I wish a happyonam to all my friends home Kerala. Tomorrow is Onam. Gopalakrishnan 7-9-2022 Q1 When should a kitchen be replaced? A1 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now Replacing kitchenfor what purpose?. I have seen in many flats if possible kitchen is changed to another location assuggested by vasthu experts and kitchen modified to a room. Modifications inkitchen are done according to life style changes like kitchen table changing togranite, fitting floor level type new stoves, changing wash basins, fitting newtype chimney, changing interiors etc. These are modifications. Addition like ROSsystem, installation of dish washers etc are also done. Hope this answerreplies your query Q2 South Indians bathe their babies bylaying them on the legs. I really like this procedure. Can anyone list theadvantages of such a bathing procedure? A2 Bhuvana Rameshwar, Born and bred a S.Indian 3y This is done by allSouth Indian grandmothers, some mothers and our maids /baby helps to give thebabies a bath. We have this peculiar way of extending our legs straight andsitting down. We touch our toes but slightly leave a gap between our ankles. The baby is made to lie downwith its head near our ankle. The luke warm water is poured gentlyand baby is bathed. Then the baby is turned facing the roof and again bathedcarefully seeing that no water enters the nose, mouth or eyes. This type of full body and hair-head bath is given oncein two days. The child isusually massaged with coconut or sesame oil, before bath to strengthen the bodymuscles. So this lyingdown way of bathing makes sure the baby is in a stable position.Otherwise the scared, crying and angry infant may slip on to the floor and gethurt. The oil makes them too slippery to hold. Thebabies neck is still tender and not strong enough to hold thehead. So the lying down position doesn't harm the neck. The skullis not fully formed and the bones take eighteen months tocover up and join the upper soft spot or anterior fontanelle. So pouring wateron it is not good for the head and the brain even though it is covered by thickskin. Oil massage is done to cool the body in hot Indianweather, to moisturise the growing skin and child is exposed for some time towarm sunlight to get Vitamin D. The water pouring on the body, hair and headduring bathing does not suffocate the baby as it breathes in the gap betweenour ankle - feet. The head is massaged to a round shape duringbathing by our hands also by the force of the water. Sometimes it is tappedsoftly into shape. This lying downposition massages the full body and removes any gas in the baby's abdomen whichcauses colic pain. Pouring lots of slightly hotter water is in itself a goodbody massage and the child sleeps well after dressing and drinking milk.Usually they sleep longer on bathing days. On the whole it isgood for the growing baby. My note- Some use bathing plank, keeping legs on either side of plank and procedure is same as told Q3 Which is the most luxurious railwaystation in India? A3 Anjali Bhagoria, Exploring myself Thu Rani Kamlapati aka Habibganjis the most luxurious station in India. It is india's first world class privatized railwaystation which is present in Bhopal and comes under west central railway. The station hasbeen designed and built with the ultra-modern amenities like large covered parking area, 24X7 power backup, drinking water,air-conditioned lobby, offices, shops, high speed escalator, lift, anchorstores, automobile showrooms, convention centre, hotels, super specialtyhospital, etc. to provide passengers the airport-like feel & comfort at thesame time. Attaching some ofthe pictures here:….. There arefacilities like spa, offices, meeting rooms, conference halls, brand shops, cafes, multicuisine restaurant as well. Overall this changeis awesome. And still it is under development. My note- If one look Chennai central platform 1 , itappears with breakage of cementedplatform done before decades. Though current booking and general booking areas have been newly constructed before it,platform is still neglected. Q4 Does opening the windows on your carincrease drag and therefore decrease fuel economy? Should you try to keep yourwindows closed? A4 Steve Baker, Senior Software Engineer(2013–present)Aug 25 Yes - it adds considerable drag - but mostly at higherspeeds. The classicquestion is whether it’s better to open the windows than to run the A/C. It turns out that opening the window is only moreefficient at very slow speeds…maybe 30mph and below. But for sure, opening the windows has a measurable negativeeffect on fuel economy. Q5 How do trains not slip when it's rainingor when going uphill? A5 Siva Kumar Bachoti, Former SoftwareQuality Assurance Manager Mon An average trainlocomotive weighs around 200 tons while an average passenger coach weighs 40tons. Let is take the smaller weight for our computation. 