Q1 What's the difference between Spontaneous Generation andAbiogenesis? Why is the former considered to be false while the latter isaccepted science? A1 Claire Jordan Degreein biology and folklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper23h Spontaneous generation was anold idea that complex organisms, such as flies or barnacles or mice, could popinto being out of nowhere, instantly or within a few weeks. That could only happen in a Creationist world- it would take a Creator God, or a *very* advanced laboratory, to make such athing happen. Abiogenesis, on the other hand,is the idea that non-living organic chemicals can, through millions of years ofheat and pressure in a planet-sized cauldron, produce nearly-livingcombinations of RNA and lipids which through millions more years can become just-about-livingsuper-basic cells, ready to embark on the long process of evolution for nearlyfour billion years before they can become flies or barnacles or mice. Q2 What is the science behind why grandma was right insoaking mangoes before eating? A2 Sachin Masekar HomeChef (1978–present)May 2 With the arrival of mango season, people are stocking up on theirfavourite fruit to try out different recipes or gorge on its rich flavour. But you might have alsonoticed the common practice of soaking mangoes in water before eating them torid them of the dirt as well as the chemicals used on crops. This is just one of the reasons. Below are thescience of grandma….. According to nutritionists, mangoes contain a natural molecule known asphytic acid which is seen in several fruits, vegetables and even nuts. So, when mangoes are soaked inwater for a few hours, it helps in removing the excess phytic acid thatgenerates heat in the body. Q3 What is the most common misunderstanding that laypeoplehave about biology? A3 Ken Saladin Formerprofessor of histology (microscopic anatomy)Thu I think some people—even some pompous physicists and chemists—think biology is butterfly collectingand leaf pressing, like the projects they did in high-school biology. But as physics and chemistry have started to run out of truly innovative thingsto do within their confines, more and more have turned to biophysics and biochemistryas their sources of new (and grant-worthy) research ideas. Speaking more specifically of my subdivision of the field, zoology, I hadcountless people misconstrue that. In graduate school and sometimes beyond, people would ask me at parties and such what field I was in, I’d tell themzoology, and they’d say, “Oh—do you know yet whatzoo you’d like to work at?” Q4 What are the foods to eat when I have a fever? A4 Lucia Garcia Worked atHospitals May 1 The hypothalamus is a small part of the brain and accounts for only 0.3%of the brain by weight. The hypothalamus is the center of thermoregulation. When bacteria andviruses infiltrate the body and cause inflammation or infection, thehypothalamus may resets the body to a higher temperature. By raising body temperature, the body strengthens the function of immunecells, enhances the ability to kill viruses and bacteria, and inhibits thegrowth and reproduction of viruses and bacteria in the body. Therefore, a fever is a sign of the body's natural fight againstinflammation or infection when body temperature is higher than normal. When the body temperature isbelow 101°F, there is no need to see a doctor and can be treated at home. According to traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, pears have theeffect of clearing away heat and removing fire, which can help Lower BodyTemperature and Relieve Symptoms of Fever. Pears are rich in vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitaminE. Eating more pears when you have a fever and supplementing with enoughvitamins can significantly enhance the immune system. At the same time, pears containabout 85% water. Eating more pears can also add some water, speed up bloodcirculation, lower body temperature, and eliminate viruses and bacteria. However, if your body temperature exceeds 101°F, you will need to takemedication, such as ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, and more. Disadvantages of Front Loading Washing Machines • Front-loading machines will in general, be more costly to buy thantop-loading machines. • The ground-breaking engine can spin garments quick… obviously thatimplies that the machine might be more intense and may vibrate more. In thecase that you are living in a bustling high rise or have the washing machinesituated too near your living regions, at that period you will need a washingmachine that is somewhat more tactful (all things considered, organizations, for example, and Samsung are creating machines with new direct-drive engines, which are much calmer than their more seasoned models). • Front-loading washing machines will, in general, be enormous and occupya ton of room. Their entryway requires to open out also: in a little loft, itvery well may challenge to locate the essential space for the washing machineto stand. Q6 What do people hate most about airline travel? A6 Ramadevi Gidugu Bachelorof commerce from Andhra University College of Science and Technology Sat Air travel itself is a big ritual. Starting from home early, reporting atleast one hour before , (more for international travel) sudden change ofboarding gates in the last minute, cold food reheated and served for many timesexpensive price on flight, etc.. Little leg room, shared handrest etc etc. All these things every one knows. What I hate most is, stinking, sweating next seat passanger. People should take care, atleast should take bath, change in to fresh clothes instead of spraying cheapalcoholic smelling perfumes before boarding. Sometimes really I get vomiting sensation. You may be in a hurry, may not be having time, still, you don't forgetyour phone and laptop. Same way pack one extra top or shirt in your laptop bag.Plenty of washrooms are there in airport just you can change atleast if you cannot wash yourself. A stinking rat smell can't be camouflaged by perfumes. Sometimes if i amlucky I get a seat change. In fully packed flights no chance. Like in train Ican't get up also from my seat whenever I wish. So, what I wanted to tell is,not only appearing stylish or casual, take care of your body odor, don't eatraw onions and garlic and burp. It's simply cruelty towards co-passengers and bad dirty manners. Don't wreck withalcohol before boarding. I hate these unhygienic , smelly passengers most in air travel. When youcan afford a flight ticket, definitely you can afford a clean dress and canavoid smelling like a sheep or pig. I am writing this with frustration because all these fellows are educatedand belong to certain class. Not extreme poor people who may not have theluxury of water to take bath daily. Especially AC trains and theseflights, be aware of your body odor. Otherwise travel by your own vehicle. Q7 When chefs use salt in food, do they generally useiodized salt? A7 Martin Bayer Chef(1994–present)Apr 26 Chefs generally use koshersalt, which isn’t iodized. Kosher salt has a clean flavor,no iodine and its crystals are larger than table salt’s. Larger salt crystals allow you to pick up saltwith your fingers and accurately gauge how much you’re holding. Kosher saltallows you to season foods without using a measuring device, for individualservings, not large batches. If I need to measure a cup of salt, I’m alwaysgoing to use a measuring cup. If I’m seasoning a steak, I can do it by eye andthe feel of the salt between my fingers. If you cook with iodized saltin large batches of food, asin adding a cup, or so, to something, the flavor of the iodine can be tasted in the food. That’s primarily why chefs don’t use it.
