Q1            Howis the tender coconut priced as Rs. 15, 20 , 30 and 40? How do
we know that theseller is picking up the right one for the right price?

A1            Bhuvana Rameshwar FormerTeacher, 13h

Coconut, tender coconut sellers are experts. They know these coconuts
byexperience.

The price varies based on thesize of the fruit, the volume of coconut water,
whether there is tender coconutin it and the amount of tender coconut and its
texture .

Some have only water. Some have just a thin layer of soft butterycoconut, some
good, thick coconut which he scrapes and gives you after youfinish the water.
Some coconut are for chewing, some just slip through yourthroat.

The price is also based on the taste of the water inside whether it issweet,
sourish or bland. This depends on the place where the coconut stockcomes from,
the colour of the fruit outer cover and the season. Tender coconutsare best if
got from sea side farms and those grown in summer season.

My note- Tender coconut cutfrom tree 2 or three daysearlier also priced less.

Diabetic patients should not drink tender coconut water.

Q2            Whatfruits did pirates eat to avoid scurvy?

A2            Ernest W. Adams Schooltaught me to hate history, but now I love
it. Updated Mon

During the Golden Age of Piracy, people had no clue what caused scurvy. They
thought perhaps it was the sea itself. But pirates were not blue-watersailors.
They came out from friendly ports or hidden inlets to attack shippinggoing by.
As a result, they had regular access to fresh food. I don't think scurvy was
amajor problem for them. Itwas the navies and the explorers who “went far
foreign” who had all thetrouble.

Q3            Whyis Northern Japan so cold?

A3            Steven Haddock Livesin Toronto, ON (1959–present)Jan 18

It’s fairly far north. Wakkanai, the northernmost town in Japan, is at
45degrees north, roughly the same as Montreal, Quebec.Prevailing winds in
thatregion come from the west, over Siberia and Northern China, not from the
east, over the much warmer Pacific Ocean.

It’s also snowy. The Sea ofJapan isn’t terribly warm, butit never freezes over
so those westerly winds tend to bring lots of snow withthem too.

But it’s not that bad. NorthernJapan has roughly the sametemperatures as
Southern Ontario - cold but fairly mild winters and warmsummers. However, it
gets a lot more snow - about four times as much.

Q4            Arecarrots healthier when raw or cooked?

A4            Vern Shellman Havestudied gynecology. Jan 19

When humans developed the use of fire it was a big deal. Cooked meat
andvegetables are much easier to digest. What little nutrition was lost in
theprocess is more than made up for in putting more of it through our system.
You can eat your carrots raw andit won’t hurt you, but you can eat more of them
if you cook them. Itried eating a bunch of raw carrots once when I thought I
needed extravegetables; it sat in my stomach like a rock.

Q5            Issoil a good water purifier?

A5            Hansel Sapkota, FULLTIME BLOGGER AND FREELANCER Answered 5h ago

Hmmm. YeaActually Soil has determined as the good water purifier. Soil is
theplanet's biggest water filter. In addition to soil's physical
filtrationcapacity, soil contains important biota that helps transform and
decomposecertain chemicals and other contaminants from soil, thus helping
filter themout of the water.

Even in today’s world people start making the a portable water filterfrom the
use of soil and other minerals rocks stone and many ,more….

2nd answer- RubenAlaniz Answered 5h ago

Not soil per se but clean sandand small gravel is.

But only to a point. That kind of filter will do a lot for screeningwater but
the end result it still has to be purified afterwards. The easiestways is just
to boil it and you will be fine.

Q6            Doyou have to tie your hair during the UPSC interview? I have
quite long hair.

A6            D D Rishi Former IRS |Advocate | LL. M.,Ph.D. (Law) | Sun

Please keep in mind that most of the UPSC members are 60 plus in age. If you
are a man with longhair, I believe you would get much lower marks in interview
thanwhat you would have got with nicely cut hair. Bureaucracy is very
conventional in the matters of dressand etiquette. Anyone deviating from old
fashioned norms is brandedas a rebel unfit to be a civil servant.

Dress up to the oldies' tasteif you want to score according to your capability.

Q7            Ifthe human body contains lots of relatively harmless parasites,
how do they getinto the human body to begin with?

A7            Ken Saladin Ph.D. inParasitology, Florida State University
(Graduated 1977)Sun

First, explain what you mean (give examples) by “relatively harmlessparasites.”

There won’t be one answer that covers everything. You need to be morespecific.
Parasitesenter the human body from what you eat, what you drink, what you
breathe, whereyou walk, where you sit, where you swim, what pets you have,
andwhom you touch, kiss, or have sex with.

Q8            Willgirls take me seriously if I’m the “funny guy”?

A8            Bhuvana Rameshwar Observehumans Tue

Girls like a humorous guy whomakes them laugh with intelligent jokes and timely
punches . Funny guys are harmless jokers who are usually friend -zoned and not
taken as a serious boy friend. Funny guys are neutral friends whoare sometimes
soul mates too but not as bfs. They may hear us out, console usor even solve
our problems that we have with others.

