CULTURAL QA 01-2022-19

BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Why do primates onlyhave 2 nipples instead of more like other
mammals?

A1        ClaireJordan     Degree in biology and folklore;programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper16h

Primates, like horses and cows, are K-selected, meaning that we have asmall
number of offspring and only when there is enough food for them. Thisgoes with
the fact that we’ve specialised for intelligence, meaning ouroffspring have a
long childhood during which they can be taught.

Animals with multiple nipplestend more towards being r-selected, meaning that
they churn out large numbersof offspring, most ofwhom will starve or be eaten
by predators, but the plus side is that if thefood supply suddenly increases
there are spare offspring already in place readyto make use of it.

Q2            What are some lesserknown places to travel in South India?

A2            Siddharth TJanakiraman Spirituality | Advisory - Business & IPR |
AdvocateSun

Relatively less known and mystical Kolli Hills, Tamil Nadu.

Full of medicinal herbs, richreferences from ancient Tamil literature,
meditating & seclusive Siddhas, several remote and mysterious trekking spots
andspiritual caves, many water falls, thick forests, boulders-to-climb, and
alsocomfortable resorts.

Still, mostly unpolluted and less populated.Driving up the 70 hairpin bends is
a very lovelyexperience for motorists.

Together, let us keep our Hills clean and plastic free! They are morevaluable
than our own houses!

Q3            Why is Sri Lankarepresented on the Indian map?

A3            Rohit Virmani I LovetravellingSun

The Law of the Seas has set the limit of the economic zone at 200 nautical
miles (370 Kms) from a country’scoast line…..Sincethe distance between India
and Sri Lanka is less than 40Kms it is shown as partof India Map.……that is how
the zone boundary is determined for eachcountry.

Q4            What is a probablediagnosis for always being thirsty?

A4            Amy Chai MD, InternalMedicine, MS Epidemiology Jan 3

Number one diabetes.  Thirst andfrequent urination are classic symptoms of
diabetes.

Number two is sleep apnea. People who snore and gasp at night are often
mouthbreathing and they get extremely dry throat and mouth.

Number three is medications. Certain medications, particularly
anticholinergicones, can cause dry mouth and thirst.

So there are top three diagnoses I typically see causing thirst. Thereare many
other less common ones.

Q5            Were cavemen strongerthan modern people? How did they go extinct?

A5            Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper17h

If you mean Neanderthals, one issue is that although we’ve no reason tothink
they were any less intelligent than us, they were slightly handicapped when it
came to makingvery complex tools, because their hands were specialised for the
kind of grip andaction you need for throwing a spear, rather than for delicate
work.

Q6            Why does a waterpurifier waste so much water?

A6            Venkateswara SwamySwarna, former Scientist, Metallurgist, Quality
/ NDT Manager at Department ofAtomic Energy, India (1967-2008)Answered Jul 11,
2019

Only RO type water purifierswaste water…they need toremove the dissolved salts
and in that process, they need to discard water thatgot enriched in the
salts…which can be used for many other things…and is thusnot a waste…

If nothing else, allow that water to soak into the ground and that willrecharge
the groundwater…

The other forms of Water purifiers that use Ultra Filtration don’t wastewater…

2ND ANSWER-KhushRaj SinghAnswered Jul 11, 2019

Why so much waste of water by filters one might wonder. Reverse Osmosis (RO)
unitsfilter impurities using a membrane technology, and in turn
requiresadditional water to clean the filter. Due to the high content of
totaldissolved solids (TDS), the water becomes unsuitable for drinking, and is
notrecommended for bathing either and is wasted.

Q7            Do many South Indianleaders feel comfortable in their lungi clad
dress with an Angrakha type clothon their shoulders?

A7            Siva Kumar BachotiFormerSoftware Quality Assurance Manager21h

“Lungi” is the male de facto onlyin Tamil Nadu. Every male wears lungi there.
They don’t mind wearing it outsideof home, nobody finds it odd. Wearing a
lungi, a Tamilian may travel abroad, wear it on the Arctic too! But then, they
are proud of their culture. For Tamilians, a lungi can beboth formal and
informal dress. For other South Indians, lungi is only informal.

When TN politicians wear it, even in the Parliament, they are making acultural
statement, a sort of defiance to otherwise universal norm ( oftrousers). Since
“White” is a symbol of purity, some politicians make astatement of their inner
purity here.

The rule……

I don’t know why he was not wearing a black lungi!

Why TN politicians wear white lungi? For the same reason that “white” isthe
favorite of most Indian politicians. Such a guy may wear a lungi ortrousers,
his top is always white!

He would agree with me when I say, some wear white to compensate for whatis
missing in their real lives!

