CULTURAL QA 05-2022-19 BEING A COMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Whydo we use hot water to clean dirty clothes? A1 Gopala Krishnan,, formerAssistant General Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004)Answered Feb 17 Hot water ismore effective in removing dark stains and more dirty clothes with specifiedquantity of detergent liquid/ powder in the washing. Earlier dhobies applied steamon clothes with washing soap/washing soda. With semi automatic washing machine clothes keeping onsteam disappeared. With automaticmachines again clothes warming has introduced. Howeverwith strong beating semi- automatic alsoremoved most stains. If not gone, again detergent applied over thestains and washed. Q2 Howcome LED lights never last as long as the manufacturer claims? A2 Loring Chien I know about light bulbsas electrical components Updated 1y Oneis because people don’t read the fine print. Some claimthat they will last 20years but then in fine print say when used 3 hours a day. That meansthey will only last 2–1/2 years when left on continually. Doesn’t sound as goodas 20 years, eh? The otherproblem is that some of the light bulb makers data is from theoretical basis. Some is based on nit picky wording semantics… I have questions about what is anLED - is it the whole bulb system or is it just the electrical diode componentthat emits the light but doesn’t include the power supply and driver? Some LED,the diode parts - are claimed to have lifespans of 100,000 hours which is about12 years… But the LED bulb assembly and the driver which are subject to a lotof wear and tear, if at the same reliability level as the LED will reduce thesystem life to 1/3 or 33,000 hours. In fact, because of the parts count, thepower supply and driver probably have lower lives than the LED and affect thesystem life- the system life is no better than it weakest part. Finally the bulb manufacturers only explain life inideal circumstances. Electronicsin hot crowded spaces like light fixtures have their lives cut short by 1/2 forevery 10 °C… so if the room is 20°C(68°F) and the lamp inside is 40 °C then thebulb will only last 1/4 what it will when kept cool and ventilated at 20°C. Manufacturers like to claim lifeat 20°C when most lamps run much hotter. Most legacylamp fixtures provide poor ventilation because for incandescents, hot neverreally bothered them. Butthe heat really shortens life of LEDs and CFLs as well because of theirelectronics content. Some bulbs I have seen actually have fine printsaying that bulbs mounted base up will last 5–10% less light and life thanthose mounted base down, because the heat rises to the electronics. Finally in adrive to cheapen bulbs, they have eliminated heat sinks. You can see the priceeasily but it’s really hard to see the lifetime when you look at them in thestore. Here’s a modern low priced LED left vs one of the early LEDs on theright… See the giant (it’s metal) heat sink around the middle? Heat sinks help dissipate heatand lower the temperature. My note- Good answer. Twodays back one of my LEDbulbs in toilet failed. I replaced withnew one. Normallyshops give one year warranty. My LED buld lasted one year and 2 months, This bulb burned throughout night. Q3 Whichbones in humans are the most brittle? A3 Ken Saladin Author, Anatomy &Physiology—The Unity of Form and Function12h My guess would be the three middle-ear bones, commonly called the hammer (malleus), incus (anvil), and stapes (stirrup). Most bonesof the body have a substantial amount of the protein collagen in them to makethem able to bend a little under stress; without this, bones of the legs wouldcrack or shatter even under stresses like walking and running, and liftingheavy objects could fracture bones of the arms. The middle-ear bones, though, have a particularlylow ratio of collagen to mineral, making them stiffer so they convey soundvibrations more effectively from the eardrum to the fluid of the inner ear. That stiffness would also make them relativelybrittle, but fortunately, they’re so well protected within a cavity of thetemporal bone of the skull that they’re rarely exposed to any stresses thatcould break them. They can be damaged, though, in exceptional caseslike skull-fracturing accidents and foreign objects forcibly rammedinto the ear canal. Q4 What isnormal in your country but weird in the rest of the world? A4 P. P. Latey MSc, BE Honours inChemistry & Chemical Engineering, Birla Institute of Technology andScience, Pilani (Graduated 1982)Sat Probably noteverywhere in India but definitely in Pune and possibly in Maharashtra. Whilegoing about in city you will see such steel sheet metal