Q1What is the speciality of Suryanar koil temple in South India?

A1 Suryanaar Koyil was built bythe Chola kings. Inscriptions from theperiod of 
Kulottunga Chola I(1075-1120) refer to this temple as the Kulottunga Chola 
Martanda Alayam.

Kulottunga Chola is said to have had a good relationship with theGahadwal 
dynasty of Kanauj (1090 -1194), whose rulers were Sun worshippers, and hence 
Suryanar Koyil, is considered to be anexpression of their influence in South 
India. 

It is to be noted that the firstof these, the Suryanaartemple is the only one 
that is dedicated to the graham or the celestial bodyitself

Q2Do Vedas mention sun worship? Do Puranas have mention of it?

A2 The sun god is referred to as Surya or Aditya. The Vedas are fullof hymns 
describing the celestial body as the source and sustainer of all lifeon earth. 
The origin of the worship of the Sun in India is thus severalcenturies old.

The Ramayana speaks of Sage Agastya initiating Rama into sun worship through 
the Aditya Hridaya Mantra

Q3Do any other country was having Sun worship? Where do we have old Sun temples?

A3 It is also said that Iran was once a center of Solar worship and that some 
of the Magha priests of Iran had beenbrought to India to officiate in 
ceremonies.  

Sun temples across the subcontinent absorb the flavor of the regionthat they 
belong to. DakshinaarkaTemple in the Gangetic Plains (considered to be a site 
for makingofferings to ancestors), SuryanaarKoyil in South India , Arasavilli 
and Konarkon the East Coast of India, Modherain Gujarat (Western India), 
SuryaPahar in North Eastern India and Unaoin Central India are some of the well 
known sun temples of India.  

It should be mentioned here thatremains of an ancient Sun temple are found at 
Martanda near Srinagar in Kashmir. It issaid to date back to the first century 
CE.Ruins of a sun temple which attracted thousands of visitors in the 
7thcentury CE are found in Multan inPakistan. 

Q4Do there are legends that Sun worship will cure leprosy?

A4Legend has it that Samba the son of Krishna was cured of leprosy by his 
worshipof the sun god.

It is still believed by many thatsun worship offered at several of the sun 
temples all over India,is a cure for leprosy and other skin ailments, blindness 
and infertility.

Q5What are the details of the main Sun temples in India?

A5 Perhaps the best known of thesun temples in India are the remains of the 
Konark temple on the east coast of India and theremains of the Modherasun 
temple in the western state of Gujarat.The Suryanarayana temple at Arasavalli 
inAndhra Pradesh is an ancient one built by the Kalinga rulers in the 
1stmillennium CE.The DakshinaarkaSun temple at Gaya is associated with the 
rites for making offerings toancestors.

The Sun Temple at Ranakpur: is a magnificient structure

in white soapstone. It is located in the vicinity of the grand Jain 
templecomplex in Ranakpur in Rajasthan.

Q6Everybody knows about the Navagraha temples in and around Tanjore. Do any 
suchNavagraha temples any where else in south India?

A6 Yes.  It isto be noted that there is another set of nine temples in 
Tirunelvelidistrict which are said to constitue the Navagraha cluster of 
temples in thatpart of the state.

My note- More importance is for the temples around Tanjore.

Q7What is the speciality of Kanjanoor temple ?

A7 Kanjanoor- Bhramma is said tohave been blessed with a vision of Shiva’s 
marriage with Parvati here. Agni issaid to have worshipped Shiva here, hence 
the name Agneeswarar.

Q8What is the speciality of Vaitheeswaran kovil ?

A8 Pullirukkuvelur(Vaideeswaran Kovil) Shivais considered to be the Divine 
Healer Vaidyanathar  Hisconsort Thaiyalnaayaki is said to accompany him with a 
vessel containingmedicinal oil. There is also a shrine dedicated to Dhanwantari 
here. 

The prasadam offered at this temple goes by the name Tiruchaandu Urundaiand it 
is considered to be a panacea capable of curing many ailments. It ismade of 
ashes taken out of the homa kundam in front of the Subramanya shrine 

It is also believed that Ramaperformed the last rites to Jatayu here

Q9 Why a married person should wear yagyopaveeta of six threads?

A9 When a bachelor marries, his canvas of duties getsmultiplied by three more 
duties viz, - the first thread to pertains  to wife. After marriage, it is 
enjoined uponthe husband to protect her honour, dignity, chastity arrange 
necessary objectsfor livelihood and protect her, the second thread pertains to 
one’s mother in law and hisduties towards her and the third thread reminds a 
married person in respect of his duties towards hisfather in law

Q10 Why Ganges water and Tulsi should be given to adying person?

