PAKALKINAAVIN SUNDARAMAMORU

PALAZHITHIRAYIL

 Dearfriends,

Thetopic of writing about Pakal kinavu (Day dream) was in my mind for a
prettylong time. I thought of writing about it today.

Sincerely,

GopalaKrishnan 04-11-2021

1. Dictionary meaning

Theoxford dictionary gives the meaning for day dream as “a series of
pleasantthoughts that distracts one’s attention from the present. So by
definition onlypleasant thoughts come to day dream. Not unpleasant thoughts.

Ourmind can expand pleasant thoughts. This capacity is with all from boyhood
todeath bed. Two conditions are required- a full stomach after eating desiring
itemsand a comfortable atmosphere. There are many day dreamers while travelling
inthe bus and forgetting the place for getting down. We could see a hidden
smilein their face reflecting day dream after getting down away from the place.

2. Durvasa incident with Sakunthala.

Thefirst thing coming to my memory is the incident of Sakunthala, immersed in
daydream with the thoughts of King Dushyantha after he started to palace
leaving theashram. The teen daughter of sage Munikanyaka had much to think of
the strangepleasing experiences with Dushyantha.

SageDurvasa coming that way, first addressed for sage Kanva standing in front
ofhermitage. Then he noticed Sakunthala and again asked her for Kanva. Finding
noResponse from her he cursed her that the person on whom she think, would
forgether.

HoweverDurvasa was not so bad without understanding a young woman’s feeling to
herhusband. He gave amendment to the curse stating that proving any evidence,
he wouldrecollect her.

3. Sage Narada and dreaming.

Everytime I think of sage Narada, a smile would appear on my face, which I am
not ableto explain. Two incidents with Narada.

Oneis his desire to marry Damayanthi. For Damayanthi swayamvara, Narada desired
toparticipate. He desired to have the face of Mahavishnu, a pleasing face
andrequested Mahavishnu to grace with Kapi face. Kapi has got two meaning
–OneMahavishnu and other Vanara.

Withoutmuch thinking, Narada asked for the face of Kapi. He could have asked
like you to Mahavishnu.Maha Vishnu simply  agreed  . Probably after getting
grace of Mahavishnu,Narada did not bother to look for his face in the mirror.
(I have seen pictureswhere Damayanthi standing looking her face in a mirror)

Mahavishnugraced him with theface of vanara. In the swayamvara hall everybody
smiled at Narada,he thought, it was appreciating his beauty. To cut short,
Damayanthi already indesire of Nala garlanded him.

Thesecond one which me day dream is the way how Narada, a bachelor could
finalise the living arrangementswith five Pandavas for Droupadi and how he
could have expressed itto Droupadi.

4. Dreaming with age.

Akid of 5-10 years may day dream about the new toy. A young man may dream of
theresultants of a good job received. After getting the job, he may dream of
alover. A middle aged man may dream of the house he is constructing and
anelderly person may dream of the pleasant life of his son or daughter
aftermarriage.

Surelya retired person may day dream of his past official life and sweet
memories inday dream. Probably he may not be able to express his dream to wife
or familymembers.

Regardingwomen they go to a dreaming state in all ages of pleasurable things.

Agood reader may go to day dreams as he read a novel. Some may go to day
dreamsfor minutes together or even an hour.

5. Parukkutti in Marthanda varma.

Oneof the earliest novels I read was Marthanda varma in my school life, and
stillI could recollect my pleasing thoughts to make out a figure of character
Parukkuttitold in it.

Duringschool life and college life we would have many pleasing thoughts which
arealways pleasing to recollect and they may frequently come to our thoughts
wheneverwe are happy. To tell in Malayalam- Poovittu nilkum nin jeevithathil
ennum EaeKalalayathin madhunadubhoothikal.-Lines of Sri Cherukunnam
Purushothaman, my Malayalam lecturer  and poet.

 5a. Story of Ambassador Car.

Longback  for purchasing ambassador cars onehad to book and wait. In a family
the husband had booked for a car oncompulsion of wife. One day he received
intimation, his booking hasmaterialised. In the evening he found on return from
work, the wife in daydream without answering his calling. He raised the voice,
and  the wife got alerted. He asked what was herday dream. She told what would
be thepleasantness by  travelling in the backseat of the car in front of her
friends. The husband bowed his head- I amworrying  how I  could  make out the
money to purchase the car. Henever expected his booking would materialise so
soon.

6. Thara balam, Chandra balamthathaiva….

Itwould  be a repetition if I write aboutThara incident in detail- Abducting
of Thara after the yagya by Moon god. Tharawas the wife of Jupiter. However
Jupiter had two more wives, but he was specialto get Thara back from Moon.
Finally after big war on command of Brahma, Tharawas returned to Jupiter. Thara
was conceived already from Moon. The child bornis Budha.

Iused to slightly twist the incident and talk, telling Thara was giving
morepower to Jupiter than others and hence his persistent demand to get her
back. The matter for day dream- what was so special with Thara for Moon to
abducther?

My note- Earlier once I wrote aboutTharabalam in a satirical manner. Onemember
could not digest as seen from his later responses. Only thing I can  tell is-
it is a writer’s mind. There shouldbe a mind to appreciate a writer…
Theday dream can be still more pleasant if thought with Ahalya episode
also.Assisting Indra, taking the form of crow and crawling by Moon.
 7. The title

Theduet lines from a Malayalam movie Pakal Kinavu released in 65’s acted by
Sarada and Sathyan.