Now, most Tamilians wear colorful lungis, so do many non-Tamilians butmostly at
home.

My note- They wear white doubledhoties and not lunkies.

Telugu people and Kannadiga’s consider the dhoti as the standard if theywant to
make their cultural statement, they NEVER EVER wear lungi in public. Not just
the politicians, all people. You don’t find any Kannadiga or Teluguman wearing
lungi in public, say, while on dais.

Note, “dhoti” is NOT the same aslungi.

YS Rajasekhara Reddy. This is the way a dhoti is worn!

Malayalis prefer this type of lungi, white with golden border. This islargely
ceremonial, worn on auspicious occasions.

Malayali women wear a similar dress on such occasions.

A lungi is quite similar to sarong, worn in many South East Asiancountries

I hope, all your doubts are cleared!

Lungi or lungi-like female dress is not unknown in Kerala.

My note- As informal dressmany Malayalis and Tamilnadu people wear colour
Dhoti. Somepriests wear it as formal dress in Tamilnadu

Q8            Does great cleanlinessbegin with a clean water tank?

A8            Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered10:09 am

In one word I answer -Yes. If O/H tank is clean you may not get mud and
otherimpurities from the tap water or bore well water stored in it. Worms etc
willnot develop. You get good water for bath, toilet etc. If water TDS is good
you neednot require ROS system. Mainly in ROS outlet water water may beabout 4
litres, when inlet water is 12 litres. This is my observation. I cleanO/H tank,
Sump once in a quarter. After cleaning the outlet water may even 3litres, when
inlet water is 12 litres.

Q9            How can a seniorcitizen survive on one meal a day?

A9            Mani Shankar   Former HR & Administration at PrivateSector;

In our walking group, we had asenior citizen aged 81 who was having only one
meal a day for the last 12 years. His meals was purely vegetarian that
containsplain rice, dal, 2 vegetable curry, Sambar or Rasam and ends with curd
rice. This he used to have by 11.00 a.m. daily. He will eat any one fruit by
6.00p.m. and go to bed by 9.30 p.m. daily and get up by 5.00 a.m.

He had no ailments, had been doing his morning walk for 50+ years andliving a
simple life. He passed away in 2019 peacefully.

In Hyderabad, Akshyapatra, a charitable institution under ISKON
underarrangement with GHMC (Municipal Corporation) arranges simple vegetarian
meal for the poor at Rs.5/-only served at many points in Hyderabad and
Secunderabad city. I amtold many poor including senior citizens avail this and
it happens to be theironly meal for the day. Many use this facility to donate
food to the needy andhungry.

Q10         Is there an animal thatnever leaves its tree throughout its entire
life?

A10          Journey into the Wild Answeredby Victoria Ng Sun

Birds in general will stay asbaby chicks until they are old enough to leave the
nest. The birds will find its own niche and start theirown family in another
tree or area even. Staying close to mother bird but never the same one.I have
observed this from watching the birds. They stay close to their family, parents
and siblings but generally not far away. There are some bird specieswho stay in
a large nest system where they live together in a clan, but most birds arenot
like that. They will visit the same tree where they were raised regularlybut
will fly to other places since they have wings. Most birds are familyoriented,
where they interact within a social family circle.

Q11         What trivial knowledgemight save your life one day?

A11          Thirak Vaishnav Studentat GMERS Medical College, Junagadh
(2018–present)Fri

One of my friend tested Covid positive yesterday. He had 101.6°F fever, so he
took Dolo-650 at 8pm.

I got a call around 10pm, “Yaar my fever isn't coming down. It's still99.8°F.
Shall I take another Dolo?”

After a half an hour of arguments I was able to convince him to not take one.

Now, most of us have habit of taking dolo whenever we feel down, but hereare
the reasons why we shouldn't:

It's paracetamol aka acetaminophen. It's a NSAID. And dose is 650mg. And650mg
isn't appropriate for everyone. We can't give such high doses to children,
patients withHepatic insufficiency etc. It's hepatotoxic drug. Meaning it
causes harm to yourliver. It can cause poisoning at the dose of 7g/day, but
it's effectstart if it exceeds 4g/day.

That is, if you take “Dolo-650” 4 times a day, it will start causing moreharm
than benefit.

As far as fever is concerned, it's a physiological process. Our body
increasesit's temperature whenever a pathogen enters it. Most of the microbes
can'tsurvive in hot temperatures and thus it's our body's defense mechanism.
Sounless the body temperature is high like 101°F +, there's no need to
gethysteric about it.

So what might save your life one day?

Taking Dolo-650 judiciouslyfollowing advise of your doctor, so you can avoid
being poisoned by it.
