CULTURAL QA 04-2022-12

BEING  A COMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Whatare the differences between small families and big families?

A1            Bhuvana Rameshwar I'ma Parent, aunt, grandparent16h

Small families.. More time andspace for spouse andchildren. Better attention to
children and good quality of life. More freedomto travel and entertainment.
Better savings, if salary is good.

Chances of children gettinglonely and manipulative if both parents are working.
They are more mature but sometimes become selfishand cannot interact well with
others in the society. Some children get pamperedby parents and thus turn out
to become stubborn. Everything has to be taught byparents and teachers
including social behaviour.

Children have to be sent to acreche or to vacation classes or hobby classes to
keep them engaged in schoolholidays. Or a full time nannyhas to be employed.

Big families…more familymembers means, less space, divided time, money and food.
There is not enough of spouse or children time.More time is spent in family
times like meal times than individually withothers. Children tend to dodge
responsibilities, school work and their parentssometimes as they have
grandparents and other elders to support them, rather tohide behind !

But children generally turn outto be more friendly, social and intelligent due
to interactions with many family members around, including grandparents.
Theyare smarter, less sensitive, out going and know to share. More helping
handsand child care are available in case, both spouses are working in busy
jobs.School vacations are happy as there are more people to spend time with.
Theylearn playing various, games,, sportsmanship, arts and crafts at home
itself. They are more confident and pleasant.

Q2            Couldthe Black Death have eradicated humans on Earth if it
reached every continent?

A2            Matt Riggsby MAArchaeology, Boston University Mar 17

It did reach every continent…ok, maybe not Antarctica, but other than that, it
did go global. There arestill wild reservoirs of Yersinia pestis in the desert
southwest of the UnitedStates.

And, as you can see, it didn’t wipe us out. It’s bad, but not extinction level
bad. Sooner or later, waves of plaguewould burn themselves out. Over time, we
got a little more resistant, but moreimportantly a lot smarter. We figured out
how to prevent the spread of the disease, and wedeveloped both vaccines and
cures. It’s still out there, but becausewe invented responses to it, it’s not a
meaningful threat any more.

Q3            Whatif Earth grew 1 kilometer every second for 1 year?

A3            Gopala Krishnan ,former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered just now

There is a limit toimagination. Even planet Sun itself is reducing in size. Not
increasing insize.

Now coming to your question- Humans and all animals in Land occupy only29% of
the size of earth. From this only a small area occupied by humanhabitation. You
started imagination. Now imagine what would happen to earth byits expansion.
Whether it could remain in it’s location, whether oceans willexpand, what would
be the effect of such things etc.

Q4            Whattype of candle burns cheaper than using electricity to light
a room?

A4            David Thomas ProfessionalEngineer, Civil, Alaska Apr 4

A candle produces about 12 lumens of light. 1 watt of LED lightingproduces
about 100 lumens and costs (US average) 13 cents for 1000 hours ofuse.

Alas, no 13-cent candle lasts8000 hours. Here’s a 13-centcandle:which lasts 2–3
hours, so is 2500–4000x as expensive as modern electriclighting.

You’re not going to find a waxthousands of times cheaperunless you take Per
Westmark’s suggestion to steal the candles or Mr.Della-Monica’s suggestion and
use free waste oil in an oil lamp and toleratethe soot and smell that results.

Q5            Howdo you know if it’s 120 volts or 240 volts?

A5            Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant General Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answeredjust now

The best method to make sure is to use a voltmeterin parallel between the phase
and neutral if it is AC or positive and negativeif it is DC. The type of power
distribution is same in a country.Accordingly all the equipment are
manufactured. Some countries manufactureequipment work in 240/120V. Necessary
changes are made in the connection pointof the equipment. Many equipment
working on 230 V markedvoltage will have step down transformers inside like the
mobile charger. They work in lower voltage also. In India the coaches of the
trains haveprovision of power sockets with lower voltage of about 120V and
Laptops, mobilechargers etc functions with this supply. There is restriction of
time periodfor Laptop charging, I read elsewhere.

Q6            Whatare the rules for staying in hotels?

A6            Steven Haddock Livesin Toronto, ON (1959–present)Mar 31

Try to make a reservation. If you just show up, respect any “No Vacancy”signs.

If you drove in, know yourcar’s model, color and license number. It will go on
the registration form. I rent, so I don’t know that offthe top of my head.

Have your credit card ready at check in even if you’ve pre-paid. Don’t be
surprised if there areextra charges (most sites warn you in advance).

Respect check-in and check-out times. If your room isn’t ready at checkin, ask
for a comp like them holding your luggage for free, or a drink at thebar. If
you’redefinitely planning on arriving early, check with them in advance if they
canaccommodate you. If you absolutely have to check out late, see if they
canaccommodate that too.

Once you reach your room, check out the emergency escape information
andfamiliarize yourself with where the nearest stairway is.

Keep your key card safe, likein your wallet.

Tip the housekeeper. $5 aday is standard, and it’s fine to do so after the
first night if you’re goingto be there for a while.

Don’t be afraid to call the front desk with problems. In my day, I had
abathroom light go out and a remote that someone had clumsily tried
tocannibalize for the batteries. They were both fixed very quickly.

The concierge is your best friend. If you need something, anything, they’re
there to help you. On one trip to Montreal I asked whether the casinostrike had
any chance of ending and, with the knowledge that it wasn’t, I wasable to make
alternative plans.

My note- Most star hotels makearrangements somewhere for the person, if he had
gone a little early by flight etc. During Covidperiod my son came on vacation,
onreturn had to go via Dubai to Jeddah where he is working. He reached by 9
AM,but booking from 12 Noon. Three hours he was accommodated in longue.

Q7            Whydoes Bengaluru look richer than Chennai?

A7            Vibhakar T S (Cricket)Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India6h

I've personally been to Chennai only once and I'm the resident ofBengaluru. So
I can give some hindsight about it.

Bengaluru doesn't look richer as compared to Chennai. On an average, Chennai
looks almost as same asBengaluru. Maybe some posch areas in Bengaluru like
Brigade road, MG Road,Koramangala might give those ‘rich vibes'. But except
that, it's almost thesame.

Maybe skyscrapers in Bengaluruare more. Again, that's due tothe fact that there
are a lot of tech parks and startups in the city. I've seena lot of long
buildings even in Chennai. So I don't find much of a difference.

Overall, both are richer. Whileone city is known for ITindustries, the other is
known more for the manufacturing industries. Else, there's nothing that depicts
the richness of both the cities.

Q8            Howmuch electricity do you save by unplugging appliances?

A8            Robert Gross, RetiredElectrical Engineer Answered Mon

Little or zero if they are notturned on. Some appliances usea small amount of
power when “off”; technically they are instandby, with the control circuitry
operating. Devices that can beoperated by remote controls, such as TV sets,
will operate this way. If you are leaving the housefor a long trip, then you
should unplug them.

2nd answer- JoeRovito, I fix ALL of my appliances. Even if it takes years.
Answered Sun

Not enough to pay the Electrician $150 to come out and replace the outletyou
wore out in 5 years instead of 25 from plugging and unplugging daily.

In the US and EU, all modern day appliances are extremely stingy
withelectricity when the device is off or in standby.

For example, AC computing devices have to use less than 5 watts inconnected
standby, and they need to transition there quickly when not in use.

That works out to about $5 worth of electricity every year.

For computers that turn off, and TVs, they have to use less than 1/10ththat
(0.5w ==> $0.50 per year).Every appliance is different, and every classof
appliance has different rules - but generally,Turn yourdevices off when not in
use .  Unplugging them causes needless wear and tearon the outlet and
electrician service calls

My note- I really appreciated and enjoyed the answer telling about wearand tear
of  power socket, replacementcharges etc. Now most modernhomes/offices have
power sockets(plug points)  with switch control. Simply switching OFFthe socket
supply is sufficient.

Q9            Whatare the similarities between cats and people?

A9            Steven Haddock LL.B.degree, 25 years in litigation,
administrative law, collections, bankrupty andprofessional regulation Sat

Binocular vision. Both felinesand primates have two eyes thatpoint straight
ahead. This distinguishes cats from dogs as dogs have eyes on either side
oftheir heads which gives them good peripheral vision but makes it difficult
forthem to focus on objects in front of them.

A fondness for meat. Cats liveon an all-meat diets and early homo sapiens also
lived mostly on meat. It’s only in fairlyrecent times that people have largely
relied on a carbohydrate rich diet.

Being both social and solitary. Most animals are either/or,but cats are fine on
their own, but are also fine forming social groups. Peoplecan go either way
too.

Q10         Whyis it necessary to have many turns of wire in a coil?

A10          Vaman Kulkarni , Ph.DSpace and Plasma Physics, Gujarat University
(1975)Answered 2h ago

More number of turns is equalto more magnetic flux. And each turn can carry
lessercurrent and this reduces the heating.
