CHAIR There are different types of chairs depending on thepurpose it is used. Chairs have also undergone many modifications. Some typesof chairs have become obsolete. It is a furniture item in many homes at leastfor eight decades. Chair is an item used for relaxing as well as for working. Ithought today I may write about some types of chairs in south India. Hope aninteresting reading for those like nostalgia.
Sincerely, Gopala krishnan 3-2-2022 1 Wooden chairsand chairs with caned seat and back. In my student days there were chairs made of wood withor without arms. Jack wood was used to make chairs. There were also chairs withcaned back and seat. These chairs were more comfortable than fully woodenchairs. Later instead of cane plastic wires are used for caning. Mostly caningand repairing is done by institutions for the blind people. This type of chair is common in most offices. 2. Easy chairs. Most homes had easy chairs. Earlier easy chairs werefor fully relaxing, sometimes for siesta also. These chairs had leg rest andcurved back, (either with wooden or caned back). Placing a wooden plank aboveleg rest, many used to sit, read and write. There was such an easy chair in myhome in Kerala and I have recollection of sleeping in the morning on it. Theminus point with the chair was it occupied a lot of space. This type of chairis obsolete. 3. Easy chairwith wooden frame. These chairs were made by local carpenters as twoframes and hinged together in the middle with bolt and nut with flexibility forfolding and unfolding. These chairs had a thick cloth replacing the canedcurved back. These chairs also had leg rests, which could be folded. The clothwas held in position by two cylindrical wooden rods inserted through the holesprovided in the ends of cloth. Naughty children used to pull out the rod so thatperson sitting without care may fall. On account of this persons sitting usedto ensure the rods are in position. Later the stitching at the ends was made tothe diameter of the rods. The rods were tightly inserted. These chairs arestill in vogue in most homes. Furniture shops sell them in different sizes. 4. Easy chairwith steel frame With the usage of steel for furniture, easy chairscame in steel, painted snow white. Cloth for back rest was inserted through theframe itself. Chairs came with clothes inserted. However the cloth could beremoved if became old from the frame and new cloth could be provided. I hadsuch an easy chair till 2004. Though use is reduced, furniture shops still havethis type of chairs. 5. Folding chairs Folding chairs appeared in rubber wood, wood andsteel. The ones in rubber wood for frame and cushion for back and seat lookedvery beautiful. At one time they were used very common in guest rooms. Foldingchairs in wood and steel also appeared. These chairs had no arms rest. Onesfrom Godrej had an elegant appearance and lasted long. At one time the chairsfrom Godrej were provided for visitors in homes. Folding chairs became obsolete on appearance of fiber/plasticchairs. 6. Steel chairs These chairs with arms or without arms appeared.Replacing wooden chairs, these chairs were purchased. Wooden chairs were pusheddown for some years. These chairs had caning for seat and back with plasticwires and on damage were re-caned. Wider use of steel chairs continued for longtime till the rise of wooden chairs. With the down fall of steel furnituretheir use is reduced. But still in vogue. 7. Revolvingchairs Officers were provided with steel revolving chairs alongwith curved table. With computer revolving chairs provided to staff also. Nowalso executives are provided with revolving chairs, but present day chairs havea raised backrest. 8. Plasticchairs These chairs also come with arms or without arms. These chairs are for temporary sitting. Medium type Kalyana mandapam have plasticchairs. Periodically new ones are provided once their color fades. Both dininghalls and mandapam plastic chairs are provided. In sit outs mostly plastic chairs are provided. I am using a plasticchair for sit and work .I have provided cushion for seat and back rest. 9. Gardenchairs Garden chairs used to sit in lawns and taking rest. Thistype of chairs is also used during small family tours to dams etc. to sit andrelax. Near swimming pool also this type of chair is provided. These chairs arefolding type, with arms made in stainless steel, with back and seat braidedwith colorful nylon ribbon. 10 Barber chairand Old Dentist chair Barber chairs are revolving type with back and seat instainless steel nowadays. Earlier it was wooden. Decades back dentist usedrevolving chair. Now they have adjustable reclining seat which could almostmake a person lie at 40 degrees. 11. Hospitaland railway station chairs For seating stainless steel coupled chairs areprovided in waiting area or platform. Three or four chairs are held together atbottom and have common legs. Earlier these chairs appeared black painted insteel. Now stainless steel is provided with perforations in seat and back. Banksalso provide this type of chairs in waiting area for customers. Since there areno arms in the middle, in hospitals some may relax also in the night, attendingpatients in ICU. 12. Chair cars intrains Since the name is chair car for seats I thought ofmentioning here. These are two or three chairs with cushion back and seat andhaving legs in the end butleast movable. In executive class ample leg space and wider seatsare provided. 13.
