Q1           How comedistilled water hasn't replaced transformer oil as a high
voltage insulator?

A1           Jim Phipps Power Systems Engineer Updated May 15, 2020

Yes. Pure distilledwater is an excellent insulator with high dielectric
strength that is greater than mineral oil, it isless expensive than oil and
conducts heat better. However, the following threeimportant points will favor
the use of mineral oil over that of water.

Moisture—All largehigh-voltage powertransformers which are liquid filled use a
very high quality kraft paper(cellulose fibers) to insulate the windings. Any
moisture in the oil willtransfer to the paper and can cause the dielectric
strength of the fibers todegrade and breakdown in addition to producing corona
when in the presence ofgas bubbles and high strength electric fields. You can
think of the mineral oilenvironment in a liquid filled transformer as being
very dry. Ideally, themineral oil is completely devoid of moisture. Since the
paper insulation willtend to soak up moisture in the oil (it is more
hygroscopic than mineral oil),a dry transformer will tend to have an insulation
power factor of less than0.5% and the closer this value is to zero gives an
indication of the dryness ofthe insulation system. It is very, very, dry like a
hot sandy desert. Tomaintain a dry environment in the oil, the transformer tank
is sealed so thatmoist air does not leak in and expose the oil. If the tank
does leak, the oilwill absorb the moisture out of the air like a dry paper
towel soaks up water.Over time, the moisture in the oil will migrate to the
paper winding insulationwhere it will soak in and start a reaction process that
breaks down thecellulose fibers in the paper. Ultimately, this will lead to the
failure of theinsulation resulting in an internal fault. High moisture content
in oil canalso lead to bubble formation due to the low vapor pressure of water.
Asbubbles form, the dielectric strength is reduced and corona discharge
canaccelerate the breakdown of the insulation.

TemperatureRange—Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. Large power
transformers in cold regions mustoperate at temperatures below freezing and may
experience temperature rises atthe winding hot spot that approach boiling.
Obviously, if a transformer wasfilled with water and froze, ice expansion would
cause damage to the tank andwinding insulation in addition to other components
like electrical connections. At the other extreme, if the water started to boil,
steam bubbles would beproduced and this would cause increased tank pressure,
reduce heat conduction, but more importantly, it would result in a lower
dielectric strength in thespace near the winding where the steam bubbles form.
This would increase coronaand cause damage to the winding insulation and
ultimately to failure.

Corrosion—Powertransformers are constructed with steel tanks and iron cores in
addition to other ironcomponents used in the design. Water will corrode iron
even when the water starts out as very pure.Over time, impurities will form as
the water reacts with other materials and asthese impurities increase in
concentration, corrosion will result in additionto a reduction in dielectric
strength. For large power transformers like those used in largehigh-voltage
power grids, they are designed to have lifetimes exceeding 40years. The use of
water would lead to corrosion and could drastically shortenthe life expectancy.

Q2           Is it agood decision to buy an EV in India right now?

A2           Prasanna Bhalerao Please do not share my answers onmonetised
spaces.20h ago

EVs are good. EVs are clean and non polluting. EVs are quiet,so no noise
pollution. EVs are the future of the world. Getting an EV is theright idea.

There is a hiccup right now in India however. The (minor)hiccup is that there
are not enough charging points across. This willdefinitely improve of course as
time goes by. Then again, if the ride is fromhome to office to back, going to
the the mall, etc., that doesn't matter much, does it? But, for goinglong
distance, there may be a problem.

Q3           Why are80% of people selected in the SSC CGL job (GP4600) not
happy with salary andposting?

A3           P MGowindan Nampoothiri Former GM at Reserve Bank of India
(RBI)(2001–2008)October 4

I do not know the basis of 80 %

>From the net, I have checked the rate of resignation from SSCGL is too low.
>People do not resign and go for other jobs. If the satisfactionrate is low the
>quitting rate must be high. So the 80 % figure is TOTALLYwrong.

Secondly, all people will not be happy in any job. There willbe some people
unsatisfied always, that is because they had higher expectationsfrom SSC GL.

SSC GL is not a Top-level post and the salary cannot be toohigh. All can not
get choice posting also. Most of the people who joined SSC GLare happy with
their jobs.

Q4           How do youkeep your office fresh?

