Gopala krishnan1-1-2022. 1. LEMON FLAVOUR TOFFEE Commonly called Lemontoffee (Naranga muttai in Malayalam) was available in pan shops in my boyhood days. The thin toffee was available in yellow and orange colours. It was kept in largetransparent large bottle. It was counted for the quantity required and packed innewspaper piece (cut and kept for the use). It had sweet orange flavour. It had the shapeof a small crescent. Now too the toffee is available in the same name, in thecrescent size but thicker than earlier and available in provision shops. Butold flavour is not there. Probably manufacturing by some other company now. 2. CHOCOLATES In my student dayschocolates were also available. Those employed in Bombay, Calcutta etc. broughttoffee and chocolates assorted in glittering cover. On those days Parry companytoffees and chocolates were very famous. On those days thechocolates came in attractive tins of rectangular type with good depth. Afterdistributing chocolates the tins were used mostly to keep stitching needles, buttons and threads in homes. These tins had attractive painting with thepicture of a young lady printed on top. The tins were corrosion resistant fordecades. I am still having such a tin purchased toffees in 1966. Only thing it ispainted two times. In Tamilnadu generally such boxes are called OOSIPETTI - needle box. 3. MANGOBITE TOFFEES Later manycompanies started making chocolates and Confectionaries. Cadbury, Amul etc. arefamous for making chocolates. Parle is not only famous for making biscuits, buttoffees also. 4. Chocolates and toffees in circular metal tins >From foreigncountries NRIs on arrival brought chocolates and toffees in >circular tins.Since the cover had to be removed fully and closed, these tins >had lesserattraction. Tins from India had hinged top cover. Now too we get >metal tins intin shops with hinged cover to purchase. 5. Toffees in packs Now we get toffeesin packs from supermarkets. These packs contain either 50 or 100 numbers. Chocolatescome in packs and it can be broken through marked lines and shared. Chocolatessmall pieces packed in foils also come in packs. 6. Birth day celebrations and Independence Daycelebrations Small children ontheir birth day’s visit and offer toffee and chocolates to neighbours. They arecomplimented mostly in cash. During Independence Day celebrations toffees andchocolates are distributed to the participants. Now too many caterers afterfeast compliment their card attached with a big chocolate. Earlier dayschocolates were small square pieces. It could be easily distinguished fromtoffees which were in other shapes. Whereas toffees are hard and one has to bitehard, chocolates are soft which are consumed by soft bites. 7. Medicated cough drops These are smallhard pieces from companies like, Vicks, halls etc. They are hard like toffees. Manyother companies also prepare such items. Medical shops will be having such coughdrops. These also come in pouches or in plastic containers, each piece wellcovered. 8 Orange bites and mango bites. These are the mostcommon bites available in shops and supermarkets. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
