Q2 Tulsi repeated many times; and so me also repeat once morepl: Tulasī
(तुलसी) is a Sanskrit word referring to *Ocimum tenuiflorum* (holy basil),
from the Lamiaceae family. It is classified as a medicinal plant in the
system of Āyurveda (science of Indian medicine) and is used throughout
literature such as the *Suśrutasaṃhita* and the *Carakasaṃhitā*. It is a
softly pubescent undershrub growing 30-60 centimeters in height. It grows
throughout India. It has simple, opposite, elliptic, oblong, obtuse or
acute leaves. The flowers are purplish in elongate recemes and grow in
close whorls. The stamens are exerted and the fruits are nutlets. According
to the *Rājanighaṇṭu* (verse 10.148-149), Holy basil (*tulasī*) has the
following synonyms: Surasā, Surabhi, Subhagā, Sugandhā, Suradundubhi,
Surejyā, Viṣṇuvallabhā, Vaiṣṇavī, Haripriyā, Pretarākṣasī, Apetarākṣasī,
Amṛtā, Devadundhubhi, Puṇyā, Pavitrā, Pāvanī, Pūtapattrī, Bahupattrī,
Bhūtakeśī, Tīvrā, Bhūtaghnī, Garaghna, Kaṭhillaka, Kaṭhiñjara, Kāyasthā,
Bhāravi, Tridaśamañjarī, Mañjarī and Gaurī.
2 Tulasī (तुलसी) refers to a “sacred plant” (whose leaves and
blossoms are used by Vaiṣṇavas in the worship of Śrī kṛṣṇa), according to
the Arcana-dīpikā (manual on deity worship).—Accordingly, while explaining
the rules for picking flowers and Tulasī leaves:—Pay obeisances to Śrī
Bhagavān, beg for His mercy, and pick flowers and *tulasī* according to the
proper rules. It is prohibited to collect *tulasī* leaves without having
bathed. Pick *tulasī* only after taking a morning bath. One can pick
flowers before bathing, as there is no prohibition regarding picking
flowers before one’s bath. If one is unable to take bath, one should put on
fresh cloth, bathe by meditation (*mantra-snāna*), and then, with pure
consciousness, pick flowers and *tulasī* leaves. Special considerations for
*tulasī*:—After bathing and performing *āhnika* (the chanting of the
*dīkṣā-mantras*), bathe *tulasī* [by pouring water on her soil], while
chanting her bathing *mantra*. Then offer her *praṇāma* while chanting her
*praṇāma-mantra*. Then, while chanting the *mantra* for picking *tulasī* (
*cayana-mantra*), pick the leaf that is joined with the stem, or else pick
soft *mañjarīs* (flower buds) that are joined with the leaves and stem. each
leaf is to be picked with the right hand, individually and very carefully,
so that tulasī-devī will not experience any kind of pain. After picking her
leaves, recite the prayers begging for forgiveness (
*aparādha-kṣamāprārthanā-mantra*), for having caused her any pain. [...]
For others (non-Vaiṣṇavas), picking *tulasī* is prohibited on certain days.
For pure Vaiṣṇavas though, picking *tulasī* is only prohibited on the day of
*dvādaśī*. one may use unoffered *tulasī* leaves from the previous day or
dried *tulasī* leaves picked many days before. One should not put *tulasī* on
the feet of *śrī gurudeva*. Moreover, while picking *tulasī*, do not pick
with the pointer finger and do not use your fingernails. One should pick
*tulasī* leaves with the sole intention of using them in the service of
Bhagavān, nothing else. One should not pick flowers or *tulasī* once the
sun has started to set.  { VAISHNAVISM}
3 Chapter 8 - The Greatness of Tulasī (Basil Plant) SKANDA
PURANAM *Brahmā
said**:*

2. In the month of Kārttika
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/karttika#purana> one should take bath
early in the morning. Remaining pure in body and mind, he should be devoted
to Viṣṇu <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/vishnu#purana>. Then he
should worship Dāmodara
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/damodara#purana> with tender Tulasī
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/tulasi#purana> (Basil) leaves.
Thereby he attains salvation. There is no doubt about it.

3. If one is devoid of devotion but worships the Lord with gold and other
(valuable) things, the Lord does not accept the worship. There is no doubt
about it.

7. Listen to the greatness of Tulasī which is destructive of sins and is
conducive to the increase of merit. I shall recount to you what was
formerly narrated to Ramā <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/rama#purana> by
Viṣṇu.

8. After the advent of the month of Kārttika, those men who devoutly
worship Tulasī and Hari, attain the highest region.

11. If a person takes bath in the water that has come into contact with
Tulasī leaves, he shall be rid of all sins. He rejoices in the abode of
Viṣṇu.

12. Even if a person makes a raised platform for planting Tulasī, O great
sage, he gets instantly rid of his sins thereby. He becomes worthy of being
absorbed in Brahman <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/brahman#purana>.

13. O Brāhmaṇa <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/brahmana#purana>, the
house in which there is a grove of Tulasī plants becomes a sacred place.
The servants of Yama <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/yama#purana> do
not go there.

14. The grove of Tulasī plants is meritorious. It destroys all sins. It
yields what is desired. The excellent persons who plant it, do not see
Bhāskari <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/bhaskari#purana> (Yama, the
god of Death).

15. If a man smears scented unguents (upon his body) mixed with (powdered)
Tulasī twigs, the sin that is being committed will not (even) touch his
body.

