CULTURAL QA 09-2022-24

BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            Cana vegetarian foreign student remain vegetarian comfortably? Or
should he starteating “non-veg”?

A1            Balaji Viswanathan, CEO at Invento(2016–present)13h

It is perfectly possible to be a vegetarian anywhere in theworld. You just need
to have a few tips & tricks.I do my Puja where ever I travel in the world and
adhere to strict dharmicnorms.

General ones for short trips:

Carry some rice and small electric rice cookeralong with dried papadand 1
pickle. Vegetables are available anywhere in the world. Youcan cook at your
hotel/Airbnb room.

If it is a relatively short trip — you can even packyogurt and a few
perishables.

You can packbreakfast cereal and get milk/milk alternatives (Almond milk) to
eat it withit. You can also pack bread and instant noodles.

Try to get places with a kitchen access — manyEuropean hostels, Airbnb homes
and extended stay hotels have these. Cooking yourself is the bestoption.

In case of meetings:

In China, you can always convey the Vegetarianstrict preference. They
understand that. I used to often visit there forbusiness meetings and found
ways to get proper food. You can say something like“Wo bu chi ro; Wo chisu cai”
[I don’t eat meat. I eat vegetables]. Most restaurants wouldbe able to
accommodate that. However, in local flights within China it is near impossible
to getvegetarian food — even bread would have pork stuffing inside. Fastduring
those few hours if you didn’t carry anything to eat.

In the US and Western world, most restaurants havevegetarian options. You can
again plan this ahead ifyou are going to be in a business meeting. People
understand dietaryrestrictions well.

In the Islamic world, Japan, Thailand, Eastern Europe andSouth America it can
sometimes be harder to convey that you are a vegetarian.Again check with your
hosts before the meeting if they have the option.

Often times in Muslim countries they have arrangedvegetarian options for me. In
Japan, you can claim you are a Buddhist andthey understand the dietary
restrictions. That doesn’t work as wellin Thailand — as they don’t see their
fish based sauces as meat or violatingBuddhist principles. InEastern Europe,
you would easily find bread and cheese.

My note- Thereare vegetarian restaurants even in Soudi Arabia andUAE. There are
many knowing English,Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada etc. Hindi also is a
common language.

Q2            Whydon't the United States and Britain have high-speed rail lines?

A2            James Flack, Lived in England,Scotland and France Aug 14

The UK does have one high speed line; London to theChannel tunnel. A second is
under construction.

The UK doesn’t havemore is because of two main factors.

Firstly, when Highspeed lines came into fashion again in the second half of the
20th century, UKrailways were state owned and suffered from chronic
underinvestment fordecades. Then when the unions went mad, the prospect of
pouring money into aheavily unionsed industry became even less likely,
especially for Thatcher.

High speed either needs new lines, or old ones heavilyupgraded and improved.

Secondly, geography. High speedlines have to run at high speeds to be
worthwhile- so they must have limitedstops. Given how densely populated the UK
is, it is pointless using HS betweenclose cities, as it does’t have time to get
up to speed. There are limitednumbers of routes it does make sense for in the UK

For me, Highspeed rail is a mistake for the UK. It spends too much money
onsmall areas, whe improving the whole network would be a better idea. There
are quite a few linesbuilt properly in the Victorian era, that could be run at
far higher speedsthan now, if some signaling and other minor issues were sorted.

Make the trainsnicer to be on, and reliable, and people mainly won’t care the
journey is 10minutes longer than if it had been a high speed train

Q3            Whathappens to old bottles of milk?

A3            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

In India milk comesnow  in pouches. Milk in bottle is a thing ofpast. Most of
the medicines, disinfect items came in bottle has nowstarted to appear in
plastic bottles. Very few things comes in bottles. Scrap merchants collectthem
again to prepare new bottles.

Q4            Besidesthe colors of leaves and blueberries, why is there no such
thing as greenflowers and blue vegetables?

A4            Well, my good fellow, apparently you just didn’t look very hard
before jumping to yourconclusion.

There are blue potatoes, blue corn, blue cabbage, bluebeans, blue peppers, blue
mushrooms, and blue carrots. Some of these, in their“wild type” form, were
naturally blue until selective breeding produced theother colors now more
common at the grocer, suchas orange carrots.

Not being a gardener or floriculturist, the first greenflowers that came to my
mind were those of the tulip trees around my property:

But if it’s greenflowers you want (and you want more than the tiny flowers of
grasses and thelike), here’s a list of 21 more:… NOT ADDED HERE.

Q6            Whatare some interesting facts about tigers?

A6            Dhileeban Ramasamy, i believe infacts and figures.7y

Tigers scratchtrees and use their urine to mark their territories. Their urine
smellsstrongly of buttered popcorn.

Edit : Tigersscratch trees at the highest possible point so that when another
tiger comes hecan see the mark & it can guess the size of the tiger. If he can
scratch higher than that then he will enter the territory & fightor else he
will not dare to take on a tiger much larger than him. Thank youamar damani for
the info.

The stripes on each tiger are unique, like humanfingerprints

Just likehousecats, the markings on a tiger’s fur are also found on their
skin,so even a shaved tiger would still show its stripes

Tigers haveantiseptic saliva. They lick their wounds to disinfect them

A group of tigers is called an ambush or a streak.