A4           Initial Hygiene India100 years of experience withcustomized
business solutions Updated September 20

Some steps following which you can keep your office fresh:

Allow fresh air toenter your workspace:    What do you think is the best way to
get rid ofa musty odor in the office? Most businesses have air conditioning
units running24 hours a day without ever opening a window. It is acceptable for
keeping theair within moving, but it also means that the scents stay the same.
Allow freshair to enter your workspace by opening the office windows for at
least 15minutes (even if it's before the day starts).

Organize yourworkstation:    First and foremost, makesure that all
workplacesare clean! A messy office might begin to smell, as unwashed plates
from lunch, heaps of paper, and trash can all contribute to a foul smell. It's
the mainfactor for a hostile work environment, ensuring everyone knows the
significanceof keeping their workstation clean.

Use the restroom withcaution:    Everyone in the office must contribute to
keeping it freshand clean each day. It entails replacing the cleaning products
regularly, ensuring that the soap is always available, and overall avoiding
making a messat any time and for any cause! The bathroom should have an air
vent, but ifthere are any openings, be sure to open those for several minutes
or at leastonce a day.

Encourage Regular Handhygiene:    It is essential to promote good hand hygiene
habits, especially in the office where cross-contamination is rampant. This can
be doneby having adequate hand hygiene solutions to encourage regular
handwashing withsoap, drying, and sanitising within your business. Also, the
offices shouldinstall pleasant fragrance Hand Sanitiser units across the office
and make themeasily accessible.

Equip Feminine hygieneunits:    Washrooms at most offices are not well equipped
withsanitary bins, providing discomfort to an unpleasant situation for the
femaleworker. Providing your female staff or customers with a discreet and
hygienicplace with portable toilet suppliers and sanitary bins to dispose of
femininehygiene waste is crucial to maintaining a clean and pleasant washroom
environmentand should be a high priority in any work.

Flowers should beadded:    Flowers at the office are an excellent idea because
you offer apleasant aroma and make the environment more comfortable for
personnel andvisitors. Inside palm trees are considered fantastic air purifiers
if you wantto invest in plants that will live longer than flowers.

Good hygiene is vital in creating a productive environmentthat employees want
to work in. With washrooms and equipment being used severaltimes a day by each
employee, and more intensely at certain peak times, it is achallenge not to let
hygiene standards slip.

This is critical as it will show your employees you careabout their wellbeing,
help reduce the transmission of illnesses and supportbetter business
performance.

Q6           How do Idesign a backyard landscape plan?

A6           Matt Daly, Landscape Designer (2017-present) Answered 12m ago

If you are going to tackle this without hiring a professionalto add you in the
design process, here are a few tips I think would greatlyhelp you in your quest.

Make a list of the features that you want to see in thespace. Patio, dog area,
kids area, deck, patio cover, pool, fireplace etc.

Next, measure your backyard. You probably have three fencelines and then your
house so measure every face and write them down on a pieceof paper so you are
able to have a canvas to design within.

you should start from your back door and work your way outkeeping in mind that
the further some thing is from the back door the less youwere likely to use it.
Typically outdoor living space is only going to be a fewfeet from the back
door. Once you have come up with the shape and size of thepatio, then start
thinking how you can fill that patio with the features thatwould typically live
there. Once you are content with that, then you can startworking on the
border/perimeter of the space and then filling in what isbetween the perimeter
and the patio.

keep in mind that you were likely going to spend more timelooking at this from
inside then you are going to actually be using it. It’skey that you figure out
what vantage points of your new design you will beseeing from windows that you
regularly pass in the home. If you can make youroutdoor space attractive from
both inside as well as when you are outside usingit, it’s a win/win.

if there are any aspects of the space that you are notconfident in designing
yourself, you can always bring in a specialty designerthat can only focus on
planting or only focus on patio or potentially help youthat your idea to think
of opportunities and threats.

additionally, many contractors out there that physicallybuild the spaces are
happy to take your ideas and help you improve on them. This can be a very
worthwhile experience if you find somebody that you cantrust.

Q7           Theexistence of which tree is a mystery to science because of its
strangecharacteristics?

A7           Lucia Baratto Attended a garden design course October 6

The Kalaloch Tree.