16. For the propitiation of the Pitṭs (Manes), Śrāddha
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/shraddha#purana> should be performed,
O Brāhmaṇa, where there is the shade of Tulasī plants.

17. Even Yama is not powerful enough to look at (directly) a person,
if a Tulasī
leaf is visible in his mouth, ears or head; what to speak of his awful
messengers!

21-22. They were endowed with kindness and compassion towards all living
beings. They were conversant with all essential principles (of philosophy).
Once those excellent Brāhmaṇas were engaged in pilgrimage to holy places.
They were going through a forest once, when they became utterly exhausted
at a certain place. The two Brāhmaṇas, the suppressors of their enemies,
saw a grove of Tulasī plants there.

23. On seeing that great grove of Tulasī plants one of those two, nameley
Sumedhas, circumambulated it and bowed down to it with devotion.

Viṣṇu (in the form of Dhanvantari) held in his hands the pot of nectar that
bestows immunity from old age and immortality. Holding the pot of excellent
base and glancing at it, he experienced the highest mental satisfaction.
Drops of his tears of joy fell into the pot of nectar forming circular
figures which immediately became Tulasī.[2]

35-40. Lakṣmī endowed with all good features and adorned with all
ornaments, was also born therefrom.

Devas headed by Brahmā gave unto Han, Lakṣmī and Tulasī that had originated
there. Lord Hari accepted them. That is why Tulasī is exceedingly pleasing
to the Lord of the worlds.

Thus, O Nārada <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/narada#purana>, who
can (adequately) describe the greatness of Tulasī? Hence, O Nārada, in this
month of Kārttika which brings delight to Hari, the worship of Tulasī
should be performed. There is no doubt about it.
This version of Tulasī’s creation is special to this Purāṇa. In *Devī
Bhāgavata* the plant is identified with Mahā-Lakṣmī and is a daughter of
King Dharmadhvaja (DB IX 15-24). According to PdP VI (Uttara Khaṇḍa Chs.
3-16) Vṛndā, the wife of Jalandhara, became Tulasī in the next birth.

Kṣīra (क्षीर) refers to “condensed milk”, forming part of a common diet in
ancient Kashmir (Kaśmīra) as mentioned in the Nīlamatapurāṇa.—Gorasa seems
to have been an important item of diet. Mention is made of condensed milk
called *kṣīra* and of food preparations mixed with milk (verses 440, 444,
532, 708, 719). Most of the references to the articles of diet occur in the
Nīlamata in connection with the offerings made to the gods but it is not
difficult to infer from them the food and drink of the common people
because “what a man eats his gods eat”.

Kṣīra (“milk”) is of eight kinds, according to the Haridas Sanskrit Series
edition with a couplet of unknown origin. Accordingly:—“Coming from a cow (
*gavya*), buffalo (*māhiṣa*), goat (*āja*), camel (*kārabha*), woman (
*straiṇa*), sheep (*āvika*), elephant (*aibha*), and solid-hoofed animal (
*aikaśapha*): thus milk [viz., *kṣīra*] (is) held (to be) eightfold”. (cf.
verse 5.20ff of the Aṣṭāṅgahṛdayasaṃhitā
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/ashtangahridayasamhita#ayurveda>
(Sūtrasthāna)
and Suśrutasaṃhitā verse I.45.47)

Kṣīra (क्षीर) refers to an “milk” and is commonly found in literature
dealing with the topics of dietetics and culinary art, also known as
Pākaśāstra <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/pakashastra#ayurveda> or
Pākakalā <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/pakakala#ayurveda>.—According
to Ayurvedic treatises, milk was considered a complete diet and is
recommended as the most nourishing food (see Bhelasaṃhitā Sūtrasthāna
XXVIII.17-18). Caraka mentions the milk of cows, buffaloes, goats, mares,
sheeps, elephants, camels and women which were commonly used (see
Carakasaṃhitā Sūtrasthāna I.106). According to Suśruta, the milk and ghee
of a cow were considered the best (see Suśrutasaṃhitā Sūtrasthāna 6.336).
He also states that the milk of buffaloes was considered good for certain
persons who have a good digestive system. Suśruta says that unboiled milk
was considered heavy while freshly milked warm milk was considered
wholesome. Over boiled milk was considered difficult to digest.

The Aṣṭāṅgasaṅgraha (Sūtrasthāna VI.62) states that fresh warm milk was
considered wholesome as nectar itself. Aṣṭāṅgahṛdaya (VIII.508) states that
milk is recommended as a suitable diet for the convalescent, the old,
children and ascetics. Milk was used in various forms referred to in
Mānasollāsa (3.1567). Agnipurāṇa (164.10) describes certain sweet
preparations such as *kṣīraprakāra*, *kṣīravaṭa* and *kṣīrayaṣṭikā* wherein
milk is the principal ingredient.

Kṣīra or “milk” is mutually incompatible (*viruddhāhāra*) with the
following: Ānūpamāmṣa (the meat of animals living in marshy lands) and
fruit of Lakuca (the fruit of bread-fruit tree), according to the 17th
century Bhojanakutūhala in the *dravyaguṇāguṇa-kathana*, which contains the
discussions on different food articles and their dietetic effects according
to the prominent Ayurvedic treatises.

Kṣīra (milk) is mentioned in a list of remedies for indigestion.—A complete
section in Bhojanakutūhala is devoted for the description of agents that
cause indigestion [viz., *rasāla* (a curd drink)]. These agents consumed on
a large scale can cause indigestion for certain people. The remedies [viz.,
*kṣīra* (milk)] for these types of indigestions are also explained
therewith.
