Q1         What is best waterpurifier for hard water more than 700 TDS?

3 Answers Kaamana Ahuja,Technology Analyst, CS Engineer, Home Lover, Avid
Reader.Answered Jun 20

Well, having purchased a water purifier for my home just a few hours agoafter
extensive research over the period of eight days, I would state that whenit
comes to buying a water purifier for use on water having TDS more than 700,one
of the most crucial factors to be kept in consideration is the prowess ofthe
disinfection technology utilized for purifying the water -

Water Disinfection Technologies

The process of Reverse Osmosis(RO) removes up to 97% of the impurities present
in water. Forthe remaining 3%, water purifiers come installed with additional
methods ofdisinfection. The mosteffective among them all is passing UV rays
through the water.

UV rays are natural disinfectants and purify the water further to thehighest
degree such that virtually all the impurities are removed and water issafe for
consumption. Thus, one should consider purchasing a water purifier that makes
useof at least (RO+UV) filtration technique. Configurations like (RO+UV+UF)/
(RO+UV+MF) are also present in some models and provide added purification. Also,
the presence of a TDS controller in the water purifier helps maintain theTotal
Dissolved Salts(TDS) value of water within the acceptable range of100–500.

In terms of water disinfection prowess, the various technologies areranked in
the following order - (RO+UV+UF) > Alkaline > (RO+UV+MF) >(RO+UV) >> (RO+MF) >
RO > UV.

Furthermore, the storage tank capacity one should purchase a waterpurifier with
as per one’s family size, too needs to be kept in considerationwhile making the
purchase -

Storage Tank Capacity

There is a thumb rule to follow - take into consideration the number ofmembers
in one’s family. Based on that, below is mentioned the capacity of thestorage
tank one should opt for in a water purifier that would accommodateone’s
requirements-

For a family consistingone-four members, a water purifier with the storage tank
capacity up to 7litres would best cater tothe water consumption and food
preparation requirements.

For five-eight members, a waterpurifier with the storage tank capacity up to 10
litres would be adequate to cater to the needs, considering apart from direct
consumption of water, most of the food would beprepared at home with water
taken from water purifier.

For a family with morethan eight members, it would be wise to decide on a water
purifier thatcomes installed with atleast 12 litres capacity water storage tank.

In addition to the insights shared above, factors such as the watercleansing
prowess of the semi-permeable(RO) membrane, the durability of the heatsink
installed in the water purifier, and the prowess of the booster pump inpushing
the water across the RO membrane, too play crucial roles in determiningthe
product one should opt for to cater to one’s requirement. I gained
detailedknowledge about them from the post - Vibhor Shergill’s answer to The

Now RO (Reverse Osmosis) filter based units are available and are quitesuitable
for that application.

Earlier, distillation was used. Then Ion Exchange based units came butwere
mostly used for large scale industrial applications, units suitable for
domesticuse being very few.

I will not recommend specific brand and model - that choice is to be made by
you keeping in view thebudget, other features desired, brand loyalty if any,
service availability etc.

Q2         How often should youreplace your water filter cartridge?

A2          Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answeredjust now

It depends on many factors. 1 Cleaning of overhead tank. 2. Mud from bore well
water and municipal water. If watertank and municipal sump is cleaned once a
quarter, mud is practically less, paper filters have to be replaced once a
quarter. Carbon filter once a year.Membrane/memory unit once in two years.
Paper cartridges if good, can be washedand used. Ensure TDS above 50 after RO.

Q3         What are some unusualveggies that taste very good when fried?

A3             Kane   Former 技术员Nov 17

Deep-fried cauliflower, manyfriends love to eat cauliflower in daily life.
Compared with tomatoes and other "watery" vegetables, cauliflower has a
relatively more minor water content and is a kind ofcauliflower that is more
suitable for deep-frying. The method is simple. Afterwashing the cauliflower,
drain the water, coat it with a layer of pre-seasonedbatter, and then fry in
the pan. The fried cauliflower tastes very good; Idon't know if you have eaten
it like this.

Q4         Why is there a waterlevel difference between Atlantic ocean and
Pacific ocean across the Panama Canal?

A4          Scott Hanson FormerElectronic Warfare Technician at United States
Navy (USN) (1990–1994)Sun

There really isn't as far as that goes.