Humourous guys are intelligentand women fall for them. They see life full of
happiness with a humourous guy. They arouse laughter unlike thefunny guy who is
just amusing and is a good time pass. Humourous guys arepreferred as bfs
whereas a funny guy is a good friend who is not takenseriously even if he
expresses his love openly. It is only taken as a joke.

Q9            Wouldbone be a good building material since it's hard,
lightweight and probablyinsulating since it's "filled with air"? If so, would
it be possibleto use human/animal bone cells manufacture bone building blocks
in anindustrial way?

A9            Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Sun

Bone is definitely not filledwith air! It might seem thatway when you just
study dried, prepared bones in anatomy labs, but living bones are much
heavierand filled with blood vessels, nerves, cells, marrow, etc.

Dried bone would be a poor building material as well, I think. It would’t have
the strengthto support much weight, and it would degrade fairly quickly in
mostenvironments.

But with that said, remainsof structures built from mammoth bones have been
discovered across Europe. The one below, found in Russia, was dated as 25,000
years of age.

Q10         Whydid humans stop sleeping twice a day?

A10          StrangerThings·Answered byAdah Osagie Lawrence Sat

The actual time spent sleepingwas split into two phases yes. Because good sleep
came from sleeping two times – known as first sleep and secondsleep. ... In
between the first and second sleep the person would beawake about an hour
–enough to say prayers during Matins, which would typicallyfall between 2 am
and 3 am, study or even have sex.

Time speed right now on earth is higher than time sleeping, because timeis
going so fast and easy to understand the situation of the time. Our worldtime
on earth is moving so fast.

Q11         Whatare your 10 laws of cooking?

A11          Sangeeta My marriage is5yoJan 21

I leave my kitchen clean at theend of the day so that youcan start a fresh next
day - seeing a dirty kitchen in the morning can spoilyour mood.

I wash my hands before I start with cooking in themorning - This is the 1st
thing that I do every morning.

Survive on minimum utensils sothat washing utensils is not atask - I have
minimal plates, bowls, kadai, and other utensils.

Plan the menu for the completeweek and order grocery andvegetables at once, at
the start of the week - if I am not sure on what I amgoing to cook the next day
then I might not cook at all, so I plan for thecomplete week in advance. This
reduces half of my stress

Don't enter my kitchen - I hateothers cooking or evenentering my kitchen.
Similarly, I cannot cook in others kitchen too.

Cook and chop simultaneously sothat you can speed up and finishthe cooking fast
- I believe that while the kadai is on stove top, the choppingbecomes extremely
quick so I prefer to stick to this method.

Have at least 2 pressure cookers at all point of timeso that you don't have to
wait for the pressure to release to use again - Ihave two, one for the regular
cooking and the other one for my son's food.

Have a small plastic bag in thekitchen top which you canused as a dustbin to
dispose kitchen waste immediately while cooking - thiswould mean that you don't
have to rush to the main dustbin to drop vegetablepeels, masala packets and
other waste.

Prepare most of the powders athome - I prepare Pepperpowder, jeera powder,
sambar masala and few others, except coriander powder athome. Thanks to my
son!!

Always have ginger-garlicpaste, chopped coriander and mintleaves in the
refrigerator - we just need this in small quantity but theefforts required is
huge so better store it in bulk.

My note- Keeping kitchen neat innight and work area sinkneat with all vessels
to be cleaned next day is given a first wash and keeping, makes  kitchen look
neat. It is toldkeeping kitchen neat in the evening and night bring divinity to
home.

Q12         Whichinsurance should I opt for to avail tax benefits and also
useful for me tosurvive until the age of 80?

A12          Prasanna Bhalerao Ihave some knowledge about Indian Finance and
Tax laws Mon

All life insurance premiums -whether LIC or privatefirms - qualify for tax
relief/deduction under Section 80C of the Income Taxact. My advice is:

Go for pure term plan insuranceand avoid endowment, moneyback, guaranteed
return policies. In short, do not mix insurance withinvestments and returns.

Choose a term plan with a coverthat is at least 15 times your annual gross
salary.

Try to choose a term plan that hasa step-up cover. For example, start with a
cover of ₹1 Crat 30 and which climbs to ₹2.5 Cr when you retire.

The life insurance should coverdeath (including accidental death), any
permanent disability that may result in loss of job/income and such calamities.

Take out an insurance policy for securing the future of yourself and yourdear
ones. DO NOT TAKE OUT A POLICY BECAUSE IT GETS A TAX BENEFIT. (The taxbenefit
is an incidental benefit).

As to the latter part of the question (help to survive till the age of80), this
is exactly what my first bullet point is about. Do not mix insurance
andinvestment/return. For retirement, invest in Mutual Funds. You willbe much
better off. Even PF, PPF schemes are better than endowment policies.
