VAZHAPAZHAM(FULLY RIPE PLANTAIN)

1Explanation

A banana is an elongated, edible fruit – botanically a berry– produced by
several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa.

In some countries, bananas used for cooking may be called"plantains",
distinguishing them from dessert bananas.

The fruit is variable in size, colour, and firmness, but isusually elongated
and curved, with soft flesh rich in starch covered with arind, which may be
green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe.

The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of theplant. Almost all modern
edible seedless (parthenocarp) bananas come from twowild species – Musa
acuminata and Musa balbisiana. The scientific names of mostcultivated bananas
are Musa acuminata, Musa balbisiana, and Musa × paradisiacafor the hybrid Musa
acuminata × M. balbisiana, depending on their genomicconstitution. The old
scientific name for this hybrid, Musa sapientum, is nolonger used.

2. Different types ofplantains generally available in Tamilnadu.

Currently all types of plantain fruits are priced about 80-00rupees per kg.
Slightly less priced poovan (Palayam thodan of Kerala) is notfound now in
Chennai shops nowadays. To say the fruit priced lowest is plantain.

Rasthai (Kerala poovan), red plantain, Karpoora smell plantain,Elachi (small
rasthali) and banana are available. What wondered me today was banana was less
priced (Rs60-00) than others  which astonished me.This prompted me to write
this posting.

The plantain used raw is Monthan and is mostly available duringamavasi period.
Malavazhai ripe plantain and robusto are available at times

3. Plantain products inChennai

In the last two decades banana is freely available either asraw or as ripen,
and chips( prepared daily  in some shops). That much demand for Banana
chips.Monthan is also available either salted oradded with chilly/pepper.

Packed products are available either prepared in Cochin or Trichy.

4.Ripe banana chips

In the last six months we could get also ripen banana  fried prepared from
Ernakulam/Cochin. Recentlywe get the ones prepared by a company in Trichy.

5. Sarkara puratti.

I could rarely taste sarkara puratti in feasts, probably prepared by some
Kerala cooks orobtained from Kerala

>From the last Onam period, sarkara puratti prepared from Cochin started
>appearing insupermarkets. Today I could obtain sarkarapuratti prepared from
>aTrichy manufacturer.

6. Vertically sliced ripenbanana

So far I could get more sweet sliced horizontal chips preparedat Cochin and
packed from super markets. At the earliest, I may get  packets prepared from
Trichy also in supermarkets. Now we get horizontal sliced round ripen banana
chips.

7 Super markets stocks

Many supermarkets stock things which are more  in demand. Before 3 years papad
was rare. Nowmany  shops keep papad because of therequirement. Not only
Keralites, Thalyalees, and Tamil people and people fromother states also like
to  have Kerala specialpreparations.