There is, but it's just transient, temporary. astides change. That's NOT the
reason the Panama Canal needs locks. You can't dig a sea level canal straight
through from oneside to the other.

The country is mountainous. Digging the canal at sea level all the wayacross
would require it to be dug a hundred feet deep in the middle through thecenter
of the country to reach sea level.

No.The locks are not to prevent one ocean from draining to the other. That idea
is utterly stupid.

The locks are to step the canal up to the higherelevations, then to step it
back down on the other side.

Q5         What are the most extremeprice differences for a product?

A5          Gopalkrishna Vishwanath Ihave just average common sense knowledge.

I can get a plain vanilla haircutfor Rs 70, at the localhaircutting salon in
Devanahalli where I live. The barber entertains me with localgossip as he snips
my hair and does not charge extra for the gossip.

In Bangalore, at a fancy salon, Ipaid Rs 350 and thebarber (or hairstylist as
they call themselves) did not entertain me with anystories but wordlessly did
his job after merely making inquiries about whatkind of haircut I preferred.

In California, I paid $14 (Rs1050) for the same haircutand parted with two more
dollars as a tip.

In the retirement home where Inow live, I pay Rupees 63 (84 cents) for my lunch
coupon to enjoy a sumptuous lunch. The quantity is limited only bywhat my
stomach can hold.

I pay about Rupees 900 ($12)for the same lunch served in fancier crockery at
the posh restaurant in theSignature Club resort insideour township, where I am
a member. I visit this restaurant about twice a yearon average on special
occasions or when someone else is footing the bill.Service takes one minute in
the Rs 63/- lunch in our dining hall while it takeshalf an hour sometimes in
that posh restaurant. I get to enjoy fresh air andsunlight in the
well-ventilated dining hall while in that post restaurant Ihave to strain my
eyes in the dim light to read the menu card, and have tobreathe stale
recirculated air that is emitted by the air conditioners in thatrestaurant.

I don’t have to tip the dining hall staff in our retirement home. Ireward them
with handsome gifts on festive occasions, whereas each tip in thatposh
restaurant could buy me at least two lunches in our dining hall.

The satisfaction of havingeaten is the same in both.

I can travel from Bengaluru city to the airport by the new airport trainby
paying the ticket price of Rs 10 (13 cents).

I can also take a cab and pay between Rs 1200 to Rs 1600 ($16 to $21.3)for the
same ride.

I have a plain vanillawristwatch for which I paid Rs 250. ($3.33) It tells the
same time and runswith the same accuracy as fancy imported watches
withprestigious brand names whose costs I cannot pay but merely sigh when I
learnabout them.

I have a simple fountain penfor which I paid Rs 20. (27cents). It writes as
well as an imported pen with a prestigious brand name andmy handwriting and the
quality of my writing are the same whichever pen I use.

I have plastic buttons on the sleeves of my full-sleeved shirts that costa few
paise. (less than a cent). They keep the end of my sleeves as wellbuttoned as
gold cuff links that I once saw in a jewelry showroom. I didn’twant to make a
fool of myself asking for the price because everyone includingthe showroom
salesman knew, from my typical middle-class looks, that I was not going to
buythem.

You can adopt a stray puppy for Rs 0.00 and also pay thousands of rupees for a
pup with a pedigreefrom a reputed kennel. Both the pups will lick you with the
same affection andbe equally loyal to you.

This list can be never-ending! I will stop here and read what others canrecall.

Q6         How has been yourexperience of driving an electric car from Tata or
Hyundai, especially incities like Bangalore?

A6          KanthaswamyBalasubramaniam , Lawyer

Answered 3h ago

My Brother in law is an EV freakand sold a perfectly good Mahindra SUV to
purchase a Hyundai EV whose name i cannot recollect.

I wanted to take a Voluntary drive and his first words were “Dont drivetoo fast
or the battery gets heated”

Not exactly first words one likes to hear when driving a car.

Bangalore has the lousiest roads and on a Manual Car - Driving on 4thGear is a
Skill and i cannot drive a Manual in a Bangalore road beyond 3rdGear. So you
can never know the real impact until you drive on empty roads.