Some people call it the Tree of Life. With its amazinglyviewable roots
seemingly supplying the tree with life despite having no soil,it seems to be
immortal. The Kalaloch Tree is a Sitka spruce, the largest typeof spruce. The
Sitka spruce runs along the west coast. It’s noted for both itstowering height
and its wide trunk, two characteristics that contribute to thistree’s mystery.
Underneath the webbed roots of the Kalaloch Tree is the TreeRoot Cave. Inside,
a stream falls into the cave and flows out into the ocean. It’s this stream that
washes out the soil underneath the roots every year. Manyquestion how the tree
continues to grow and the leaves continue to stay green. Witnessesof the tree
continue to return every year to gape at its wonder, expecting itto have fallen
during the time between their visits. And each year, toeveryone’s surprise, the
tree remains in its questionable position .Sitkaspruce trees are a long lived
species with individuals over 700 years oldknown. Olympia National Park,
Washington, United States.

Q8           What was atypical meal for a European peasant during winter in the
Middle Ages?

A8           Ken Ward B.A B.ED ARCT OCT from Brock University, Canada
(Graduated1973)Updated October 6

Peasants in medieval England ate a diet consisting mainly ofa type of stew
called pottage made from the peas, beans and onions that theycultivated in
their gardens. Foods usually found in a villager's diet wouldalso include
colewort (Kale) and herbs (Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme). Forprotein,
cheese and eggs and very occasionally meat were eaten. Blood sausageor black
pudding, made from pig blood, were poor people's food together withsalted
bacon. The peasants' staple food was a dark bread made out of rye grainor more
commonly, oats. The only sweet food they feasted on were the berries, nuts and
honey that they collected from the woods. Besides butchery, whichpeasants
performed for the wealthier classes, winter was synonymous with farmwork for
medieval peasants. The water from a river was usually dangerous todrink and the
milk did not stay fresh for long so the peasants consumed smallale which, when
brewed, was a safe option. In larger homes of which there werenot many, an
underground cellar could be used to keep foods packed in winterice through the
cooler spring months and into the summer. Some villages hadcommunal ice mounds
which would allow perishable items to have prolonged shelflife. All in all
poorer folk, then as now, did not fare well.

Q9           Why dodoctors have items handed to them during surgery? Wouldn't
it be faster to pickup the items themselves?

A9           Elaine Green Photographer, OperatingRoom Nurse, Pianist,Music
TeacherSeptember 15

No it wouldn’t be faster, not at all. As well, the surgeondoes not usually take
their eyes off the operative site, especially if the areais hard to visualize.
There are many instruments that look similar to eachother.

This pan below is just the most basic set of instruments ingeneral surgery,
this doesn’t even include any of the orthopedics tools, screws, devices, and we
haven’t even touched on plastic reconstruction surgery, gynecology, urology, etc
or any other specialized areas of surgery. There arehundreds of other pans,
sets, instruments, and quite a few have to be assembledbefore giving the
instrument to the surgeon.

Q12         What aresome simple things that turn out to be a safety hazard?

Sleeping while you're in the car can prove to be verydangerous. Especially if
the car is idle.

I'm reporting from LINE, sleeping in a stopped car with theAC on and the
windows turned off is dangerous!

This risk will be greater if the car's air conditioner is ina leaky condition.
In fact, it only takes 10 minutes to suffocate you fromcarbon monoxide (CO)
poisoning.

And when we sleep, because we don't realize that we need moreoxygen, that's why
we get stuck in that situation and end up suffocating.

It's better if you're really tired and need to sleep, rent acheap motel instead
of sleeping pulled over in the car. It's scary to diesilly.

Not Clicking the helmet.I was very, very grateful that time Ihad the chance to
click on my helmet before leaving because 5 minutes before mydestination I had
an accident. Get hit from the side, then slide on theasphalt. As a result, my
back, stomach, arms, thighs, knees, and feet were allscratched by asphalt and
sand.

For those who don't know what it's like, deep scratches thatare ingested with
sand must be double cleaned because the sand enters theinjured skin, if not
cleaned it will cause infection and healing will take longer.

What I noticed from the accident was that my helmet was alsoscratched inside,
especially on the windshield. I can't imagine if the helmetcomes off then my
head and face will become crumbly.