things with iron nails or spikes weldedon them :— These are electricity distribution boxes. The purpose of the spikes or nails is to ensure that the lay public doesn't use the boxas a sitting place for chatting or to avoid leaning on them to avoidelectrocution accidents ! Q5 If youeat 6 bananas every day, what would be the effect on your body? A5 Lucia Garcia Worked at Hospitals Sun Banana is anutritious fruit, the sugar in it can be quickly converted into glucose, whichis immediately absorbed by the body and is a fast energy source. Two medium bananas provide enough energy for 90 minutesof vigorous exercise, which is why many athletes like to eat bananas duringcompetition. Bananas are good, but you can't eat too much, Just Eat 2 to 3 Bananas a Day. Bananas are known for beinghigh in potassium and rich in magnesium. If you eat too many bananas in a short period oftime, it will lead to a sharp increase in the levels of magnesium and potassiumin the blood, resultingin an imbalance of trace elements in the body, which is harmful to health. Bananas are high insugar. A medium banana contains nearly 15 grams of sugar. Too much sugar caneasily be converted into fat in the body, leading to obesity. Excessive sugaralso binds with collagen in the skin, weakening the repair and regenerationfunction of collagen on the skin, resulting in premature aging of the skin. According to theUSDA, a medium banana contains 105 calories. Eating 6 bananas a day adds 630calories, which is too many calories. My note- I assume she mentions plantains likerasthali or such size banana. The present day Rasthali are big about 3/4thsize of Nenthran. We cannot eat more than one at a time. Q6 What is avery dangerous part of the UK, that most people don't know about? A6 Claire Jordan May 1 One of the most dangerous things in Britian is thisfairly innocent-looking stream in Yorkshire. It’s called the Bolton Strid. What’shappening there is that a river which was about 30ft wide and6ft deep has turned sideways in order to force its way between two rockoutcrops, becoming 6ft wide and 30ft deep. Fall into it and you’ll besucked down under the rocks and lost. Q7 If a goldwire covered with copper then which metal carrying electron? Gold or Copper? Why? A7 Gopala Krishnan, former Assistant GeneralManager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966-2004) Answered just now Electrons move through the surface of conductor.Hence it is through copper covering electrons move. Physics lessons- in the 2ndor third year of BSc Physics, I have studied Q8 Is a 10mm aluminum wire better than a 6 mm copper wire for the same type ofelectricity supply? A8 Venu Gopal Sharma, Diploma Electricaland Electronics Engineering & Electronics, St Peter's Engineering College,Hyderabad (2019…Answered Jan 17, 2021 Don’t considerelectricity..Consider thecurrent that wire is going to carry under full load then go with thewire with higher cross section area. If the current is more,10mm² wire is better even if it is aluminium. Aluminium has more resistance compared to copper,if the current is less than go with copper it reduces voltage drops so therewould be less voltage drop at the receiving end on copper, compared toaluminium. Copper is first if your situation is different then gowith aluminium. My note- The presentation can be better , if proper wordings are used. Q9 Why am Ilosing my teeth regardless of brushing them 2x daily and eating normally? A9 Readers be warned, dentistry talk. A similar thinghappened to me — I've had tonnes of dental work done over the years, I startedoff with too many teeth and had to have a load removed and ended up withmissing molars and missing front tooth, which made me look like a pirate (thefront tooth came out cos I smacked myself in the mouth with a wooden malletwhich made it loose.) Anyhow what I'msaying is “it happens" and it happens to LOTS of people - lots of people end up withdentures/ partial dentures and bridges before they even get to fifty, we wouldprobably all be surprised with the stats. And by the fact that - sometimes it can happen to thoseof us who vigilantly brush our teeth twice a day —that's what galled me about it, It wasn't caused by lack of brushing or“eating/drinking too many sweet things" Aside fromaccidents, there are lots of other potential causes: It can be hereditary, I had a friend who lost her teethin her early twenties due to weak enamel, it happened toall the women in her family after they'd given birth basically. And…Just brushing your teeth isn't always enough which iswhy it's important to regularly visit the dental hygienist for a deep clean oruse medicated mouthwashes or floss, inconjunction