So we drove to a place called Electronic City where a long, long stretchof an
empty connecting road was (Bangaloreans should be able to tell where. Itsnear
an Audi or BMW Showroom on Electronic City)

And The Vehicle struggled to touch 90–100 and mybrother in law kept saying
“Battery will get Heated”, “Battery will get Heated”

Heres my experience

 (a) Battery is LOUSY and may getheated

 (b) Car struggles to give even 90–100 without shaking likea leaf. I could
drive 110–120 Kmph on stretches of the Bangalore ChennaiRoads with my
Volkswagon (now sold off)

 (c) You need to switch on and off the car to Detect theBattery. It says at
times “Battery not detected”. Imagine being in themiddle of a Highway and the
car saying “Battery not detected”

And here is the best part - The Showroom called my Brother in law a fewweeks or
days or months later and said “Sir you can bring your vehicle for aFree
Inspection” and he asked “Why????” and they said “Sir…the Battery ishaving
issues for some Customers” and he asked “What Problems???” and she
said“Sir….some carbatteries are getting burnt and catching fire”

He took his car and they said “No Issues”

Even so the Car is rarely used. It rarely gives good speeds and it claimsto
give 400 Kms but in most cases 290 - 310 is the bestbefore you see the low
battery

And he paid full money so he is stuck with a dead end car that has nosecond
hand value (He advertised it on OLX but no buyers). His Mahindra SUVsold in
exactly 48 hours when a buyer came, paid cash and took the keys.

So unless this EVmarket stabilizes and you get some reputable EVs were
Batteries don’t catchfire or the Range is really what they claim

ICE is the Boss !!

Q7         How do wild animals copewith sickness? Do they medicate themselves
with plants?

A7  Journeyinto the WildAnswered bySascha L
                   Sun

Animals know instinctively whatplants to consume whenthey feel certain symptoms
andin that regard they are more advanced than mankind from who most of us
havelost our connection to that kind of innate knowledge.

Birds, bees, lizards, elephants, and chimpanzees allshare a survival trait:
They self-medicate. These animals eat things that make them feel better, or
preventdisease, or kill parasites like flatworms, bacteria, and viruses, or
just toaid in digestion. Even creatures with brains thesize of pinheads somehow
know to ingest certain plants or use them in unusual ways when they need them.

Anyone who hasseen a dog eat grass during a walk has witnessed self-medication.
The dog probably has an upset stomach or aparasite. The grass helps them vomit
up the problem or eliminate it with thefeces.

The science of animalself-medication is called zoopharmacognosy, derived from
the roots zoo (“animal”), pharma (“drug”), and gnosy (“knowing”).It’s not clear
how much knowing or learning is involved, but many animals seemto have evolved
an innate ability to detect the therapeutic constituents inplants.

Walk daily atleast for 15-20minutes & if walking in parkthen prefer bare foot

Whenever leaving for somewhere At late evening/night or visiting newplace
,share your details and live locations with your closed ones or with whomyou
used to stay in touch on a daily basis .

Keep learning anything new ,learning any skills, andkeeping update yourself
with current/ events issues news .

Get some time daily forphysical exercise & mentalexercises, pranayams,    While

Q9         Is aluminum affected bymagnets?

A9          FerencValenta Natural born engineer

Nov 19

“Is aluminum affected by magnets?”ALL material are affectedby magnets. All
material that consists of atoms are either paramagneticor diamagnetic. If the
atomic dipoles are interacting and align to each other, the material can be
ferro-/ferrimagnetic, and under special circumstances,antiferromagnetic.

The ferromagnetic effect is somethousand times stronger than the
para/diamagnetic effects. In everyday life we call ferromagnetic
substances“magnetic” and everything else non-magnetic. However, the para and
diamagneticeffects can be easily measured, and sometimes they’re just as
spectacular asthe ferromagnetic effect. In labs the Gouy/Faraday/Evans balance
can be used tomeasure the magnetic susceptibility. We used the Gouy-method at
the universitywith great success.

Demonstration of diamagnetism: acube made of bismuth is floating between two
strong, stationary magnets. Bismuth has the strongest diamagnetic effect
amongall metals. Other substances like pyrolytic carbon have even stronger
effect. Both are considered non-magnetic, as with usual magnets the forces are
too weakto detect without proper equipment

Obviously, hydroponics is goodfor plants health ,in thissystem nutrient
solution given for plants at precise level where wastage ofnutrients is
negligible when compared to fertilization at field level may leadto chemical
residue effects.
