CULTURAL QA 03-2022-26 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Why do train wheels come in pairs? A1 Jeff Karpinski Regular transit user(train/light rail) for 30+ years. Mar 13 Are you asking why most trucks/bogies have two wheels oneach side? It’s primarily forstability and weight distribution. By spreading the load over four wheels each one has tocarry less weight, which spreads out stresses on both the truck’scomponents and the track itself. It’s similar to howmany lorries/trucks have multiple wheels under the load, which spreads theweight more evenly on whatever road surface they’re using. Not all trucks arelimited to four wheels, though. Some heavy-duty railroad cars have six-wheeltrucks, again to increase load-carrying capacity. For example, dual-levelpassenger car/carriage uses six wheels on each truck: Q2 Should I unplug my refrigerator ifI’m away for four months? A2 Loring Chien electrical engineer andaudiophile for 45 years Mar 19 A fridge leftrunning but no one opening the doors will probably cost about a $1 a week. Soyou can save $16 in electricity if you don’t have anything you need to keepcold. I doubt you willhave perishable meats and vegetables and fruits in the fridge that will keepfor 16 week. But frozen foods might. Up to youto decide if the contents are worth the money. If youturn it off, make sure you empty it out and clean it thoroughly and then leavethe door open. On the other handan ice-cold brewski inthe fridge when returning from a long trip could be really nice. Q3 Can you get vitamin D from themorning sun if you have dark skin? A3 Ken Saladin Always Learning SomethingNew (1949–present)16h An excellent andimportant question. For people with light skin, I’ve read (I think) that 15 or20 minutes/day of exposure of the skin and arms is enough to meet one’s vitaminD need. People of darkskin would seemingly need longer, but I don’t know how long. Ofcourse it’s not an either-or question, but involves a whole spectrum of skincolors. Here are some interesting articles on that. The second one says that people at UK latitudeswith “type V” brown skin should get 25 minutes/day, but it dependstoo on time of year—solar intensity differing from summer to winter. It alsodepends on time of day; morning sun is weak. The second reference speaks ofexposure times in terms of lunchtime sunlight in England. Q4 What are pregnancy Hemorrhoids? A4 ApolloHospitals Enterprise LimitedLived in Hyderabad, Telangana, IndiaMar 8 Hemorrhoids, also known as piles , are swollen bloodvessels in and around the anus and lower rectum. This is commonly seen in pregnant women in theirthird trimester when the enlarged uterus puts pressure on the veins, which iscalled pregnancy hemorrhoids. Pregnantwomen experience many internal and external changes in their bodies. Hence theyare more prone to piles. Q5 We know that Neanderthals and modernhumans lived alongside each other and interbred, but what does"alongside" mean in this context? Do we know if they lived in mixedsocial groups, or were they more like warring tribes? A5 Matt Riggsby BA Anthropology, U.C.BerkeleyMar 17 At a minimum, “alongside” means that they occupied thesame territories for thousands of years at a time. We’ve got several cases where we find both human and Neanderthal remains in thesame region, overlapping in time for a considerable period. This suggests that they weren’t trying particularlyhard to kill one another, seeing as humans are known to be very good at killingthings. Moreover, there’sthe matter of interbreeding. Closely related species can interbreed in a verylimited way. The fact that it happened enough that a non-trivial number ofNeanderthal genes survive in modern populations suggests to me thatintermarriage was common.Indeed, I suspect that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens simply saw one another aspeople, not as fundamentally different entities. Bands of them wouldhave interacted with one another just as they would have with bands of theirown species, which is to say spanning the whole spectrum of interactions.Sometimes they would have fought. Sometimes they would have traded peacefully.Sometimes they might have people move from one band to another to be withfriends they’d made and find mates. In not very long, any given region wouldhave bands with every possible mix of members: all Neanderthals, all sapiens, some of each, and a bunch with hybrids as well. Thatsaid, our evidence is sparse, so this is less solid theory and more testablehypothesis. Give science another50 years to march on and we may come to different conclusions. Q6 Can I book a ticket after seeing aTTE on a running train with the UTS app? A6 Prashant Tiwari Indian RailwaysEnthusiast Wed Well..well..well..Everyone thinks the same but this is not how UTS works. The word UTS standsfor Unreserved Ticketing System launched by Indian Railways in November 2018.It is a general ticket booking app that allows passengers to buy unreservedpaperless tickets for a journey between two stations. When it comes to earning, IR is moresmarter than we think. UTSis programmed in a way that it works only in a specific range which is between5 kms-100 metres from a railway station. This range is notprecise so on ground it varies by a good margin. UTS also requires agood internet connectivity which again varies from location to location. You cannot completely depend on UTS for a situation when TTE is about to check yourticket . It is recommended to buy a ticket before boarding thetrain.Do share your experience and suggestions in the comment section. Q7 Is it true that oxygen masks onplanes don't contain oxygen? A7 C Stuart Hardwick Scifi author andscience nerd. Fri The oxygen masksthat drop down into the passenger cabins of airplanes deliver oxygenfrom a chemical oxygen generator sometimes called a “candle.” Once activated, they deliver supplemental oxygen for about 15 minutes, long enough for the crew to get a stricken aircraft under control and downinto thicker, more oxygen-rich air. The bag attached to the mask is just there to equalize theflow of oxygen and help avoid wasted oxygen. The masks worn by the crew deliver oxygen frompressurized tanks, and can do so for much longer.Oxygen masks worn for medical purposes may deliver oxygen from pressurizedtanks or motorized atmospheric concentrators. Q8 What do they do with all those smallhalf-used soaps in hotels? Do the maids just take them home or throw them away? A8 Sharon Wes Studied BusinessManagement Mar 13 I have worked in afew hotels and motels. I’lltell you what I’ve seen. The housekeepers are taught to throw them away. Same withthe toothbrushes, tooth paste, combs, razors, etc. It’s not hygienic or legal to reuse them for other guests. There is no knowing what could be in those little bottles after a guesthas had them. Some guests can be really sick and nasty, so most thingsjust get thrown out. BUT some housekeepers are poor and/or thrifty enough totake the bottles home. A very small, brave few, though. Q9 Are we as humans biologically meantto be in monogamous relationships? A9 Ken Saladin Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy) Mar 18 Humans are muchmore nearly monogamous than most mammalian species, but not perfectly so. “Supposed to be”has no meaning in the context of human biology. Maybe inreligious views of this subject, but not scientific ones. Q10 Is it fair for a spouse to be closer toher parents than the partner? A10 Bhuvana Rameshwar married for threedecades Fri NO. Relationship withparents, siblings are different from the one with one’s spouse. One cannotreplace the other, both are needed and special in their own way. But after marriage prioritieschange. Not only the relationship with spouse has more love, romance, friendship, loyalty trust, fun, besides there is a special, strongbond which cannot be replaced by any other relationship, whatsoever. That is why we naturally restrict our bonds with parentsor lessen them as more time is spent at our new home with our spouse. All other relationships now take a back seat. In fact if a groomor bride has a strong bond with parents than among themselves, they are oftenin relationship problems. Not to forget the influencing effect of some “strong parents” on theiradult child. This micro - managing has often led to many divorces. Parents tendto feed egos! Only ifmarried couples are on their own with no third person in their married life canthey blossom into a truly, happy married life. Visiting parentsvery often is unnecessary after marriage. Some dils runaway to their parent’shome for any and every reason. They hardly stay at husband's place, leave aloneinlaw’s house. This attitude is quite damaging for a married life, especially forstarters. I have two examples of this. One a woman of around my agepaid much attention to her parents, shared more thanhalf her salary, spent weekends only there and hardly visited or respected herinlaws. The husband however visited his parents often and was friendly with hissiblings . They met his parents and others in extended families only at familygatherings inspite of living in the same city, Chennai. Then either he gottransferred or she as both were in bank jobs with transfers every three years. He travelled out station too as loan - recovery officer. Meanwhile the womanwas constantly with her parents much to his disapproval With age he got theusual problems, but she wasn't much bothered or loving enough to tell him to beon strict diet, take tablets or exercise (daily walks). They met once a monthor twice and managed two or four morning walks. Meanwhile he happily ateconvenient food “biryani” with many fried items everyday from restaurants, fastfood and online. And wasn't regular in taking his medications. Finally he retired, she was still in service. He joinedher only to die the same year of a heart attack. A wasted life…of happytogetherness at least after retirement . Another pair muchyounger had a dominant wife. Her parents were a great influence on theirmarried life. He was an introvert and was forced to go to his inlaws house muchagainst his liking. They spent most holidays with his inlaws. But he neverexpressed displeasure being a this generation modern husband . They had twochildren. His stress busterwas his job, booze with friends, fried food, cheese and red meat. The stress ofconstantly pleasing his wife and his ever present dominant inlaws, at theexpense of his own life, space, his parents and striving to take care of hismarried life took away his life at 48. A life wasted… Take care of your priorities . No point regretting afterit is gone. There is a limit to all relationships. Check the line. My note-There are a number ofwomen corncerned about her parents andcoborns than husband especially after middle age, husband just a money giverand wife a food provider. There are many others ( husband/ wife) who talk lessand do things as a routine. All the above QA are from Quora website on 25-03- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers .
