Q1         Canyou tell on Tooth decay: The 'healthy' foods that can make teeth
'moresusceptible to decay over time'

The NHS explains brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpasteand
having regular check-ups with a dentist can help to keep your teethhealthy.
Nonetheless, thereare some foods which can damage your teeth. Indeed, the
health bodyexplains: “Diet, smoking and drinking alcohol also have an effect on
dental health.”

Dr Khaled Kasem, Chief Orthodontist at orthodontics chain Impress says citrus
can damage your teeth.

He said: “Oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit are all tasty as bothfruits
and juices and are known for being packed with Vitamin C.

“Just make sure to keep an eyeon the amount you’re consuming, however, as they
arevery acidic and can erode enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to
decayover time.”

Other foods can also have negative impacts. Indeed, it is well known
thatlimiting the amountof sugar you eat and drink is important to prevent tooth
decay.

Further to this, there are foods which can stain teeth. The NHS says wine,
cigarette smoke, tea andcoffee are all teeth-staining culprits. Keep them to a
minimum tostop your teeth becoming stained.

It says: “Your dentist or hygienist can give your teeth a professionalclean,
which may help reduce the staining.”

The American Dental Association (ADA) says: “Your mouth, teeth, and gums are
more than justtools for eating. They’re essential for chewing and
swallowing—the first stepsin the digestion process.

"Your mouth is your body’s initial point of contact with thenutrients you
consume. So what you put in your mouth impacts not only yourgeneral health but
also that of your teeth and gums. In fact, if your nutrition is poor, thefirst
signs often show up in your mouth.”

The ADA says for dental health, it’s recommended that people limit eatingand
drinking between meals.

The organisation says: “Of course, sometimes eating between meals musthappen.

"Unfortunately, most people choose foods like sweets and chips forsnacks; foods
that harm teeth by promoting tooth decay.

“If you do snack, make it a nutritious choice—such as cheese, yoghurt, fruits,
vegetables or nuts—for your overall health and the health of yourteeth.”

DENTIST

“Diet, smoking and drinking alcohol also have an effect on dental health.

Fortunately, there are also foodsthat can help with your dental health.

Dr Khaled Kasem said: “Blueberrieshave very low sugar content and are known for
their antioxidant properties, which helps to prevent our gums from suffering
from diseases such as gingivitisor periodontitis.”

He added: “A firm favourite for snacking, chocolate actually helps to fight
tooth decay becauseits grain contains strong antibacterial agents.

“That doesn’t mean you should eat chocolate in excess, though, but asmall
amount is enough to keep the decay at bay.”

A2          PARACETAMOL is a popular painkiller that can be"safely" taken by
most people. However, this tablet canalso cause a series of possible side

help and ceasing the use. Here's how to spot them.

A go-to painkiller for many, paracetamol is commonly used to treatvarious aches
and pains. Fromtablets to syrup, the painkiller is readily available in
different forms inmost stores and pharmacies. Many take paracetamol without
thinkingtwice about its unwanted effects but like with all medication there are
some tobe aware of.

Whether you use paracetamol to relieve certain pain or reduce yourtemperature,
the painkiller can sometimes trigger side effects.

The good news is that paracetamol“rarely” causes unwanted effects, according to

urine and clay-coloured stools, Drugs.com reports. They advise you to“stop
using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have a seriousside
effect” such as the ones described above.

These two side effects areactually linked with another unwanted effect of the
drug called jaundice.

Jaundice is a condition during which your skin and the whites of youreyes turn
yellow.

The NHS states that jaundice “can be a sign of something serious”, for example,
liverdisease. So seeking urgent medical help is non-negotiable.

liver injury.

This injury can be caused by paracetamol poisoning or overdose.

side effect.”

“Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have aserious
side effect

And that’s where warning signs like dark urine and clay-coloured stoolsstep in
as they belong under the symptoms of jaundice, the Cleveland Clinicshares.

Jaundice occurs when there arehigh levels of the bile pigment called bilirubin
in your body.

This bile can even change the colour of your pee.

Although side effects like these can occur, these are not the onlyunwanted
problems paracetamol can cause.

The good news is that paracetamol “rarely” causesunwanted effects.

To see the full list of side effects, always refer to the patientinformation
leaflet that came with your medicine.

The NHS recommends talking to a pharmacist or a doctor if you noticeanything
unusual or worry about potential side effects.

Remember, it’s important tostick to the right dose as paracetamol taken like
this rarely causes problems.

The health service concludes: “Overdosing on paracetamol can causeserious side
effects.

“Do not be tempted to increase the dose or to take a double dose if yourpain is
very bad.”
