BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Ifyou have bought a new house, what would you do with your old house?

A1          Gopalkrishna Vishwanath Theonly Real investment I have trusted in
my life is Real Estate20h

I will not say what I would do.I will tell you what I actually did.

I had three houses in my life after living for 11 years in various rentedhouses.

The first house of my own was a four-bedroom, three-bathroom two-storiedhouse
built in 1985 in JP Nagar Bengaluru, and I lived there for 20 years andbrought
up my children till they became adults and left to lead their ownlives. The
previous generation in my family also lived in this house along withus and they
passed on. The house then became too big for the two of us afterthe children
left and maintenance became a problem. We were also growing old.

I then bought a compact 3 bedroom apartment about 4 km away and movedthere and
remodeled my house by breaking the inner walls and creating largeropen spaces
and built one more hall on the second floor and converted it into an office
andran my startup from this remodeled and renovated house while I lived in
myapartment 4 km away.

After I retired even the three-bedroom apartment became too big for usand there
was no further reason for us to live in Bengaluru and suffer noise, air
pollution, traffic, and high living costs. We bought a compact two-bedroom
apartment in a retirementhome in Devanahalli and moved out of Bengaluru after
living there for 44 years.I rented out my home office to another software
company who occupied it for 7years. I found various tenants for my 3 bedroom
apartment and the rents from myhome office and my apartment were my major
source of income for the last 4years.

During Covid, when work from home became common the software companyvacated my
premises. My tenant occupying my apartment also vacated when hebought an
apartment of his own. For some months I had no rental income. Both the premises
were vacant.

I consulted my children who had settled abroad and had becomeAmerican/British
citizens and confirmed that they would not be needing thesepremises at all in
their lifetime. With their approval, I sold both my home office and myapartment
and invested in Govt Bonds, mutual funds, and bank fixeddeposits, and I now
earnmore than what I used to get as rental income.

A house is not just for living. It is also an investment and is
inflation-proof.With each passing year, its rental value increases and so does
its resalevalue. Investing in themwas one of my best financial decisions.

I now own only my apartment in the retirement home in Devanahalli, whereI am
living and I hope that this will be my last permanent address on thisplanet.
The next address will be at the feet of the Lord above and God does notcharge
any rent.

Q2         Whatwould happen if our bones were as hard as diamonds?

A2          Ken Saladin Textbookauthor and professor emeritus23h

That would not be good. It is important that one’s bones be flexible—able to
bend a little inresponse to stress, even in ordinary walking and running. They
alsomust be able to change shape in response to use and disuse over the course
of alifetime. Furthermore, the body must be able to dissolve bone to remove
minerals from storage whenthey’re needed for other purposes in the body such as
nerve andmuscle activity and glandular secretion. Some of the important roles
of boneare exchanging calcium and phosphate with the blood and buffering the
blood pH.There are certain bone cells—osteoclasts and osteoblasts—specialized
forreabsorbing and depositing bone.

Ultra-hard, rigid bonescouldn’t perform the multiple necessary roles that our
skeleton plays and would actually constitute a less durableskeleton than the
protein–mineral composite it’s actually made of.

Q3         Shouldurad dal be taken in a small quantity? Why?

A3          Bhuvana Rameshwar Smartcook, not hardworking 12h

Urad dhal is part of south Indian cuisine but it should be had only in smaller
proportionscompared to tuvar dhal (yellow gram), rice and wheat.

Idly and dosa have only 1/4 or lesser than that of dhal to rice ratio.Urad is
found in vadas which are deep fried. So here it is well cooked in oil.
Otherwise it difficultto digest and causes indigestion, gastritis and
flatulence. Manypeople complaining of chest pain have been rushed to hospitals
thus. Manyconfuse this with heart attack and stress themselves.

Some say urad dhal consumptionin large volumes causes gout or uric acid
accumulation and formation in the joints and kidney stone andgall stones.

Another thing our elders tell is that those who consume a lot of urad land with
deafness. They say ear problems get aggravated by too many urad vadas.

Q4         Howoften should you wash your bedroom sheets?

A4          Gopala Krishnan, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now

Covid 19 strength has reduced and states like Maharashtra has removed theban
like social distancing and wearing of masks. During Covid 19 active period all
bed sheets, bed spreads, pillow covers were washed once a week, applying dettol
or similarmaterials during washing. Ifwe wash bed room items once in ten days
at least one will feel the freshnessand sleep will be sound. In Chennai etc,
summer has already started, onewould not get sleep unless having fresh items
and air conditioner switched ON.In many homes AC is switched in day time also
in Chennai, India.

Q5         Howmany years from now until the world’s oil is depleted?

A5          Steven Haddock LL.B.degree, 25 years in litigation, administrative
law, collections, bankrupty andprofessional regulation Mar 17

That will never actually happen.

However the cost of getting certaintypes of fuel will be more difficult and, as
a result, less cost efficient.

These are oil sands. There’s lots of oil here. However, extracting theoil from
the sand is very intensive. It takes about 1/100th of a barrel of oilto extract
light crude from a well in Iraq, but about 1/2 of a barrel of oil toextract
synthetic crude from oil sand.

This is oil shale. This stuffis everywhere. The Rocky Mountains are full of it.
However, most of it is rock.It takes about 10 barrels of oil to get 1 barrel of
synthetic crude out of oilshale.Mind you, you can burn oil shale

So it’s not about “running out”, its more about “when will oil productionno
longer to be able to keep up oil consumption”.

And the answer to that questionis “no-one really knows”.It’s definitely going
to happen because, as you can see, every oil fieldreaches a peak then starts
declining.

Here’s what happened to anthracite coal, which is as close to pure carbonas
you’re going to find in nature

There’s still anthracite beingmined, but mostly we mine bituminous coal (about
90% carbon) and lignite (about75% carbon). Luckily, demand for those dropped as
locomotives went to diesel, houses went to fueloil, and steel mills went to
natural gas.

Q7         Whydo diabetic co-workers often become so combative when you
criticize and/orexpress concern over their poor meal choices?

A7          Claire Jordan Degree inbiology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper19h

a) because you’reintrusive and annoying and it’s none of your damned business,
and b)because diabetics often have very unstable bloodsugar, and sometimes
actively *need* to eat a lot of carbs in order to get their reading back up to
a normalrange.

Q8         Whatare the different types of cells?

A8          Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Wed

Mostly the same as in a woman,  with the exception of the reproductivesystems.
If you want more than that, get a book. There are about 200 differentkinds
(cell lineages) in a human, and I doubt that anyone here is going to have time
or inclination towrite you an essay on that.

Q9         Howdid the British Empire fall so quickly? It seems that after World
War II, theBritish Empire took a massive blow, and it took another blow after
the SuezCrisis. How can an empire that controlled most of the world fall so
quickly?

A9          Susanna Viljanen Worksat Aalto University Wed

It went bankrupt.

Already in the early 1900s theBritish government noticed the Empire drained
more money than it produced, and already in 1912 there were preliminary plans
todismantle it.

WWI made the British Empire thelargest empire which has ever existed in human
history - and also the most unprofitable. It was a horrible money pit. Only
Jamaica produced profit, Sierra Leoneand South Africa broke even, and all the
rest produced deficit. Johnny Q.Taxpayer from Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and
other towns paid it all andbenefited nothing but dubious prestige.

WWII bankrupted the alreadyweakened Great Britain. It no more could afford
upkeeping the Empire. The plan of dismantling the Empire was dugfrom
naphthalene, and little by little all former colonies got theirindependence.
The living standards in Great Britain (which won the war) andGermany (which
lost it and had been bombed into heaps of gravel) in 1946 werenot substantially
different, and Britain also had the onus of upkeeping theEmpire.

What is amazing is that theBritish Empire dismantled itself so peacefully - no
great wars, no great rebellions, no mass murders - and the formercolonies have
remained more or less democracies.

Q10              Canan Indian individual rely on medical insurance to cover all
its medicalexpenses after retirement?

A10        Prasanna Bhalerao M. Sc.in Electronics & Physics, Fergusson College,
Pune19h

Medicalinsurance policies cover hospitalisation and not regular medical
expenses, doctor visits/charges, etc. Hospitalisation has to be for atleast one
day. But some day care procedures are covered. Prehospitalisation and post
hospitalisation may or may not be covered. The illnessitself must be covered
(for example, HIV related issues are not covered, cosmetic surgery, many dental
treatments are not covered). Hospital must be inthe network. Either
hospitalisation must be pre approved or insurance companymust be informed
within 24 hours of admission. For the hospital bill, cost of consumables is not
coveredbut they may be only 5% of the bill. The medical policy may have
sublimits on ICU charges, room rent, etc.

All this makes it look like that medical policy is of no use. But don't ever
make that mistake. Medical policy is a must especiallyafter retirement.

Q11              Doeseveryone in a family require a life insurance?

A11        HDFC Life One of India'sleading life insurance companies.1y

Life insurance policy is an arrangement between an insured and aninsurer, where
the insurer promises to make good the losses of the insured incase of an
uncertain event i.e. in our case, death of the individual. Theinsured pays a
premium to mitigate this risk. Basically, it is an instrument to cover the
contingencyof an uncertain event.

The one and the most important benefit of having a life insurance policyis to
have a securedfinancial future and maintain the same level of lifestyle even
after a humanloss. Life insurance is certainly important to mitigate the risk
ofunwarranted death. However, it is important to understand whether everyone
inthe family requires a life insurance cover.

So, does everyone in yourfamily require life insurance policy?

Primarily, anyone who hasdependents and is an income earner needs Life
Insurance. Homemakers also offer tremendous economic value toa household.
Therefore it is highly recommended that they are covered with alife insurance
policy too.

Therefore one can purchase life insurance policies for:

1) Family members earning anincome and supporting other financial dependents in
the family

2) Home makers - in whose absence one might have to arrange for caretakers.

If you have dependents in your family (such as parents, spouse orchildren who
are financially dependent on you), then in all such cases a LifeInsurance
Policy will financially support your family in case of your death. Here are some
of the important points to consider to evaluate the amount ofinsurance cover:

1. Number of dependents2. The kind of lifestyle

3. Cost of children’s education4. Investment requirements 5.Affordability and
current level of income

Another point to ponder aboutis - what if you don’t have financial dependents?

In that case, you may not wish to purchase a life insurance policy orpurchase
policies for others in your family. However, if you have plans ofsettling down
in the future, you might wish to purchase a life insurance policyfor yourself -
as the premium amount would increase as you become older. Onceyou get settled,
you can always include your dependents as nominees.

Q12              Whydoes bathroom tap water taste different?

A12        Paul Marra , Contractor(1978-present)Answered 1h ago

All tap water from the samesource should taste the same. There are times when
the water from one tap will taste bad. That isoften due to excess pipe sealant
that accumulates in the elbows. If the pipe isreally old, that gunk could even
contain lead. The fixis…..you guessed it…..new pipes.
