PranamQ1 Energy of a day in vedas
1 According to Vedam, Sun <https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Sun> is
the most important among the nine planets which influences the life of an
individual. Modern science also certifies that the entire biosphere is
sustained by the Sun and it is the main driving force for the entire life
support system of the earth. It will be pertinent to examine how Sun was
viewed in ancient Vedic literature. The Vedic literatures talk about Sun as
a giver and sustainer of life. The “Matsya Purana” says “Aarogyam
Bhashkaradichhet” (Sun is the giver of good health). Saints and learned
people in India devised different methods of Sun worship and “Surya
Namaskaram” (prostrating to Sun God). The ray of the rising Sun was
considered very important for the health of all plants and animals
including man. This has the capacity to annihilate disease-causing factors
and bestow good health. According to “Rig Veda”, the rays of the rising Sun
can heal heart problems, jaundice, anemia etc. The “Atharva Veda” also says
that the rays have unique healing properties for heart-related problems and
for patients suffering from anemia.
2 This is the reason why Vedas
<https://www.speakingtree.in/topics/holy-books/vedas> prescribe worship of
the rising Sun by facing east at the time of sunrise. The ray of the Sun
falling directly on the chest is highly beneficial for a good health. The
rays of the morning Sun are more beneficial compared to its rays at any
other time of the day. There is a reference of 22 diseases in the 9th
chapter of “Atharva Veda” which can be cured by the rays of the rising Sun.
Some common ailments given in the list are headache, earache, anemia,
diseases of head, deafness, blindness, all kinds of body pain, stiffness of
body-joints, all types of fever, jaundice, diseases of stomach, poisoning,
diseases caused by imbalance of “Vaata” and “Kapha” elements, diseases of
urine, pain in eyes, diseases of lungs, bones, cartilage, intestines,
genitals, tuberculosis, wounds, diseases of backbone, knees, thighs,
leprosy etc. The “Atharva Veda” further says that living in the rays of Sun
is akin to living in the world of elixir. The “Rig Veda” also gives the
same recommendation and certifies that the rays of the Sun prolong the life
of an individual. Modern science also certifies that the Sun light is a
mixture of seven colors emitted from the Sun (VIBGYOR) and every color wave
has healing properties. ( and same are stated in Rigvedam as chariot
pulling the SUN).
3 Many ailments mentioned in “Atharva Veda” are very common ailments. The
placement and condition of Sun in the natal horoscope can provide clues to
occurrence of such diseases. The placement can also provide a fairly good
idea about the total duration of suffering from a particular disease. This
can be indicated by an astrologer on the basis of a properly drawn
horoscope. Sun worship is always beneficial.
4 In Hinduism, we believe that outer cosmology should mirror our inner
spirituality because our ultimate realization is that we are one in the
same. It is said that the number 108 units represent the distance between
our body and the God within us. According to Ayurveda, we have 108
*marma* points
(vital points of life forces) in our body. So, this is why all mantras are
chanted 108 times because each chant represents a journey from our material
self towards our highest spiritual self. Each chant is believed to bring
you 1 unit closer to our god within. 108 has significance in meditation as
well. There are said to be 108 styles of meditation. In *pranayama*, the
yogic practice of regulating breath, it is believed that if an individual
can be so calm as to only breathe 108 times in one day, enlightenment will
be achieved. Furthermore, an average person is said to breathe 21,600 times
in a 24-hour period. {towards the evening we would have reached 12000
breaths so slowing down of the breadth is required} Half, 10,800, are solar
energy (breaths during day), and the other half is lunar energy (breaths
during night). 100 multiplied with 108 equals 10,800. Also, in Kriya yoga,
the maximum number of repetitions per session is said to be 108.
5 Scientifically the energy is slowed down towards the evening when many
things unenergeti9c shall be avoided. The Vedas talk about the predominance
of Sattva or positivity in nature at this time, making the intellect pure
and radiant. It is claimed that during ‘Brahma Muhurta’, the human mind is
at utmost peace and this is the best time for performing tasks related to
the pursuits of knowledge, righteousness and wealth. Nobility of virtues,
the ability to concentrate on karma, gaining control over our senses and
becoming compassionate towards all creatures becomes easier to practice if
we can wake up early every single day.
6 Sandhyā (सन्ध्या).—Time of union or conjunction. There are three
Sandhyās in a day. These are morning sandhyā (Prātaḥsandhyā), noon sandhyā
(Madhyāhna sandhyā) and evening sandhyā (Sāyaṃ Sandhyā). The meeting time
of night and day, is morning Sandhyā, the joining time of the first half
and the second half of the day, is noon (Madhyāhna Sandhyā), and the
joining time of day and night, is evening Sandhyā (Sāyaṃ sandhyā). Brahmins
should keep the three Sandhyās properly. The morning sandhyā is of three
kinds. Good, Medium and Bad. When the morning stars are seen and the
sunrise is approaching it is good morning; when the stars are not seen and
the sun is not risen it is medium sandhyā and the morning time after the
sunrise is bad Sandhyā. In sāyaṃsandhyā also there is this difference of
time, as good, medium and bad. The time till the sunset is good; the time
after the sunset and before the rising of the stars is medium and the
evening after the rising of the stars is bad. In the Vedas it is
metaphorically mentioned that Brahmins are trees, and the three sandhyās
are their roots, the Vedas, their branches and the rites and rituals
ordained in the Vedas their leaves. From this it is clear that Brahmins
should on no account leave unobserved, worshipped at these three sandhyās.
The Brahmin who does not observe these three sandhyās carefully will, in
his lifetime, become a śūdra and after the death, will be born again as a
dog. Moreover the Brahmin who does not do the three evening, morning and
noon worships, will have no right to conduct any other Vedic rites. After
the sun-rise and sun-set, within three nāzhikas (a nāzhika-24 minutes) the
morning and evening worship should be finished. There is atonement ordered
for morning and evening prayers conducted after the stipulated time. (Devī
Bhāgavata, Skandha 11 chap 16).
Thus energy distribution was enunciated by our ancestors which we are
reading today as western science. KR IRS 17422
