Q1 Where do we have the World’d  Tallest Ganesh Statue

A1 The Worlds biggest idol of Lord Ganesha at Kolhapur, Maharashtra it is a  
feast   for the eyes!*The  actual height of the statue is 66 feet and itis 
seated on throne of 24  feet   high. Weight of this statue is 800 metrictons. 
The statue is built with  concrete.50 crafts men worked for 18 months to 
complete this idol. This  was   built by Chinmaya Mission, marking 
thecompletion of 50 years of their     organization in 2001

Q2 Who started the system of keepingGanesh idols in street and worshipping them?

A2 It  was started by Bal Gangadhar Tilak.In 1893, he worshipped the pictures 
of Lord      Vinayaka in the streets. This practice iscontinuing till today.

Q3 What is Ganesha chathurthi? Does itmean the birth day of Lord Ganesha?

A3 Ganesha Chaturthi is one of themost important Hindu festival in India. It is 
the day on which Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shivaand Parvati was  born. The 
day thusmarks the auspicious birth of one of the most important  Hindu God. 
This day is also known as VinayakaChaturthi or Vinayaka    Chavithi in 
manyparts of the country. It is celebrated on of fourth day of the waxing 
moonperiod in the month of Bhaadrapada according to the   Hindu calendar. 

 Q4 Who started Vinayaka chathurthicelebrations in larger scale as today? What 
was his purpose in mind?

A4 Though the festival is beingcelebrated since times immemorial,the  present 
kind of celebrations of GaneshaChaturthi came in fashion in 1893, Lokmanya 
Tilak, an Indian freedom fighter and social reformer reshapedthe   annual 
Ganesh festival from aprivate family celebration into a community  event. The 
day was conceived to be the National Festival in order to    bridge the gap 
between the Brahmins and thenon-Brahmins in the society.   Tilak chose 
thisfestival for this purpose because Lord Ganesh was       considered to be 
the ' God of Everyman'.It then served as a meeting       groundfor people of 
all community and religion on a public platform. 

 Q5 Where do we have Ganesha mantra toinvoke life in to Ganesha idol during 
pooja?

 A5 To invoke Lord Ganesha throughprayers and  bring life in the idol-. The 
mantra for this can be found in the in the Rig  Veda and is part of Ganesh 
Suktha.

The best part of the temple is thethe huge idol of Lord Vishnu sleeping over 
the snake is turning into gold(it weighs almost 700 kg)! It is  believed that 
when Mahmud of Ghazni invadedIndia in the middle ages, the  people ofthe then 
kingdom invented a black coating which would not wear out even by thestrongest 
chemicals. They coated the large idol with this  so that the plunderers wont 
come to know thatits made up of gold. they   were unableto remove the coating 
after the invaders left. But recently,    in the past 10 yrs or so the coating 
isfinally wearing out little by      little.
