Brahma theLord of all Prajapaties, the Devas, Rishis, Pitris, Manus, Daksha, Bhrigu,Angiras, Sanaka and his group and Sri Parameswara, to the eclat of all, crownedVamana, as the Overlord of all the realms and the guardian deities of thedifferent quarters, as he had the power to protect and espouse the cause ofspirituality and institutions like the Vedas, Dharma, austerities and and alsoconfer liberation. Along the path of the Devas (Devayana), Indra now enteredSvarga -нheaven- preceded by the august Vamana, blessed by Brahma andaccompanied by the guardian deities of the region.аа Indra attained toimmeasurable prosperity and was free of threat.аа Brahma and the otherdivinities returned to their realms in their respective chariots, singing theglory of the Lord and expressing their regard for Aditi, the mother of Vamana. This episode erases the sin of the listeners.аа The glory ofthe Lord is inexhaustible like counting the particles of the earth.аа There isnone who has sounded the depth of God's glory.аа None will be there in futuretoo.а The recitation of this account in the rites of Devas or Pitris will freeflaws. 383 MATSYA AVATARAM Sukabrahmam began thenarration of Matsyavatara, as requested by king Parikshit thus: The Lord incarnates in human form for the protection of cows,Brahmanas, Devas, and the virtuous as well as the Vedas, Dharma and Artha.ааThough God pervades all, He is not affected by the qualiнties of the objects Hepervades, being non-material.аа Towards the close of the previous Kalpa therewas a Naimittika-pralaya (periodiнcal deluge) caused by Brahma's sleep,flooding all the three worlds . As Brahma was lyingdown asleep, the mighty Asura by name Hayagriva, usurped the Vedas from him.Looking at the situation, the Lord manifested as a fish. A Rajarshi by name Satyavrata was just then doing penance,sustaining himself only on water.аа It was this Satyavrata, who was born as theson of Vivaswan (Sun-god) and was made a Manu in this Kalpa with the popularname of Sraddha Deva /Vaivaswata.аа As he was performing rites with water(Jalatarpana) in the river Kiritamaala he found a strange fish in the waterheld in his cupped palms.аа He immediately dropped the fish along with thewater in the river.аа The fish piteously pleaded, O Compassionate to theweak!ааа Why are you exposing me to these aquatic creatures, who subsist ontheir own kind?аа Please save me. Touched by its cry, the king put it in his Kamandulu water,and returned to his Ashrama/hermitage.аа Overnight the fish grew beyond thedimension of the Kamandulu and told the king, I don't wish to squeeze myselfinto this Kamandulu. Please provide me a larger area where I can livecomfortably.аа Have I not taken refuge in you??аа The king shifted it to abigger water-vessel, which also it soon outgrew, then to a pond, then to a lakeand finally into the sea.аа The fish pleaded against exposure to the powerfulaquatic creatures like whales. Charmed by the sweet words of the fish, Rajarishi Satyavratasought to know its real identity and said, This phenomenon of growth has noprecedence. You are really the eternal Sriman Narayana, in the guise of a Fish,manifested as such for the wellbeing of the universe.аа So, my salutations toyou, O Glorious Purusha!аа O Lord of creation, preservation and dissolution!ааYou are the soul and goal of us who have taken refuge in you. All yourincarnations are meant for the wellbeing of humanity. So, for serving whatcause, has this Fish-form been assumed by you? O Lotus-eyed!аа By revealingthis form to me, it is clear that worship of you will never go in vain. 384 THE LORD'S REVELATION The ever-loving Lordreplied, O King!аа On the seventh day from today all the three worlds will besubmerged in deluge (water). A boat by my ordainment will thenapproach you.аа Taking with you all the herbs and seeds and surrounded by the'Saptharishis (seven sages), you will board the vessel, with the radiance ofthe Saptarshis dispelling the darkness.аа When the boat is tossed by the stormysea, you secure it by tying it to my horn (antenna) using the serpent Vasukifor the cord.аа I shall secure you thus for the duration of Brahmas night andthe conclusion of the deluge.аа You shall then attain to enlightenment both inregard to your doubts as well as glory.аа Thus saying, the Lord disappeared. The Rajarshi Satyavrata, seating himself on Kusa grass spreadwith the pointed ends facing east and him facing north-east, meditated on theMatsya-form of the Lord.аа The deluge occurred.аа Satyaнvrata, taking with himthe herbs and seeds and surrounded by the Saptaнrishis, boarded the approachingboat.ааа He then meditated on the Lord, who appeared as a prodigious fish of alakh of Yojanas (8 Lakhs miles) in size and tied to its horn the boat with theVasuki serpent.аа He began to praise the God: Men, whose wisdom is obliteratedby ignorance without a beginning and who are thus caught in the whirl-pool ofSamsara, by your grace surrender themselves to you and thereby attain toThee.аа Devoid of knowledge and bound by Karma, they involve themselves inKarma, which leads to more suffering.аа Just as the fire frees the silver ofimpurities, the worship of you removes the blemish from mind, thereнbyattaining the knowledge of self. I take refuge in Thee, whose infinitesimalgrace cannot be matched by the aggregate of the favours conferred by all thedeities, teachers and others.аа Just as luminosity is natural to Sun, you areself-luminous and bestower of enlightenment and self-consciousness.аа Thewisdom imparted by you is eternal.аа Thou art the beloved of all the worlds,well wisher, dear Lord and granter of prayers.а Yet, the blind do not know youare indwelling in all.аа I take refuge in Thee, the Supreme Lord, for attainingto the knowledge of the Atman (self).аа Sunder the knot of ignorance, wherebybody is identified with the soul.аа Reveal to me Thy true form. The Lord in Matsya-form revealed to Rajarshi Satyavrata thesubtle truth of the Atman in the shape of Matsyapurana, dispelling allignorance.аа When the Pralaya - deluge ended, the Lord restored to Brahma, whohad woken up, the Vedas retrieved from Hayagriva. It is this Satyavrata,endowed with knowledge and experience of truth, who has become Vaivasvata Manuin this Svetavaraka Kalpamdue to Mahavishnu's grace.аа Those listening to this holy narrative will befreed of sins.аа A devotee, who daily worships the Lord with the recital, willhave all his desires fulfilled and will attain to the Supreme.а My salutationsto the Lord, who retrieved the Vedas, which were usurped by the Asura,Hayagriva, when Brahma had become weak and restored them back to him, whoenlightened Satyavrata and others on Brahman the eternal, the origin of all and who hadthe disguise of Matsya (Fish).
