AANA (ELEPHANT)PART 3

Continued from part2

13. ELEPHANT’SDEPLOYED IN FESTIVAL

The two poorams, at Trichur and Aarrttupuzha, isactually a pooram of
elephants. Beautiful male elephants after medical tests areonly permitted to
the pooram festival. Trichur pooram is not the festival of Trichurtemple. It is
conducted at Trichur temple.
14. AAANA-   CLOTHING.
Near to my home, there was a she elephant in theBhagavathi temple (Kulanada).
It was called Vanajakshi.  The Late mahout Pappocchar used to say- The chain
over the body is the clothingof the elephant. An elephant without putting the
chain should not beused during festivals.
It was used to pull cut trees, sized woods, arrangingetc. in forest areas. It
was very obedient and the mahout Pappochar never usedto chain it.
One day morningPappoochar found elephant is missing at the work place near
forest. Where ever it could gowas done in the forest. News came the elephant
has missed and probably wentdeep in the forest.

 14A VANAJAKSHIRE-APPEARING

Mahout Pappoochar remained in the working areas nearthe forest, assisting
others in controlling elephants. One year and a fewmonths passed. Even
pappoochar forgot about his elephant.

One day morning pappoochar could not believe his eyes. His vanajakshi was
standingin the same place from where it was missing with its chain. With asign
of relief he brought back the elephant.

My  elders said-Vanajakshikku saathya sandhatha undu. Athinu pokathirikkan
vayyathayi.Athukondu poyi ( Vanajakshi is truthful. Probably in uncontrollable
estrus itwould have gone for mating.)

My note- I haveread elsewhere  a domesticated elephant will not be accepted
again byforest elephants. However it is a true  incident.

 15. AANAVALMOTHIRAM

All the jeweler   shopsare having rings called Aaanaval mothiriam. They use
a bit of hair from its tail rolled as ringand encased in gold. It is told the
fear would become lesser to  the person wearing it.

16. AANA CHAMAYAM

Before Trichur pooram, the elephant gears- aaanapattam , Thidambu, bells for
fore legs, and umbrellas would  be displayed. This is called AANA   CHAMAYAM.

 17. KUZHIYANA

Kuzhiyana is called ant-lions in English. They live insmall pits on the
ground. When any ant passes by, they flick the earth on to itso that the ant
falls into the pit. They live on ants.

 18. SOMEINTERESTING INFORMATION

When a baby elephant isborn ;its ears will not have folds. As it grows its
ears fold. From the folds onecan know the age.

Asian female elephants do not have tusks. Tusks arenothing but their teeth.
African elephants even the females have tusks. African elephants have large
ears sinceAfrica is warmer than the places where Asian elephants live.

Asian elephants have only one finger like projectionat the tip of their trunk
whereas African elephants have two.

My addition- the elephants  so flap the ears to reduce heat on body. This is
warmness normally. (From the responses by SriVenkat Raman)

There is another heat on the body due to estrus . This is desire for mating. I
read  somewhere read domesticated elephants should be set free in some forest
areas free forsome time. (They may mate in forest)

During Ramayana period the elephants had for four tusks(Response by Sri
RajaramKrishnamurthy)

19. BIRTH OFLORD GANESHA.

nce Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi took the form ofelephants and leading a
happy life as elephants in the forests. At that timeParvathi delivered a child-
It was Lord Ganesha. (I have read this legend in the net)
