spring move over a
premarked scale. When spring is more tensioned or pulled by weight, the
needlemoves down.

Ihave read from Wikipedia post offices were using this spring balance since
easyfor weighing. But in India I had seen only balance with arms earlier.
Recentpast electronic machines are installed to weigh postal articles for
chargingdepend on weight alone within India , and distance also outside India.

12. Weighing in reserve bank

Whilereserve bank issue coins, I am told, they are not COUNTED but weighed.
Certainweight and type of coins make certain value. They have a ready chart,
for theweight of coins and its value.

I will continue in next posting.
