CULTURAL QA 04-2022-07

BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Howmany liters of water does a normal kitchen sink hold?

A1            Joe Ting Answered Feb19, 2020

Measure your sink with a tape measure in decimeters (every 10centimeters).

Multiply and Voila! Sink capacity in liters. I just measured my sink andgot
rounded off 3.5x4x1.5=21 liters. I did not even need a calculator. Sinceit’s
one of two sinks in the counter, I just need to add another 21 liters.
Thebeauty of the metric system astounds!

Q2            Whydid sugar cane evolve to have so much sugar, and most all
other plants don't?What advantage did that give to the plant?

A2            Andrew Dunbar Apr 1

Sugarcane does not have a lot ofsugar. The sugar content (12–18 %) is similar
to many common fruits. eg grapes have around 16% sugars. Sugarcane juiceis a
moderately sweet yellow/green liquid. It is nothing like the refined sugar sold
in stores.

The refined sugar we eat is pure sucrose. The main advantage of sugar cane is
that it isextremely cheap to grow, harvest and process.

Q3            Whatis solo garlic?

A3            Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitalsWed

Solo garlic, also known assingle clove garlic, is about 2 cm to 4 cm in
diameter.

Solo garlic is just one clove and looks like a shrunken version of anonion,
usually with purple streaks.

The medicinal value of thisgarlic is much higher than that of normal garlic,
and it is known as "Penicillin Grown In The Ground".

Solo garlic is an excellent source of allicin, which contains much more
thannormal garlic.

More and more scientific studies have proved that allicin has very
strongbactericidal and anti-inflammatory ability, and itsefficacy is even
better than penicillin.

Allicin has different degrees of inhibition or killing effect on avariety of
bacteria, viruses, fungi and tumors. This garlic is rich inprostaglandins, which
are the protectors of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular.

Prostaglandins can dilate blood vessels, accelerate blood circulation, reduce
platelet aggregation, and reduce thrombus formation.

Q4            Whereare all the other ancient human fossils? We only have Ardi
and Lucy? Shouldn'tthere be much much more? Why haven't we found them?

A4            Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper13h

I’m afraid your information isat least 50 years out of date. We have the
fossils of thousands of individuals of dozens of ancienthuman species. Lucy, for
example, was the first Australopithecus afarensis that we found, but we’vesince
uncovered over 300 individuals from the same species, at leastone far more
complete than Lucy. The Natural History Museum in London alone hasover 3,000
early human fossils.

Just in the genus Homo, for example,we have Homo habilis, erectus, antecessor,
heidelbergensis, naledi,floresiensis, georgicus, luzonensis, ergaster,
rhodesiensis, neanderthalensis, sapiens, theDenisovans and several “ghost
groups” we haven’t named yet because we don’thave their actual remains, just
bursts of unknown genomes suddenly appearing inthe main human line where we
interbred with them.

Before Homo we haveParanthropus, Sahelanthropus, Kenyanthropus, Graecopithecus,
[maybe]Ouranopithecus, Orrorin, Ardipithecus and multiple species of
Australopithecus- afarensis,africanus, sediba, boisei, anamensis,
bahreighazali, garhi, kadabba, ramidusand deyiremeda.

Some of these individual species are disputed and may turn out to be justlocal
races of other species, but even so, we’retalking of around 30 species in
between us and our split from the line leadingto chimps and bonobos - and
there’sno reason to think we’ve found them all yet.

Q5            Whydid they stop bendy buses?

A5            Steven Haddock LL.B.degree, 25 years in litigation,
administrative law, collections, bankrupty andprofessional regulation Wed

They’re still in use, but theycan’t be used on any route with extreme turns.

I rode one a few years ago along Burnhamthorpe Road in Mississauga -about a 55
minute trip! Shortly after it left Islington Subway station, it hadto go past
Kipling Road, make a right, another right, and then a left to getonto Kipling
because the ramp from Bloor to Kipling was too steep and too tightfor it.

Bendy buses, or moretechnically articulated buses, are also quite difficult to
drive. My friend who became a bus driver flunked out on day two becauseshe kept
making tight turns that caught the curb. Articulated buses are evenmore
difficult to get around curves because the very back wheels take turnsvery
tight.

Although articulated buses do allow you to add capacity without addingdrivers,
in the end there are better solutions with trams being at the top ofthe list.
Trams can carry more people and since the back wheels follow thetrack they’re
easy to turn in tight quarters.

In addition, a better solutionfor extra capacity are double deckers. The
problem with those is accessibility andheight restrictions.

A Toronto articulated bus that runs between Don Mills and ScarboroughCentre, a
very busy express route that joins a gap that was supposed to beclosed by light
rail.

Double decker buses run by the GO regional system. They have the samecapacity
as an articulated bus and are pretty much as easy to drive as singlefloor
buses. The problem is that they won’t fit in TTC bus stations which oftenhave
lower roofs.

The bus platform at the Eglinton TTC station, one of the busiest bustransfer
points in the system. The roof is too low for double deckers but asthere is
office space above there’s not a lot you can do about the constraints.A lot of
this will be redundant once the Eglinton Crosstown is completed.

My note- Double buses calledTrailer buses were in Chennai tillabout 5 years
back. Double Deckers were in Chennai till about 15 years back. Now such buses
have disappeared from Chennai roads, with brand new buses ofgood length painted
maroon plying. Breakdown of buses have become a thing ofpast now in Chennai.

Q6            Whatis one reason to not visit Kerala?