40 tons is 88,000pounds, that is the weight of a typical passenger coach. Note, a locomotive canweigh 5 times that number! A coach has 8 wheels. Now, what is the contact area of a wheel? About 0.4 squareinch. Since the weight ofthe coach can be assumed to be uniformly distributed, what is the PSI exertedby each wheel, on the track? The answer is 27,500 PSI, a terrific pressure more thanenough to hold the coach hugged to the track. In fact, but forthe very smooth bearings, the coach dragging on the track should wear away bothpretty soon! Q6 What happens if you eat too muchgarlic? A6 Aye Shy,MBBS in Cardiology &Surgery, King Edward Medical University (Graduated 2021)Fri Too Much Garlic:The Risks and Consequences Garlic isprized for its many health benefits, from lowering cholesterol tofighting off the common cold. Some of theseside effects includemood swings, numbness or tingling sensations in the hands or feet, weakness orsoreness in the limbs, and agitation. These symptoms are usuallytemporary, but it can sometimes be a symptom of an allergic reaction to allicinwhich causes gastrointestinal irritation (resulting in diarrhea) among otherreactions. 3)Skin problems People who consumelarge amounts of garlic on a regular basis are at risk for developing problemswith their skin. Excessiveconsumption of garlic can cause contact dermatitis, which is irritation causedby the substance coming into contact with the skin. 4)Long-term effects Garlic can act as a blood thinner.Studies show that people who eat a clove of garlic every day for one month haveincreased clotting in their blood, which can lead to the formation of bloodclots in the vessels. In addition, those who eat more than two cloves of garlicat a time may experience digestive problems due to its high fiber content, suchas diarrhea. 5)Eye damage It is a well-knownfact that too much garlic can cause bad breath. Eating a clove or two of rawgarlic, while unpleasant, doesn't have serious side effects. A7 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now I have installedthe smallest split AC of 0.75 ton in my office room, available in Chennai since the room is about 8′x7′. It was in 2008. At thattime it cost around 16000–00 rupees. It functions till this date and ingood condition. Nowair-conditioner units are more cheaper. I mean for thesame price it is possible to get the same type after 15 years also. Q8 I have my own RCC house but due toheavy rain water coming from the wall, I don't know what to do. What should Ido? I am thinking about selling my house. A8 Akshay Garg,B. Arch in Architecture,The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (Graduated 1991)Aug 31 Hi TusharDeshpande! Thanks for asking. You have indicated that yourhouse is in RCC and the water due to heavy rains are seeping through walls. But what you have not specified is whether the frame structure is in RCC withbrick walls or the entire system is in RCC. I believe that the walls are in bricks or block work andthe structure is RCC frame. If this assumption is correctthen you need to plaster the outside wall with cement mortar plaster made up ofcourse sand and fine sand in 50–50 ratio. You can add the water proofing compound as well with themortar. If the second caseis correct i.e., the construction is done in RCC completely (most probably withMivan shuttering) then the best is you can do injection grouting in RCC walls, where holes will becreated at 900mm interval and cement slurry with water proofing compound can beinjected till the bleeding happens. Post this you can re-plaster the surfacefor better looks. Trust this helps. My note- I have read else where good RCC musthave small leaks. In Tamilnadu after RCCroof dried broken bricks made to smallpieces are laid and bricks powder laidover it and water poured. Leaky points are strengthened and tiles spread. But in Kerala no such procedures. Now no leak compound is applied over RCC roof/ tinsheet roofing is done so that it can beused for other purposes also. But if flood comes rescuing is difficult because of theroofing and in many homes nrar floodingareas now it is removed. Q9 What simple electrical issues can I fixat home?