with brushing, keeping your gums healthy is just as important as keepingyour teeth clean. Onceplaque goes beneath the gum line, that can cause gum disease which can lead tobleeding gums and tooth less. A lot of women lose teeth after childbirth, because thenutrition goes to baby, that's another reason for peoplelosing them early, it's quite common. And also never under-estimate the devestating verocity ofimpacted wisdom teeth — mine where basically sideways andinstead of pushing through the gum, they seemed to eject the neighbouringmolars out, (I had hassle with them for years before I could face getting themseen to.) Which brings me tothe point that if you have a tooth issue and don't get it seen to, there's a strong possibility ofplaque getting below the gum line, via a broken or cracked tooth and that cancause the gum disease I've already mentioned. Dentists aregood at saving teeth, if you have a tooth that's hassling you, don't postponevisiting the dentist just because it might not hurt,“a stitch in time saves nine" n all that. And don't be ashamed about it, itis way more common than (I expect) you think it is, so go get a check up andspeak to the dentist about it, it's likely there'll be something that can bedone about it, before you start losing anymore. My note- Now with dental clinics removing a teath costsabove 500-00 rupees. Most dentists try for root-canalfor a damaged teeth, rootcanal cost 2000-00 and cap above 2500-00. So to save a teeth one has to spent4500-00. I do not know about Government and private dental collegesand hospitals, where they do root canal and charges. Q10 Why arewhite mice used as laboratory animals? A10 Ken Saladin Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)May 13 They’re cheap, easy to maintain in small spaces like a“mouse room,” they reproduce prolifically andrapidly (very important for studies of genetics), and they’re fellow mammalswith most of their physiology much like our own. Mice and rats are ideal animals for preclinical trialsof drugs and procedures, to deem whether those are biologically safe per se, before taking the risksof stage I human clinical trials. They’re much easier and safer tomanage that our fellow primates, smaller and quieter than pigs or dogs, and byevolutionary kinship, results with them are more meaningful to human physiologythan results on worms, snails, fish, or frogs would be. (Yet we have learned alot from them too! The first nerve action potentials were discovered in squidneurons.) Not all lab mice are white, by the way. There arenumerous strains of a variety of colors. The ones myclose friend uses in his neuroscience research are black, for example. It’sseldom because of color that they’re chosen for a given study, but rather forother genetics traits, like learning ability or leukemia susceptibility. Coloris merely correlated with these and part of the package. Q11 Whicheating habit is ordinary in your country but strange in the rest of the world? A11 Priya CKnows Tamil Sat This eating, sorrydrinking habit is strange even in the northern parts of India. A habit which is unique to SouthIndia (Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Andhra pradesh, Telangana and Kerala). Using of stainless steel ‘Tumbler (drinking glass) andDabara (container)' for drinking and sipping coffee instead of 'cup andsaucer'. Filter Coffee/Kaapias we pronounce in the south indian slang is prepared and poured hot into steel tumblersinstead of cups and the dabaras are used as saucers for cooling. It involves lots ofpractice to lift the piping hot tumbler of coffee to a considerable height andcarefully pouring it into the Dabara without spilling. When it is poured from adistance, it creates a brimming frothy layer. We then pour itback into the tumbler from a considerable height and drink it this way if wewant it really hot or pour only 1/4th into the tumbler. Once done, pour thebalance in full or in parts as required….:) Q12 How muchis the average cost to stay at the Hotel Taj Mumbai? A12 Ritamay Jana Credit Risk Professional.Ex - CIBIL and McKinsey. May 12 It depends. First of all, there are two different hotels- Taj Mahal Tower (New Building) and Taj Mahal Palace (Old One, HeritageBuilding). For Towerwing, it costs somewhere around INR 9000–15000, excludingthe suites. For Palacewing, the price starts from INR 18000–20000 per night, and there areseveral categories, the maximum can go Upto several lakhs for Lotus suites/TATAsuite. If you are lucky, then you can get an upgrade from Tower toPalace, by the way. All the above QA are from Quora website on 18-05- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers .
