BULB

Dear friends,

This is a postingabout electric bulbs and it’s development through years in the
layman’slanguage.

Now also we keep   10watts electric bulbs in our homes to replace the low
wattage bulb provided insit out during night and for night lamps in rooms. If
the LED bulbs providedfailed to function for immediate replacement ordinary/
LED  bulbs are kept spare.

Sincerely,

Gopalakrishnan24-11-2021.

1. Introduction

Size of bulb remains3/4th spherical and remaining conical in the holder side.
While fitting two contacts provided in thebulb provide connection from the bulb
to the holder.  To switch on and switch off phase lead wire isextended through
a switch.

Initially shade wasprovided over the bulb, so that light might concentrate down
wards. Graduallyuse of shade became reduced. It has become obsolete now.

Bulbs had differentsizes. Higher wattage bulbs were bigger in size. Low wattage
bulbs weresmaller.  The bulbs were transparent, onecould see the filament,
breakage of filament meant we had to replace the bulb.

Though called Zerowatt bulb, it was 10 watts bulb used as night lamp. Night
lamp had no shade

2. Installationof bulb

The wiring wasextended to roof and to a ceiling holder at two or three places
in hall and oneor two places in other rooms. Flexible wire was connected to
ceiling holderopening cap and inserted through cap hole and was screwed. The
flexible wirefor about 0.75 meter was connected to a bulb holder and bulb was
connected tothe holder. Above the holder the shade was provided.

3. Commonuse of bulb.

Initially 25 wattsbulbs were provided in bath rooms, 65 watts in hall and
kitchen, and 45 wattsto other rooms. 100 watts produced more heat and light.
People feared aboutmore electricity consumption. During functions, in the hall
it was provided removing65 watts bulb.

4. Extendingelectric power to temporary kitchen for feasts.

On those days inthe switch box for temporary use power sockets were provided.
Flexible wire wasconnected to a plug, the other end a 100 watts bulb was
provided through holder, and connected by temporary bindings, it was extended to
temporary kitchen etc.  by electrician. Plug point was handled very carefully.
Why on those days aswitch control was not provided during wiring to socket
point  is a mystery to me. On those days we had only porcelainblack top tumbler
switches. Piano switches came very late. Teak wood/countryswitch box was only
there. To homes only single phase supply was given. Therewas limitation of
total bulbs. Wiring was open on batten, later changed toconduits, now through
conduits concealed through wall. No more tumblerswitches.

5. Mercurylamps

Replacinghelium, mercury filled bulbs  appeared. It gave more white light.
Heating of filament was less, so the light wascomfortable.

6. Replacementto higher wattage bulbs

Aftereyes got adjusted to 65 watts and higher watts 25 watts usage became low.
10watts bulb is still used for  nightlamps. Progress in the field  started.

7 Tube light

Withthe arrival of tube lights,  bulbs becamestand by. Tube lights may flicker
suddenly, or go OFF. In kitchen, hall, bedrooms  bulbs became stand by. Change
ofwiring, slanting holder, tube lights were fitted to walls. Bulbs were
fittedfrom slanting holder. Ceiling rose on RCC top became only for
connectingceiling fans.

8 CFL

Compactfluorescent light bulb (CFL) is a fluorescent light bulb that has
beencompressed into the size of a standard-issue incandescent light bulb.
CFLstarted appearing. Most of the bulbs were replaced with different wattage
CFL.

Bulbswere kept spare to replace not working CFL. CFL came with a warranty of
oneyear.

LED Bulbs

Dueto poisonous effect of CFL, in place LED bulbs started appearing similar to
oldbulbs in different sizes, with wattage of 10 watts, 15 watts etc. These
bulbscome with warranty of one year.

LEDbulb produces light by passing the electric current through a
semiconductingmaterial—the diode—which then emits photons (light) through the
principle ofelectroluminescence. Don't let that big word scare you! ... The
electricalresistance of the filament causes it to get so hot that it glows,
producinglight.

Nowwe use for  night lamps ordinary 10 watts bulbs in colour , most of the
other lightingd using   tube light,LED Bulbs are used in bathrooms, portico,
outside lights    etc.
