BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Which acids are present in lemon?

A1         Lucia Garcia, Worked at Hospitals Tue

Lemons are one ofthe most medicinal fruits in existence because they contain a
lot of natural organic acids, which lead to a sour taste.

The acids in lemonsare mainly citric acidand malic acid. In addition, lemons
also contain a small amount offolic acid, niacin, quinic acid, etc.

Citric acid is the mainorganic acid in lemons. 1 liter of fresh lemon juice
contains about 45 grams to50 grams of citric acid.

Citric acid is an edible acid, and moderateconsumption is beneficial and
harmless to the human body. Citricacid promotes appetite, enhances metabolism,
and has antibacterial properties.

In addition, citricacid can soften blood vessels and promote the absorption of
minerals such ascalcium and phosphorus in the body.

The content ofmalic acid in lemon is also very rich, and its sour taste is 20%
higher thanthat of citric acid.

Malic acid has theeffect of losing weight, which can break down fatand reduce
the accumulation of body fat.

However, the acid in lemons can erode tooth enamel, andeating lemons and
drinking lemon juice regularly can increase the risk of toothdecay.

Q2         What culture shocks can a South Indianface in North India?

A2         Hariharan Swaminathan, Lived in TamilNadu, India Updated Sat

This was during myfirst work related assignment to North India (Bihar to be
precise) (early2000s)

The village thatwas adopted for the project that I signed up for was almost
bordering Nepal andthere were practically no Government laid roads to reach
there. The roads to get there were madeof bricks (laid by the villagers) and
Jeeps alone were eligible to be drivenaround on those roads. Plus the roads
were back and neck breakers .They looked something like this . I was shocked at
how people were commutingeveryday on these roads. Also, the road will dip in to
a stream every one ortwo km and the jeep is likely to get stuck in the slush.
The passengers willget down to push the jeep out of trouble as if it is
nothing. This happenedever so often.

2. People were randomly clapping and I used to look atthe direction to see if I
was being called up on. Laterdid I realize it was for removing dust or coarse
particles from the pan-tobaccochew-on preparation that they were readying. And
they kept it beneath theirlower lips. The biggest“yew - yuck” moment was when
they would start talking with the paan is thatthere will be spraying while
talking. I started practicing socialdistancing that time itself :-)

3. Boarding a sleeper coach train is a nightmare and toget into an unreserved
compartment was pure hell. The berth that is “reserved” for you is not yours
until bed time (9 p m after).Until then you are expected to share. If you pick
up an argument with the person who hasoccupied your berth, first they ignore
you or will take you to task. They travel ticketless and will argue with the TTR
- “Sarkaar ka gaadi hai, ticket liya yaa nahin liya gaadi to chalega na”

4. Riding in a busis a different experience. People for whatever reason will
first like to boardatop the bus even if there are empty seats inside the
bus.Something like this . I never understood this

4. Everytime I was introduced as “yeh doctor saabaaye hain… Cheerapunji se….”
(My hometown is Pondicherry). For whatever reason Cheerapunjiwas always
confused with Pondicherry.

5. I had to embark on a vaccination project in a villagenear Motihari (near
Nepal border) for cattle. I hadprepared in anticipation of a certain sample
size (for the village alone). However, the news of vaccination spread like wild
fire and cattle fromneighbouring villages gathered as well and I did not have
sufficient doses. The villagers started to mob andthreaten me and my assistants
that our jeep will not leave the place unlesstheir cattle heads were vaccinated
as well. I had to bluff my wayout of that explosive situation. There was no
respect for educated lots.

6. Power-lines were a mere eye-piece. Theelectricity was run by village-funded
diesel generators.

7. Buses will not commute between towns after sun down. The last bus would be
about 5 30 or 6 pm. If you missedthe last bus, you get stuck in that town. The
reason being told was it wasdangerous and there will be attack. I couldn't
fathom this.

Apart from allthese “shocking” experiences, the pleasant ones were

The aloo paratha that I had was good to last the wholeday’s hunger for
breakfast-lunch-dinner . It was theyummiest and biggest I have had

The chat food itemswere more colorful and yummier than the Mumbai counterparts

The food wasawesome and the people ensured that I was always fed with good food.

Q3         What is the rural area in your countrylike?

A3         Ratnakar Sadasyula, My country India, Aug24

India is a vast anddiverse country, so the rural areas would obviously differ
from place to place. My native state Andhra Pradesh itself has different regions.

Konaseema often called the Andhra Kerala, due toit’s coconut trees, canals,
lush green paddy fields.

You also have the Lanka villages, so called as they arelocated on small
islands, surrounded by the river, youfind them mostly in Godavari, Krishna
delta region. These picturesque islandsalso have to put up with annual flooding
too unfortunately, and often have tostruggle for basic facilities.

Then you have these small villages on the coast, mostlyinhabited by fishermen,
with their quaint, sleepybeaches, boats. These villages often bear the brunt of
any cyclone that hitsthe coast, with the residents having to be evacuated.

You have villages in the tribal areas, generally surroundedby thick forests, or
in valleys, spread out aroundVizag, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Godavari
districts, now all of them have beenbought under a single district named after
Alluri Sitarama Raju.

Again most of these villages face issues with access whichresults in them
having to walk miles to fetch water oreven for basic health care like this.

Villages in Rayalaseema, are slightly different due to therather hot and dry
weather there. And these places areregularly hit by drought, forcing most to
migrate in large numbers.

