VERY OLD ELECTRICAL ITEMS-PART 4 Continuing from part 3 24 Two pin and 3 pin sockets
Very interestingpart of providing power point sockets in very earlier wiring was that two point and 3 point sockets were provided separately.Later all sockets came as three point sockets so that either 2 point tops orthree point tops(Plugs) could be inserted. 24a. Equipment with two point plug One of the equipmentthat still comes with two point plug is electric iron. It means the equipment has self-eartharrangement. Probably the firsthousehold item came using electric power was electric iron. Earlier irons hadno thermostat power control. We had to switch off and switch on to ensurehotness of iron. Now all irons come with thermostat control and a rotary switchto adjust hotness for different types of clothes. Then came floor fans/table fans and pedestalfans. On those days those living on rent purchased table fans since most of therented homes had no provision of fans. These fans had two point plugs. Now toomany use Table fans. Wallmounting fans came later. It is continued till today. These fans areused where ceiling fans cannot be provided. In corridors and pooja room wallmounting fans are provided. Later came themixers. Earlier mixers were imported ones and appeared in some shops sellingforeign items. Later came wetgrinder. Still late appeared coconut scrapper. Many homes still use only manual copperscrapper. Now coconut scrapper comes as additional item with wet grinder. Atone time refrigeratorwas a dream item. Kelvinator was the leader in this field and mediumsize refrigerator started appearing in homes. Frequently we had to defrag the fridge.Taking out all things, and keep the fridge switched off. The ice formed wouldget melted and fall down. There was some sort of net arrangement behind therefrigerator. Later came fridgeswith self-defragment arrangement. Oftenwe could see the refrigerator become very warm on account of defragment. Still later 2 door refrigerator witharrangement for preparing ice cubes etc. appeared in the first part. Now three door refrigerator, the third door/drawer forkeeping vegetables cool. The water afterdefragment collects in a tray fitted at bottom of fridge and gets evaporated. One can see the technician removing the tray and throwing outcollected water when comes for repairs. 25 15 amps sockets and switches The basicdifference in appearance is 15 amps switches looks large. Sockets are alsolarge. 15 amps switch is used for water heaters and motors lifting water from bore well /sumps. Fifteen amperes socketshave provision for both 5 amperes and fifteen amperes. Mostly these are usedfor connecting five amps equipment only like TV, refrigerator etc. Extension boxes and boardsare mostly connected to these sockets. 26 Multi pin For connectingsmall items from a single plug point multi pin is provided. Two mobile phonescan be charged using a multi pin. Multi pin has facility to connect one threepoint plug and two pin plugs. Multi pin has to be handled carefully. Present day plugs are provided withinsulation near plug in the pins for safety Similarly the sockets have insulation near ends andconnection points are little inside. This provides more safety 26a Multi pin for connecting equipment from foreigncountries The equipment broughtfrom foreign countries has mostly square pin tops. Multi pins of later periodscame as a block with facility for connecting these equipment as well as plugpins with round tops. Having children inforeign countries now most homes have two or three quality multi pin (Indianmade) for connecting plug ends either square or round. 27 Extension boards and boxes Nowadays extension boardsand boxes are widely used in Indian homes. Extension boxes are used purely forextending power supply for a temporary period, but extension boxes are used ina semi-permanent manner. Both are controlled from a plug point. 27a. Kolu and decoration lamps There would be rushin electrical stores for decoration lamps to decorate idols, steps etc. of Kolu.Quality fibre extension boxes are also purchased. The transformers areconnected to this extension boxes, kept at a safeplace above the reach of children. The box/boxes are connected toswitch controlled plug points through the extension cords. Mostly in themornings lamp decoration would be switched off. 28 Extension boxes These boxes are semi-permanent, mainly used to connect setup box, CCTVpoints etc. Now a days many tables come with provision of attaching Laptop,modem etc. In modern wiring most tables have fixed extension box and powerextended from a distribution point and extension box itself might have acontrol switch. For each circuit extending from it, there are individualswitches and LED display to indicate whether switch is on or not. 29. Reduced length of charging cable To ensure there isno voltage drop, present day equipment like mobile chargers, Laptop power cablecomes with reduced cable length. 30. Indication at power board for availability of powersupply. Now we haveconcealed wiring in mostly in newly built homes. PVC pipes are laid during RCCworks. From the pipes drops are given to all rooms. Cables from three phasepower point are drawn to the room. Concealedwiring in the rooms are not straight in the rooms. This is to ensure strengthof the wall is not affected. Most of the fittings are done without reaching thedepth of these inside cables. If the drilling has to go inside brick level theelectrician ensures the drilling anywhere near the switch boards. Rotary switches tochange the supply phase to any room and LED indication for each phase is givenin the power distribution panel. In Tamilnadu fromthe last two years we get messages in mobile phones from EB regarding interruptionof supply and restoration time messages are received in Chennai. 31 Satellite channel receiver with dish antenna. A setup box isessential with satellite channel receiver which requires a power point. If CD player is required another point isrequired . So an extension power board is provided for TV connection .Thispower board is connected to a 15 amps socket normally. Charging emergency lampis also done from this point. If CCTV is installed in a home, thepower connection to the modem, processor unit etc. are also connected to apower board. 32. Power supply to laptop, computer etc. Present day laptopscome with small length power cable. Normally it is connected to an extensionpower board. Modem is connected to the power board. 33 Use of plug points The uses of plugpoints are manifold now. Mosquito repeller unit is connected to a powerpoint. A separate power point is madeclose to the point of ROS water purifier. With I phones and smart phonescharging is more frequent. Many homes have mini motor for lifting water fromcane water.
