Q1            Whydo only airports have security check not railway or bus
stations In India?

A1            Subramaniam Duraisamy IT Analyst11h

Thanks for A2APriya.

This is the layoutof Chennai Central station area, which is one of the busiest
Railway stationsin South India seeing an average footfall of more than 5 lakh
passengers perday.

You can see ChennaiCentral station area marked as Number 5. There are three
directions from which people and enterand exit the station.

The Southernentrance facing the main road which has taxi stands, bus stops and
opposite toPark and Park Town suburban stations [marked as Number 8 and Number
9respectively].

The Western Sideentrance which has Ripon Building, Central Metro station and
subway.

The Eastern Sideentrance which is along Wall Tax road, coming off General
Hospital [marked asNumber 7].

Imagine 5 lakh people entering and exiting throughmultiple gates along 3
directions. Is is possible or practical to keep anysecurity check counters like
airports?.

The MambalamRailway station in Chennai has two entrances. From the Western
side, peoplecome through the station road market. The Eastern side entrance
people comethrough Ranganathan street market. It receives an average footfall
of 1lakhpassengers per day. Imagine screening that much people.

The primary reason for this is that Railways stations inIndia are never built
for orderliness, but built for convenience.

Railway stations inIndia were built during an era which did not care for
security, orderliness andpunctuality. At the time of British, the Railways were
only used as atransportation mechanism for exporting minerals, cotton, food
crops from theinteriors to coastal towns like Bombay and Madras to have them
shipped toEngland. While there were a few passenger trains as well, but they
were notmuch used extensively as they are used now.

The Republic era stations like NDLS, Anand Vihar etc..havesome security checks
, but for most part we continued withwhat was left to us by the Brits. This is
one of the reasons why trains oftenhave security issues more than flights and
latter is taken more seriously.

Airports on theother hand are more modern and designed for security,
orderliness andpunctuality.

There is also therisk factor. Air travel is more riskier than traintravel. Its
kind of hard to hijack a train and run it into a building.

That said modernday Metro stations in India are also designed for security and
orderliness.

You have limitedentry/ exit options, a concourse from where you buy the ticket
and check yourluggage, and the platforms located at a distance. You can compare
with theabove and see how contrasting the designs are. The first one was
designed forfaster travel and convenience. The second one is designed for
safety,punctuality and orderliness.

My note- About three months back also I had been checkedfrom the southern
entrance near Adyar Ananada bhavanstall for genuineness of travel- ticket to
Bangalore. Before that covid test, sensing temperature, ensurewearing mask were
done. If security check has to be done, otherentrances are closed, entrance
permitted through one gate. At one time Covid check was doneespecially for
passengers from Kerala trains, closing other gates, and making a temporary
enclosure anddoctors checking the passengers. There is nothing like impossible.

Q2            Whymost of the Indian trains are colored in blue?

A2            Anubhab Kundu Trains are myfascination...curiosity and special
interest May 1

In the era of steamtraction , all Indian Railways coaches used to be coloured
maroon.

Above - A WP ClassSteam Loco with old maroon broad gauge coaches.

Above image is of ametre gauge maroon ICF coach.

Back then thesecoaches used vacuum brakes. Vacuum brakes use air pressure to
apply brakes viaa single brake pipe. Thus the brakes of such trains were, by
default, inreleased condition.

If you have seen“The Burning Train” movie based on a similar Japanese movie
featuring a bullettrain, you must have seen the scenes where the villain plants
a bomb in theloco toolbox and introduces the blockage in brake pipe. But why
was he doingthat? The villain was an engineer boiling with envy when his fellow
engineer isselected to launch the Super Express. So he decides to fail the
brakes deliberately bydestroying the train brakes. The train in the movie is
having vacuumbrakes, to the bomb removes the loco pilot and the brake handle
from the locousing the time bomb and that separation in the brake system just
to make surethat train brakes do not get applied even accidentally. This is an
exploit ofthe default-released property of the vacuum brake.

Later on when theWestinghouse Air brake was implemented in Indian Railways, the
requirement toseparately identify the vacuum braked stock from the newer stock
becameevident.

Thus IR started using the dual tone blue livery we are soadept to seeing
nowadays in many trains that had the brake system upgraded.Air brakes use air
pressure to have the brakes released. This means anuncharged brake system with
no air will be in fully applied state and canprevent accidents.

Above - ICF GeneralCoach

Had Super Expressused air brakes, the train brakes would get applied
immediately with rapid dropof air pressure and loud hissing sound from the
brake system and the villainwould be caught sabotaging the train and punished.