But typically all these rural areas have their own set ofissues. Srikakulam
district has very high rates ofmigration for labour due to the backwardness.

Water Scarcity is another issue, with people havingto walk long distances or
depend on tankers.

Beyond all the picturesque looking scenes, sadly most ofthe rural areas have to
deal with multiple issues, access to decent health care, a farming sector that
is daily dwindling, leadingmost of them to migrate to cities and towns in
search of jobs.

following is not to be taken asmedical advice or opinion.

I drink dilutedlemon juice for hydration during our 104 degree F days in
Adelaide. The juiceis made by juicing lemons manually, so that all the fibre,
and cells of thelemon are used. This watered down to about a 1 to 6. juice to
water. This mix has no discernible effecton my blood sugar readings. In my
diabetes education from long ago Irecall a dietitian saying that having all the
fibre of the citrus fruit in thejuice helps to slow the absorption of the sugar
from the citrus fruit thusreducing the effect on blood sugar compared to juice
commercially prepared orprepared at home in a blender where the fibre is
extracted. How lemons might affect otherdiabetics would depend on many factors
as there are different types ofdiabetes, with different treatments and of
course as individualseach person can have their own individual responses to
lemons and indeed otherfoods.

Q6         What are the benefits of being a traindriver in Indian Railways?

A6         Namakkal Raghavendran,Former MechanicalEngineer at Indian Railways
(1959–1994)Aug 25

If you love the responsibility of taking 1000+ passengersor transporting tens
of thousands of freight over hundreds of miles safelyevery time you climb into
the cab, then a loco pilot’s job is for you.You have all the benefits of secure
govt. employment, with an assured careerprogression. More than anything else,
pay wise you will always be better off than your friends with
similarqualifications. It may look like a routine job, but let me tell you
thatas a loco pilot every day is an adventure. Very few jobs in the rlys are
routine except those who workin offices.

Q7         Which one is more reliable, AccorateHbA1c or fasting blood sugar?

A7         Anirban Biswas, PGDiploma inEndocrinology & Diabetes, Royal College
of Physicians (Graduated 2019)Aug25

There is no clearconsensus on which metric is more reliable for diagnosing
diabetes – fasting blood sugar or HbA1c.

However, manyexperts believe that HbA1c is a more accurate measure of long-term
glucoselevels, while fasting blood sugar may be a more accurate measure of
short-term glucoselevels.

I usuallyprefer that my patient perform regular blood sugar monitoring ( SMBG )
which can help tobring down their Hba1c levels by 1% —1.2% . Yes, that is
really amazing.

Q8         How do I reduce my sugar intake?

A8         Hunter Rose, Sales and Service Officerat HSBC Bank Mon

Tips for getting less added sugar

Use these simpletips to reduce sugar in your diet:

Remove sugar (whiteand brown), syrup, honey and molasses from the table — out
of sight, out ofmind!

Cut back on theamount of sugar added to things you eat or drink regularly like
cereal, pancakes, coffee or tea. Try cutting the usual amount of sugar you add
by halfand wean down from there, or consider using an artificial sweetener.

Buy sugar-free orlow-calorie beverages.

Buy fresh fruits orfruits canned in water or natural juice. Avoid fruit canned
in syrup,especially heavy syrup.

Instead of addingsugar to cereal or oatmeal, add fresh fruit (try bananas,
cherries orstrawberries) or dried fruit (raisins, cranberries or apricots).

When bakingcookies, brownies or cakes, cut the sugar called for in your recipe
byone-third to one-half. Often you won’t notice the difference.

Instead of addingsugar in recipes, use extracts such as almond, vanilla, orange
or lemon.

Enhance foods withspices instead of sugar; try ginger, allspice, cinnamon or
nutmeg.

Substituteunsweetened applesauce for sugar in recipes (use equal amounts).

Try zero-caloriesweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose or saccharin in
moderation.

Q9         How are trains parked?

A9         Subhasis Dutta Roy,Working in IndianRailways at Indian Railways
(2001–present)Updated 2y

After arrival at the destination, the driving locomotiveis detached from the
train. A separate Loco called Shunting Loco (mainly diesel loco)is attached at
the other end with empty rake of train. Then shunting loco haulsthe rake to the
rail yard. Here, all sorts of maintanance works arecarried out by separate
departments. Here, the rake stays till the time it has to go back tothe station
(for passengers to board) for its return/onward journey. Here is a picture of a
railway yard with empty train rakes.

My note- Inthe yard it is ensured all doors and windows are closed after
cleaning/or whiletaking to the yard. This avoid mouses, snakes etc entering the
rakes.

Q10              As a South Indian, what did yousee in North India that
confused you but also amused you at the same time?

A10       Arjun K Vijayakumar, Vegetarian sincebirth Aug 16

Here I was enteringa Kannadiga restaurant (outside of South India) to eat Dosa,
breaking theroutine of eating rotis. And I ordered a Mysore Masala Dosa.
Icouldn't wait to have it as I was starving. The waiter brought the Dosa
andplaced a pair of fork & spoon on the it

Anybody from SouthIndia would be confused by this gesture. I politely smiled
and thanked thewaiter. After setting aside the useless cutleries, I started
digging into theDosa with my clean hands washed with soap moments ago. Ah! The
heaven it was.How long was I deprived of a good Dosa!

After awholesome Dosa meal, I looked around to see the other lovely folks at
therestaurant struggling to eat dosa with fork & spoon.Nothingshort of amusing!