A10 Both are considered to remove three  Doshas, as Tulsi contains mercury and 
gold and Gangeswater is a great bactericide.  

InFrance, filtered water is utilized under various names, to cure many 
diseasesof indoor patients. 

Tulsi andGanges water, when combined and served to a dying person, pave the way 
for hissalvation

. There is hardly (rather none) any superbeneficial medicine, which can match 
their efficacy. 

Q11Why and how should a sacred thread be changed?

A11 The reason behind the replacement ofYagyopaveeta being that it becomes 
sullied in the following conditions viz, ifit breaks, when there is birth or 
death in the family during menstrual period,by coming in contact with the dead 
body of an unpious person, due to Shavanikarma, during solar& lunar eclipse 
etc. 

The old one should be replaced after having a hair cut andtaking bath, as per 
laid rules. 

Q12 What is the evening prayer while lighting theNilavilakku?

A12EVENING PRAYER is as follows:-

Subham karoti kalyaanam 

Aarogyam Dhanasampadah; 

ShatrubhuddhiVinaashaaya 

Deepa jyotir namo’stu te .

  Iprostrate to that lamp- light which brings the brilliance ,   the 
auspiciousness, the health , the wealth andpossessions  for the destruction of 
(my)bad (enemy to good ) intellect.

Q13 Everybody knowsankaracharya was born at kaladi. Who were his parents?

A13 Sankara was born to the nambUdiri brAhmaNa couple,    Sivaguru and AryAmbA, 
in a little villagecalled kAlaDi in Kerala.

Q14What was the violation Sankaracharya did from the general guide lines 
ofsanyasins?

A14 To comfort his    anxious mother, he promised that he wouldreturn at the 
moment of    herdeath,  to conduct her funeral rites, notwithstandingthe fact 
that he would    be a    sannyAsI then. 


Sankara heard that his mother was dying, and decided to visit    her. 
Remembering his promise to her, he performed her funeralrites. 

 His    ritualistic relativeswould not permit him to do the rites himself,   as 
he    was a sannyAsI, butSankara overrode their objections, and built a pyre    
himself and cremated his mother in her ownbackyard

Q15Who were the mythological sages had their hermits in Sringeri earlier?

A15 In the   course of his    travels, Sankarastayed for a long time at the 
site of the old   ASrama of the    Rshis vibhAndaka and RshyaSRnga,in the place 
known as SRngagiri   (Sringeri). 


Q16Everybody knows that Sankaracharya ascended the Sarvanja peetam. 
Question-where is the Sarvanja peetam?

A16 Ascension of the sarvajnapITha: In the courseof his travels, Sankara    
reachedKashmir. Here was a temple dedicated to SAradA (sarasvatI), the    
goddess of learning, which housed the sarvajnapITha,the Throne of    
Omniscience.

 It was a tradition for philosophers to visitthe place and    engage in debate. 
Thevictorious one would be allowed to ascend the   sarvajnapITha. 

It is said that no philosopher from thesouthern    region had    ever ascended 
the pITha, till Sankara visitedKashmir and defeated    all the    others there. 
He then ascended thesarvajnapITha with the blessings of   Goddess SAradA. 


My note- There is a view Sarvanjapetam was at Kanchipuram. 

Q17Do Ramanujacharya too  ascended thesarvajnapITha ?

A17  A fewcenturies later, rAmAnuja,the teacher of viSishTAdvaita, would visit 
the same sarvajnapITha in search ofthe    baudhAyana vRtti. 


However, a variant tradition places the    sarvajnapITha in  the south Indian 
city of Kancipuram.) 


Q18 When did Sankaracharya attained samadhi?

A18 Sankara was reaching the age of 32 now. Heretired to the Himalayas and 
disappeared inside a cave near Kedarnath. This cave istraditionally pointed out 
as the site   of his    samAdhi.

 Other variant traditions placeSankara's last days at   Karavirpitham    or at 
Mahur inMaharashtra, Trichur in Kerala or Kancipuram in Tamil    Nadu.

Q19Do Godess saraswathi is worshipped as main deity?

A19 Like Brahma, she is not worshipped much intemples. However, every year   
Saraswathi Pooja (Navarathiri ) is celebrated by people all over India

 However, Saraswathi does have a temple in    Koothanur in Tanjavur district 
(TamilNadu).

Q20 What is the legend behind navarathri?
A20 In Southern India, especially inTamilNadu,    Dasara    is celebrated as 
Navarathiri. 

The fight between Durga and Mahishasuran is said to have lasted fornine    days 
and nights. 


The period of nine days and nights when     Goddess Durga    fought the Asura 
is celebrated asNavarathiri in Tamilnadu