My note- Answer is not to the question. Now againmost  superfast trains  have
coaches with red maroon with Aluminium grey. Now the colour system is
accordingto the classification of train, Moreover many trains have coacheswith
90% advertisements. I think blue colour coaches are very rare now.

Q3            Dobananas ripen faster in a paper bag?

A3            Bhuvana Rameshwar Former Teacher,11h

Yes. Keep it in apaper bag. Closed with no air movement. It ripens faster. The
fruits produce ethylene gaswhen ripening. This gas if not allowed to go to the
atmosphere freely theyspeed up ripening.

This kind ofripening can be used for chiku (sapota) , custard apple, papaya,
mangoes too.

At home we keepthem sometimes in our rice sack to ripen faster. We keep them
covered in riceand close the lid.

My note- In the hot summer in Chennai overripening and decaying soon is the
problem with fruits. Most plantains and  half ripen purchased becomes edible on
thesame day night. After 3 days plantains start decaying.

Q4            Whyare bluberries not actually blue?

A4            Lucia Garcia Worked at Hospitals May21

Blueberry's name is arbitrary, and blueberry is notresponsible for the color of
its name.

Blueberries aren'tactually blue, but deeppurple, blueberries are the only truly
naturally deep purpleberries, and the pigments that give blueberries their
unique color are called anthocyanins.

Blueberries are thefruit with the most anthocyanins, and 100 grams of
blueberries contain about170 mg of anthocyanins.

Studies have shownthat naturalanthocyanins are the most effective antioxidants
in the world, andtheir antioxidant capacity is fifty times higher than vitamin
E and twentytimes higher than vitamin C.

Anthocyanins arethe nemesis of free radicals, which can protect the skin,
increase the elasticity and toughnessof the skin, and delay the aging process
of the skin. In Europe, anthocyanins are known as "oral cosmetics".

The natural anthocyaninsin blueberries can be 100% absorbed by the human body,
and anthocyanins can bedetected in the blood 40 minutes after eating
blueberries.

Blueberries are known as the "King ofAnti-aging" for their well-known
anti-agingproperties. At the same time, blueberries are also listed as one of
the fivehealthy fruits by the World Food and Agriculture Organization.

Q5            Unlikethe earlier generations, where couples would happily have
many children, thoughonly husband would be the only earning member, why do many
of present daygeneration avoid having any children, inspite of both the spouses
earning goodsalaries?

A5            Balaji Viswanathan Center-right,moderate conservative.14h

Raising a children is a lot, lot more complicated thanwhat it used to be a few
decades ago. Here is myexperiences as a millenial.

My maternalgrandmother had 8 kids. She likely didn’t even know who studied what
class oreven the school name, leave alone being able to guide her kids in
education. There was no birthday parties, vacations, planned gifts, special
holidaycelebrations etc.

My parents took alot more attention as I was an only child. I had birthday
parties, gifts, vacations etc. Their goal was not to see me sad ever. I had near
unlimited TVtimes, junk food etc. I was with a gaming console as a 5 year old
and with norestrictions.

For our kids, my wife and I think not only about having abirthday party but
also an unique theme for each year careful not to repeatanything. We spend a
lot of time on the right kind ofbooks and gifts. And how to ward off the
negatives — junk food, screen time etcto prevent the same mistakes we did as
children. I try to have far less videogames for my kids than what I had at
their age.

We pay a closeattention to their skillsets and strengths, and how we can groom
them right. Weare recaliberating the approach from our parents and having a
little moresterner discipline from our time (but not as much as 2 generations
ago)allowing to them to sad at times if it is unavoidable.

Raising kids become as much an experience for them as itis for us.

All this planningdrains one’s energy and wallets. And as families move a lot,
there is also alot less family support for many compared to what the parents
had 2 generationsago. Also, women in urban middle class families are well
educated and they wantto pursue their careers unlike the women 2 generations
ago. This was not thecase in the past — women’s careers or ambitions were not
seen as a relevant onefor others, forcing them to sacrifice them in the pursuit
of raising kids.Thankfully that is no longer the case in many families. That
requiresadjustments to the family size.

And many in my generation are raised with very low painthresholds. Many
millenial kids were raised by parents who wanted to stopnothing at making kids
happy. Many of us don’thave necessary preparations for the hardships of
birthing and raising kids. Many become quite tired even to get to two children —
the replacement level.

Schools and extra-curriculur activities have becomesubstantially expensive, and
commute is horrible.Families struggle to just manage the schedules of just 2
kids. The networkcomplexity goes exponential in the number of nodes in the
system.

