Q2 What is the legend behind Narayaneeyam?

A2 NarayanaBhattathiri was unable to moveand he thought that if he would get
the darshan of Guruvayurappan he might getsome relief. He told his people to
carryhim to Guruvayur. He surrendered himself under the lotus feet of
LordGuruvayurappan.

It was then that he had received an advice from thegreat Malayalam Poet,
Thunchathu Ezhuthachan (considered as the "Father ofMalayalam Language")
to"start with fish". To theordinary ear this might have sounded as an advice
for a non-vegetarian diet, ataboo for a Brahmin. However Bhattathiripad
understood it in the right sense. The suggestion was that the poetshould
compose a work narrating the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Fish, Turtle
etc... Melpathur, whoknew all Puranas so well, straight away embarked on the
project, assisted byhis brother. Thus happened Sri Narayaneeyam.

It is said that the Lord personally accepted the poemby signifying his approval
and also by giving him advice whenever the poet wasat a loss for words.

For example, while dealing with the Lord's incarnationas Narasimha, the poet
could not visualise his form. There upon the Lordhimself sprang out of a pillar
in the temple as Narasimha.

The Lord himself enacted Krishna's dancing on 'Kaliya'and the 'Kaliya
Marddanam' slokas in the Narayaneeyam are set to the same tempoas Sri Krishna's
dance.

According to Bhagavatham, Sri Krishna, as a child, hadbroken a pot with a
grinding stone where as Battatiri wrote that it was with achurning stick. While
he was grieving that he got it wrong, the Lord himselfsaid from the sanctum
that he had broken the pot both with the churning stickand the grinding stone.

Q3 What are Divya desams and padal petra sthalam?

A3  Divya Desams refer to the 108 Vishnutemples that are mentioned inthe works
of the Tamil Azhvars (saints). Divya in the Tamil language indicates"premium"
and Desam indicates "place" (temple).

Of the 108 temples, 105 are located in India, one inNepal and two outside of
the Earthly realms. Most of the Divya Desams in Tamil Nadu follow theThenkalai
tradition. This includes theimportant temples of Srirangam and Triplicane. by
the 12 Azhvars in the DivyaPrabandha, a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses.

Lord Shiva, the other major deity in Hinduism, issimilarly associated with the
Paadal Petra Sthalams, 275 Shiva temples whichare praised in the Tevaram canon
by the 63 Nayanars.

Q4 What are the details of Poonthanam Nampoothiri?

A4  Poonthanam wasborn in the year  1547 in a villagecalled Kezhatur  near
Angadipuram  town in the Malappuram, district of Kerala. He was a great devotee
of Guruvaurappan  and is the celebrated  author of a book  called Jnanapana.

He lived up tothe ripe old age of 93. Once when  the old Poonthanam was
insulted  by the workers of the temple in Guruvayur, itseems  Guruvayurappan
told him that  he himself would  come to the place of Poonthanam  and live
there.

The lord is supposed to be in the temple of LordKrishna called  "idathupuram
"meaning "left side "and in Sanskrit "Vamapuram" .

Q5 What are the details of Bhasha karnamrutham by Poonthanam nampoothiri?

A5 Possibly attracted by the  very famousSanskrit work  called Sri
KrishnaKarnamrutham of Leela Sukha , Poonthanam might have decided to call it
"Bhasha Karnamrutham" . In the 167th  stanza of this great work he says

"By your well decorated  and coloured form ,  you made the entire earth
getattracted  to you,Oh God , Oh God, theworld is also  surrounded by  desire
and great anger , And if my "Bhasha Karnamrutham"  is always enjoyed by the
toungue Then like olden times no one  need not creep under the load of the
tendrilsof Karma  forever."

Unlike  the workof Sri Krishna Karnamrutham    which  are poems drenched with
devotion  addressed to Lord Krishna  , this BHasha Karnamrutham   relates the
story of Lord Krishna  from his birthto  the famous incident of Lord
Krishnahelping Arjuna  to get back the dead  son of a Brahmin. (Mostly from
Dasama Skanda of Bhagwatham.Possibly he got this idea from the famous
Narayaneeyam relating the story of  Lord Vishnu.)

Q6 How many verses in Bhaskara karnamritham?

A6 These are narrated in the first 113 stanzas. Theportion from 114th to the
169th stanza emphasizes the need for chanting the name  "Narayana"  and also
relates  the philosophy of Poonthanam.

Poonthanamstates  in the work that  his Guru was one Neelakanda and that this
wasedited and corrected by  one SriSoolapani.

By the blessings of the dust of the feet of Neelakanda(Author's Guru) ,I wenton
narrating  the plays of LordKrishna  somehow,Oh Mukunda , Victory toLord of
Vamapura ,Please grant me devotion to  your divinefeet.  (117)

Soolapani  putin lot of efforts,To systematized  andedited it ,Put  in lot of
efforts    to make it great ,My "honey to theears " written in local language
,And please  become happy at thefeet of Achyutha.(118)

Poonthanamalso states  that  this work has been written when he was nearing
the age on ninty.

Oh sea of mercy , I was for a long time  longing,Tosee  the toys with  which
Lord Krishna played,Counting andcounting  the singing  of your names,Ninety
years have almost passed by. (148)
