A5 Ponnani in Malappuram districtgot its name in the following way: Manycenturies back Jainism was the main religion followed by people in those days in the region ofpresent Ponnani. Jainism assumedprominence very much and after mass conversion, and the Hinduism became weak. This was aserious issue for the orthodox Hindus, especially higher caste Hindus likeNairs, Brahmins (especially Namputhiris)and others. Theydecided to recapture the lost glory of Hinduism and entered into an agreementwith the powerful Jains. Bothgroups agreed to test their religious power.. They made two identical small statues of elephant in gold and decided to show their religious power on the elephants. They have to make the elephant alivewith their religious power within 41 days.. Whoeverwins will be supreme and the losingparty will have to accept the religion of the winner and convert to that religion. Hindus brought many prominent Vedicpundits and worshipped the golden elephant chanting manthras. Jains alsodid their religious rites to give life to the goldenelephant. After a week the elephant in Jain camp movedits eye lids and the news reached theHindus. A few more days later the Jain elephant moved its legs. The Hinduelephant did not move at all.The worried Hindus thought of various solutions to overtake the Jains. Theydecided to approach Naranaththu Branthan (Parayi petta panthirukulam famous).. A groupof Namputhiris went to RayiranallurMala and approached Naranaththu Branthan and explained their problem to him. After hearing them he put his two conditions to them. One is that they should not question his deeds and the other is that they should repeat whatever he was doing. The Brahmins agreed.. Then they started to the place where thecontest was going on.. Even though the distance fromRayiranallur Mala to the place was not much he madethem walk through forests andmountain in a round about way in hot sun.. This madethe Brahmins feel thirsty and they requested Naranaththu Branthan to stop for drinking water.. He agreed and they saw ablacksmiths hut there.. The blacksmith had no stock ofwater to offer.. NaranaththuBranthan saw molten metal in a hot pot. He dipped a coconut shell (Chiratta) in themolten metal and drank it.. Thefrightened Brahmins ran away from there forgetting their thirst.. Later all of them felt hungry anddecided to have food.. Naranaththu Branthan took them to a parayans (low class) house..There marriage arrangements were going on.. Naranaththu Branthan startedeating the non-veg. preparations andthe Brahmins were forced to contentwith plain rice only. When theyreached their destination, the Namputhri Brahmins told others that Naranaththu Branthan has eaten non-veg food from a person belonging to low caste..This annoyed others who did not allow Naranaththu Branthan to enter theholy pandal.. ButNaranaththu Branthan denied the charges and said that it was the Brahmins who had eaten thenon-veg food.To prove this he vomited in front of them and it was rice andthulasi dalam.. WHEN THE NAMPUTHIRIS VOMITED THEY SAW THE NON-VEG ITEMS THERE. Then heexplained to the vedic pundits that all are Gods creations and noone takes birth as a low caste or high caste person.. This discrimination only wasresponsible for not getting thebenefits of their many days vedic rites. The higher caste people realised their fault and requested Naranaththu Branthan to helpthem win the contest.. Then Naranaththu Branthan took a used broom(kutti choolu) lying in a corner and gave a beating to thegolden elephant. It got up started running!. The place where the golden (Ponnu) elephant (Aana) ran became Ponnani -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
