Q3 In nut shell who was Karaikkal ammayar?

A3   In the centre of KARAIKKAL in BharathiarStreet a girl child was born to
DANA DATHAN AND DHANALAKSHMI AMMAYAAR of VAISYACASTE who was named as
PUNITHAVATHI.

Since DANA DATTHAN was fromMerchant Community, he was very wealthy.
PUNITHAVATHI from childhood itself wasa devotee of Lord SHIVA. The life time
ofPUNITHAVATHY is estimated as 6th Century when it was part of CHOLA Empire.

Punithavathi grew up as a veryattractive girl endowed with beauty, and as she
attained marriageable age ofthose days, her father married her toPARAMADATHAN
who was the son of a rich merchant of NAGAPATTANAM.

After marriage also PUNITHAVATHIwho was a Lord Shivas devotee did not leave
chanting of the SIVA MANTHRA calledPANCHAAKHSHARI which she used to chant from
childhood. She was such an ardentdevotee of LORD SHIVA.

One day her husband, PARAMA -DATHTHAN who hadgone on tour for selling his
merchandise sent her two ripe mangoes. It sohappened as if a coincidence, that
a Shiva devotee went to her house.  As customary she was to feed thedevotee.
However the meals were notready.  She then remembered about the mango fruits
her husbandhad sent.  She took one out ofthem and gave it to the Shiva devotee
who ate it with pleasure and wentaway.

When her husband, PARANTHAMANcame home, he was very hungry and asked his wife
to give him the mango which hehad sent.  She gave him one mango which was left.
The mango was so delicious that he asked hiswife to give him the other mango
also.

Now Punithavathi was in a greatdilemma as she had given one mango to the Shaiva
devotee and hence prayed toLord Shiva to help her in this dilemma and LO! One
mango fruit appeared in her palms which she gave toher husband.
It was tastier than the previousmango fruit which he ate and asked PUNITHAVATHI
as to from where she obtainedthe fruit.
PUNITHAVATHI told her husband all theincidents which occurred from the arrival
of the Shiva devotee.  He could not believe this and hence asked herto get a
mango in his presence.  She thenprayed to Lord Shiva to help her in this
precarious occasion and another mangoof the same type appears in her palms
which she gave to her husband. When PARANTHAMANreceived it, the fruit
disappeared.

On seeing this PARANTHAMANstarted shivering with fear thinking that his wife
was having some divinepowers  and cursing his arrogance intesting her chastity
by asking for another mango fruit.  He then thought that he was worthless to
beher husband and withoutannouncing left her feeling that she was worthy of
worshipping and he was not asuitable husband to her.

He married another girl and begota daughter to whom he named as PUNITHAVATHI in
memory of his first wife.

On hearing this news, the ElderPunithavathi’s relatives took her in a PALANQUIN
to her husband, PARANTHAMANwho hearing that she was going to him saw her and
prostrated before her andtold all who had accompanied the PALANQUIN that he was
not worth to be herhusband and also told all who had assembled there, that he
considered her asGoddess.  On hearing these wordsPINITHAVATHI prayed to Lord
Shiva todeprive her from her beauty and to bestow her with an ugly look.

Immediately she transformed asshe wanted. Aftergetting transformed as an ugly
woman she went on pilgimige to KAILASA. theabode of LORD SHIVA .

As she was about to reach KAILASAshe thought that keeping her legs in the abode
of Lord Shiva was the greatestsin and hence went on her head to Kailasa.

The lord withhis consort PARVATHY welcomed her and asked her to take a boon
from Him. Onseeing Lord with His consort Punitha vathi prostrated before them
and told OhLord of Mercy, give me sincere, pure, unalloyed, eternal and
overflowingdevotion unto You. Iwant no more birth. If, however, I have to take
birth here, grant me that Ishould never forget You.Whenever You dance, I must
be at Your feet singing Your praise. This is my onlywish.  Lord SHIVA granted
this boon toher and asked her to proceed to THIRUVALANGADUwhich is known as
RATHA SABHAI among the FIVE IMPORTANT TEMPLES OF LORD SHIVAwhere he is known as
NATA RAJA

She spent her rest of the life at thisplace singing in praise of Lord Shiva.
She is later known as KARAIKKAL AMMAYAR.

She has written two importantworks called ARPPUTHA THIRUVANTHAATHI and THIRU
ERATTAI MANI  MALAI
