CHIRAVA 2(COCONUT SCRAPER) Continued from part1 Dearfriends, Thisis part 2 of my posting on chirava. Some more information are told in thispart. MrAPS Mani has responded that in Palghat area Variar is not entrusted the work ofgrating coconut in feasts of Nampoothiries and Brahmins. Only Brahmins do thegrating. Sincerely, GopalaKrishnan 10-10-2021 10. Chirava made of iron body Byabout 1960’s chirava appeared in hard ware shops. The body was made of iron andpainted and four legs were provided. The size and weight had drastically reduced. This was mainly intended for domestic use. This type became widely used in homes. The rough body gave the grip for sitting especially for women with slipperycloths. This also made with slanting away from the tongue of grater. 11 Arumamana with chirava. Even today the arumamana is not afamiliar item in southern and central Kerala. I am not sure about Palghat area. Howeverin Tamilnadu, arumamana with chirava appeared. It had the convenience of botharumamana for cutting vegetables to pieces (kashanams) for dishes and chiravafor scraping. It occupied lesser space one kitchen tool. The body had becomevery slimmer. Probably it was arumamana, just added with chirava. I am notfamiliar to use arumamana where as my wife find it better than knife. 12. Mechanical Coconut scrapper withhandle Itis still in use in many homes. It has a vacuum arrangement for firmly fittingto granite or marble surfaces at its bottom with tough rubber fitting. Just placing with pressure it holdsto the surface using vacuum property at the bottom. It has two tongues; one placed 90 degrees tothe other. Hence four grating areas. Rotatingof the handle with one hand and holding coconut firmly with the other hand, coconutgets shredded. Coconut graters areavailable with rotating handle and body physically fixing to the edge of also. These appeared about 10 years ago. But coconut has to be held with pressure. 13. Chiravayutae nakku Thetongue of chirava is saw toothed and sharp. Some people always talk hardly. They do not know to talk softly. Always firm and serious in talk even forordinary talking. They may mostly good at heart. Somepurposely talk hard. It is told-vettonnu. Muri randu (One cut- divided in to two parts). Such people are alwaysreferred to have tongue of chirava. 14. Old ype Chirava in the market InKerala still the chirava with wooden body is available in markets. I have seenit in Trivandrum chalai market. During festivals in certain places, chirava is soldmade of wood which is more comfortable for major works. 15. Chirava is not a defending weapon. Becauseof the heavy weight of the body and no handle, old type chirava cannot be holdupside down. Balance would be lost and chirava would fall on his own leg. 16. New type of electric grater Nowmajor hardware/ metal shops have grater working on electric power inTamilnaadu. It is firmly fixed to platformsurface by a rotary switch atany location. Power is switchedusing another switch. Grater would be rotating. Placing a plate/leaf below thegrater and simply holding the halved coconut, the meat would be shredded. Onlything halved coconut has to be held with hand now. The rotation of the scraper is slow. Onecan sit in a chair and hold the halved coconut for shredding. It costs above Rs2000-00. I have one at home purchased two years back. Without any problem itworks till date. 16. Prathaman and chutni Thecoconut meat shredding and grinding are hard works. Even abit of coconut shell after shredding has to be carefully removed. Butwhile taking the pure chutni with taste and prathaman with coconut milk, weforget all these things. Now coconut milk is available in packs. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