Tigers canleap distances of over 6m, and jump up to 5m vertically.

Tigers haveeyes that are the brightest of any other animal in the world. At
dusk, or in thebeam of a torch, they blaze back the ambient light with awesome
intensity

They often carrythe Chinese mark of Wang or King the forehead

Tigers have spikedpenises Ouch. Just writing that sentence made me
uncomfortable! Tigers areunable to become erect when aroused. Instead, males
penises have a bone locatedinside (called a baculum) and are covered with
barbs. Those prickly spikes aidin “keeping the connection” between the male and
female duringcopulation.(sorry no pictures)

Q7            Ifthe water in the oceans receded, could we walk from one
continent to another?

A7            Pure Concern,Answered by ScottParikh Updated Sep 12

There areapproximately 1375 million cubic km of water on the planet. The amount
of waterpresent is enormous. Soif we remove that much water, the Earth is a
gigantic desert, and the journeyfrom Europe to North America would be a very,
very long journey.

Actually no. You'reunlikely to be able to cover that distance, even if you have
a caravan ofprovisions. Themid-Atlantic ridge would be a challenge to be
overcome. So unlessyou were an experienced climber and could avoid places where
lava would turn you to ash,you probably wouldn't have made the trip a success.

Q8            Whatare some foods that you remember tasting better when you were
a child?

A8            Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniam,Lawyer Aug28

Nagarajan SrinivasSirs recent post on Triplicane has brought back many fond
memories

Shanti Vihar - in Luz - I rememer they served theTastiest Sambar with Small
Onions i have ever eaten. After all theseyears only Annapoorna in Coimbatore
and Jyoti Vihar in Kolkata produces acomparable Sambar. Even Sangeetha and
Saravana Bhavan cannot match thattaste of Sambar

Next is of course Onion Bajji

Triplicane Ratna Cafe served the tastiest bajjis made ofOnion. Nowadays whether
the oil is different or theflour is different - the Bajjis simply dont have the
same taste.

Then Samosas

Bombay Halwa House had the tastiest samosas. There was another place called
Ramakrishna. Today i dont find any tasty Samosasanywhere. They are either too
huge or the filling is too generic. Mouchak inGoriahat is the only place whose
Shingara is comparable in taste.

Then Jangri

I have eaten the best Jangris from Grand Sweets in Adayar. However now the Taste
is gone. Its Generic and the old taste is ruined. TheSweet Shop has become a
Chain and the Quality has suffered.

My note- I cannotforget the tasty coconut chutni and smooth finished iddali
from Ratnacafe in Triplicaneand SriRambhavan inThambuchetty street when I came
to Chennai in 1964. They served chatni andsambar only in one round.

Udupi home in Egmore supplied bestvegetarian Kerala/Tamilnadu style in Plantain
leaf. Vijaya hotel at Park town the best Andhravegetarian food served in
plantain leaf with dhalpowder, ghee and avaikka mangopickle .

Q9            Whydoes North India have no big metro city development aside from
Delhi ascompared to South India?

A9            Goutham R,Lives in Bengaluru,Karnataka, India2y

I feel there is absence of strong and healthy competitionamong North Indian
states.

North Indian statesof UP, Bihar, MP, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, etc doesn’t show
that aggressivenessto attract investors in their respective states. This is the
same trendirrespective of the ruling parties.

It is different in south, here states fight to attractinvestors. People and
media (print media, TV and socialmedia) will start questioning state govt as to
why they failed to attract a particularcompany. Suppose a big giant invests in
Hyderabad, people in Karnataka, TN, MHwill question their respective state
govts as to why that company did notinvest in Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune
respectively.

Even the metro railconstruction is monitored closely, people and media will
compare it’s progressin other states and question their govt.

Our cinemaindustries are also competing with each other always, they always
want toportray their cinema is the best. North Indian film industries lacks
thiscompetition.

Regionalism alsohelps in growth which is strong in south and Maharashtra and
not visible inNorth. Regionalism is not bad, it actually fuels growth.

I remember thehealthy fight between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh when SM
Krishna andChandababu Naidu were CMs. They used to do everything possible to
attract ITgiants to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

Such attitude is missing in North Indian states, that’sthe reason for state
govts to be so lethargic. Without industries cities won’tgrow, without growth,
metro cities are not possible.

This is my personalopinion, correct me if I am wrong or missing anything.

Q10         Weremedieval kings treated like celebrities? Did they get swarmed
by people wantingto meet them?

A10          Ernest W. Adams, School taught me tohate history, but now I love
it. Updated Wed

Yes, although they didn’t getswarmed by peasants. Peasantswould not be allowed
close by the king’s guard. But people wouldline the roads as the king came into
town, and bow and take off their hats ashe went by. Kings dressedin especially
fine clothes on these occasions because it was expected of them.Other nobles
also did so in imitation of the king.

Anybody who needed something done by the government, or whowanted a job, tried
to get into the king’s court. These rooms were crowded withnobles trying to get
his attention. The higher yourstanding, the more likely you were to be
successful. It was imperative that youmake good contacts with people above you.
Bribery was a way of life.

Mynote- There are certain animal qualities with all homosapinens any where in
theword, being civilized, they are suppressed to certain extent.