Q6            Isthere a way to humanely farm animals?

A6            Claire Jordan Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper May 31

Yes, it can be done - it’s just more expensive. For example, you can use
artificial insemination with sex-selected sperm toensure that no more male
cattle are born than there is work for, so male calvesdon’t have to be
slaughtered, and you can leave the calf with the mother andtake only whatever
surplus milk she produces. There are various movements working for this kind
offarming.

Q7            Whatis breathable air made of?

In Indian cities?Do U know that India has more cities of 10 millions than any
other country?

Delhi/ Mumbai - 30millions, Kolkatta city 20 millions, Madras, Hyderabad,
Bangalore, Pune,Ahmedabad, Kanpur-Lucknow twin cities - have about or more than
10 millionhumans,

We breathe: Our air has SO2= sulfur dioxide, CO, CO2,Nitrous oxide. We got
Sulfuric acid rain! True.

Do U know Delhi’sAQI= Air quality index? 250! and today 5th June 2022 -in US
city of Seattle itis 2!

DO U understand? InIndia- breathing air has: only only SO2/ CO2/ CO/ N20. No
oxygen. Yet: we 1400millions do live! Do live!

Davis Appleton, lives in Southeast Michigan (1968-present)Answered33m ago

Oxygen (O2) is the only required component, but you don’twant 100% oxygen
unless at low pressure.

Nitrogen is themain filler gas in our atmosphere, but inert gases like argon
and helium alsowork.

You also need to avoid poisonous gases like carbonmonoxide (CO) and limit the
amount of gases like carbondioxide (CO2) and ozone (O3).

Edward Measure , Retired Physicist, currentAstrophysics Student,Answered 41m ago

Mostly nitrogen, oxygen, argon, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. The most
importantfor breathing is oxygen, but pure oxygen is both toxic and otherwise
dangerous.CO2 and water vapor are needed to keep the planet from freezing and
to allowplant growth.

Keshav Ahuja , BBA from Institute of InformationTechnology and Management

Molecules in the air include primarily nitrogen andoxygen as well as water,
carbon dioxide, ozone, and many other compounds intrace amounts, some created
naturally, others the result of human activity.

Q8            Isthere a way to contact passengers in a running train in India?

A8            Subhasis Dutta Roy Working in IndianRailways at Indian Railways
(2001–present)Updated 1y

Go to your neareststation. If the station is far from your area. Then Go to
your nearest levelcrossing gate.

Try to make understand your necessity for contact withthat person travelling on
the train to SM or Gateman.

If they understandthen gives them full information about that person which you
want to contact, like train number, journey date, etc.

SM or Gateman relay the information to the controller.

The controller will find the train’s exact position.Relay the information to SM
of next stopping station.

SM will announce the information after the arrival ofthat train with the name
of the passenger.

Thus theinformation you want to convey is actually conveyed to the passenger
whom youwant to contact.

Q9            Sincethe Mississippi flows into the ocean and carries all that
mud with it, why isthe river getting deeper or wider over time and eventually
disappearing? Also, where does its water come from?

A9            Edward Mahoney ProfessionalGeologist Fri

The Mississippi used to flow through a delta full ofbayous, shifting sad bars,
And islets. Much of the sediment it was carrying wasdropped in the slow moving
water of the Delta.

The delta wastricky for barge traffic and shipping to navigate. Vessels ran
aground and hadto navigate very carefully.

The US Army Corps of Engineers dredged deep straightchannels through it to make
it better for navigation. Thewater now flows out quickly in these deep straight
shipping channels. Itcarries away sediment that would otherwise be deposited.
The low lying deltaarea is being eroded, with nothing replacing it.It’s a man
made ecologicaldisaster.

Q10         Whenthe TTE allots vacant seats to the passengers with WL tickets,
does he do thatserially (I mean WL 1 gets the first vacant seat and so on)?

A10          D S P CHANDRA SEKHAR Thu

This is some what practically impossible.TTE has to alott vacant berths after
the clearance of RAC in the train. Online WL tickets would be processed for
refund and those passengers arenot eligible to travel even with no. 1 WL.

So the remaining WLpassengers are those who are performing their journey with
counter tickets. They may be travelling in general coach or with some group of
confirmed ticketholders (friends and relations ). TTE can't follow their
seniority. Actually TTE must follow like thisafter RAC. 1General WL2.Tatkaal
WL3.RLWL 4.PQWL. Normally TTE s give preferenceto the senior one if he
simultaneously approached by two persons following theabove WL preferences.