A6            Kook Kannan / கூக் கண்ணன் M.B.B.S from Stanley Medical College
(Expected2025)Tue

Here are some reasons why Iwon't visit Kerala:

I don't have a large savingsright now. At least not largeenough to fund an
extensive tour anywhere, not just Kerela.

I don't have a girlfriend. What's the point of visiting God's own countryif you
don't have a girlfriend?

My college has a strict code Ihave to adhere to: mallugirls are only for
mallus. If I visit Kerela, I'm afraid some beautiful girlmight fall in love
with me and my college mallus will beat me to a pulp.If Idecide to visit
Kerela, I won't be able to answer this question. I'm alreadyrunning out of
questions to answer.

I have already visited Kerelaand I can think of only one wordto describe the
state - beautiful.

I am allergic to beauty.

My note- I have added this QAfor the present day youngster’sthinking

Q7            Whatare your suggestions to prevent electrical hazards?

A7            Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom(1966-2004)Answered just now

My suggestions

1, Switch off EB Supply to the point or totally depend on the type ofwork. 2.
Either use insulated footwear or stand on rubber mat and work.

3. Ensure non availability of supply with phase tester on wires whilecutting
them 4. Wearing where ever possible, gloves in hand . One can observein EB
substations where heavy voltage and current are dealt with, staff use rubber
gloves andstand on rubber mat. Keep all tools handy. If one require
spectacleswhile working, definitely use spectacles

Q8            Howdo you eat Vilvam fruit in Tamil?

A8            Bhuvana Rameshwar Knowlittle Tamil, English and Hindi Mon

Yes.. It is called as vilvam in Tamizh, bael in Hindi and wood apple inEnglish.
These fruits which grow on huge trees. Common in Shaivite templebackyards and
is soldin markets during summer.

In our house we had such a tree with fruits, every year. The fruits arecut from
the tree when big and ripened at home. When ready they are yellowish.

A ripe fruit is cut (broken with a stone or metal) and the pulp scoopedout. It
is more sourthan sweet. So we mix in jaggery powder and have it in one or
twospoonfuls at a time. Otherwise many people mix chilli powder, salt and have
ita side dish for rice and chapathis more like a pickle.

My note- I have a friend inOrissa, who once said, woodapple juice is common in
their place. I have not seen it used as drink or foreating either in Kerala or
Tamilnadu.

Q9            Whatdo Americans need to know before visiting Canada?

A9            Steven Haddock 3rdgeneration (or so) Canadian & lifelong
resident; political science major16h

Bring your passport. We don’tcare a lot but you may notbe able to get back to
your own country without one so we make sure you have apassport or other ID (A
“RealID” compliant driver’s license will work) so youcan go home at the end of
your wonderful stay.    Use your inside voice. Americans tend to beon the loud
side by Canadian standards.

Be polite. To everyone. Youdon’t have to be nice, butyelling at the staff at
Tim Hortons because you’ve been waiting for tea forthree minutes is likely to
turn the whole place against you.

Some places take American money at a good exchange rate. Some takeAmerican
money at par which means you are losing a lot of money. Some don’ttake American
money at all. No-one here HAS to take American money. Credit cards are
fine.Every bank in Canada will exchange your U.S. cash for Canadian cash at a
greatrate.

Bring a credit card that hascontactless tap capability. Yes, we will take chip
cards or cards you swipe, but almost every transaction you do inCanada will be
with a tap unless it’s over $200 or so. I haven’t actuallysigned a credit card
transaction in about three years, and that was onlybecause I was at Costco, it
was for about $700, and I hadn’t used the cardthere before.

Leave religion, your ideasabout race, and your gun athome. There are minor
exceptions, like if you’re coming to hunt.

If you’re going to Quebec, grab yourself Babbel or Duolingo and practicea bit
of French. Many people in Quebec speak English well. Many can get by.Many know
little to no English at all. A little “Desole, je ne parle pas lefrancais” goes
a long way. Lache pas la patate! (“Don’t give up”, but literally“Don’t let go
of the potato”).

Roads are crappy here. Accountfor that if you’re driving outsideof the
Windsor/Quebec City corridor, which has lots of freeways. The rest ofthe
country, not so much. Mind you, what roads there are are usually in prettygood
shape.

You can get everything at Dollarama for less than $4 Cdn.

Q10         Isit possible to inherit more ancestry from one parent than the
other?

A10          Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Apr 1

It’s not only possible, butnormal and inevitable that we inherit more genes
from our mothers than from ourfathers, for two reasons:

(1) Females inherit two X chromosomes, one from their mothers and onefrom their
fathers. The X chromosome carries from 804 to 874 protein-codinggenes
(depending on what authority you go by and their method ofdetermination). Males
inherit one X chromosome (fromtheir mothers) and a much smaller Y chromosome
from their fathers. The Y chromosome carries only 45 to 73 protein-coding genes
(again withdifferences of opinion).

(2) We also inherit DNA through the mitochondria. Mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) has
14 protein-coding genes (and 23 genes that code for ribosomal andtransfer
RNAs). Allmitochondrial DNA comes from the mother. One egg cell has 100,000
to600,000 mitochondria, and each mitochondrion has typically four or five
mtDNAmolecules in it, so that’s a lot of mtDNA. That doesn’t mean a
proportionatenumber of genes—just a lot of copies of the same genes, with some
allowance formutational variation. There are several diseases that result from
mutations inmtDNA, so this DNA, less heard of among the general public than our
nuclearDNA, is not insignificant.
