BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1            If a copper water bottle has turnedgreen inside, can you still
drink out of it?

A1            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

The green spots formation is copper oxide. Pure copperacting with oxygen from
atmosphere. This is natural. You have to clean the green spots and full bottle.
In cleaning tamarind use may help easily removingthe green spots. If you daily
wash the bottle oxidation will be veryless.

Water should bedrank from water bottles well cleaned and not havingeven
slightest oxidation.

Q2            Which hijack had the most unusualend?

A2            Samir, Keen interest in politics Wed

An Indian Airlinesflight from Kolkata toLucknow was hijacked by two people
named Bholanath Pandey andDevendra Pandey in 1978. There were 132 passengers on
board.

They demanded the release of the former Prime Minister ofIndia, Indira Gandhi
who was in jail after the emergency.Furthermore they wanted all the criminal
cases against Indira Gandhi and herson Sanjay Gandhi to be withdrawn.

They used fake kid toys as guns to take over the plane. The hijackers did not
allow the passenger to use the toilet facilities. The former law minister AK Sen
was also among the passengers and he got sofrustrated that he shouted, "shoot
me if youlike, but I am going to the toilet".

They forced the pilot to land the plane in Varanasi.Hours later, the father of
one of the hijackers spoke with them throughwireless and talked some sense into
them. Finally they agreed to surrender.

They wereconstantly chanting Pro Indira Gandhi slogans while coming out of the
airport.

The mostunbelievable part of this incident is that they were given tickets from
theCongress party to contest in the 1980 state assembly elections and they
wontoo.

Q3            We're taught that we breathe in O2,and we breathe out CO2, but
how exactly do the lungs make sure only oxygen comes in, and CO2 goes out?
Justthe inhaling and exhaling won't do any filtration of gases, both will come
inand go out.

A3            Ken Saladin, Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)Wed

They don’t; theycan’t.You inhale oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. You
alsoexhale oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. The air you inhale is about21%
oxygen and 0.04% CO2. Theair you exhale is about 14% oxygen and 5% CO2.

My note- Animportant fact explained in simple lines.

Q4            Why do we eat fruits raw but cookthe vegetables?

A4            Lucia Garcia, Worked at Hospitals11h

Fruits andvegetables are different parts of plants. Fruits are the seeds of
plants, whilevegetables are the roots, stems and leaves of plants.

Taste and TextureAre Important. Fruitsare sweet and delicious, while most
vegetables don't taste very good in theirraw form.

We cookvegetables so they taste better, however, cooking reduces the nutrient
levelsof most vegetables.

Studies showthat half an hour of cooking can cause a loss of 40 to 50 percent
ofwater-soluble vitamins(suchas vitamins C and B) and 10 to 20 percent of
water-soluble vitamins (such asvitamins A, E, and D).

Raw fruits andvegetables provide more nutrients than cooked vegetables.

Vegetables that can be eaten raw are best eaten raw, andvegetables that cannot
be eaten raw should not be overcooked to minimize theloss of nutrients.

However, somevegetables are rich in nutrients such as carotene, lutein,
lycopene, ferulicacid and so on, these nutrient are present in plant cells and
need to be cookedto destroy the cell walls to release these nutrients for
absorption by thebody.

Vegetables to cookinclude carrots, asparagus, tomatoes, kale, spinach, bell
peppers, brassica, green beans, mushrooms, celery, potato and so on.

My note- For salads we do not cook vegetables likecarrot. Ginger not cooked
tastes better. Tendercucumber is not cooked. In fact if one has tried, bitter
gourd has lessbitterness if half cooked. Probably the only fruit cooked and
tasty isripen banana.

Q5            What makes the United States ofAmerica unique?

A5            Balaji Viswanathan, Lived in USsince 2004.Sep 19

There are 2 uniquecharacteristics of US that shapes a lot of politics and
economy. It is one of the mostunder-populated countries given its climate &
resources. It isone of the most rebellious of societies.

Among the countriesof the world, US is one that could take the most number of
people. The 4 key resources to sustainpopulation — a) habitable land, b) water,
c) soil & food and d) energy — isabundant in the US. Canada doesn’t have soil,
Australia doesn’t havewater, Russia doesn’t have enough of habitable land and
China doesn’t haveenough of land.

People could live in nearly every part of the US[unlike the case in Canada,
Russia or Australia]. But for its size andresources it is extremely low
populated with a density of about 30people/sq km.

While Canada andAustralia have a lower population density, their habitable
lands are fewermaking the population clustered in a few areas. US is extremely
spread out. Unimaginablyspread out. That would answer a variety of questions
such as “why there is noviable passenger rail system unlike in country X”

The people whomoved into the US pre-1965, especially in the 1800s were
iconoclasts and rebelswith extreme distrust of government & elites. The
Puritans and many otherinfluential groups that moved to the US, tried to escape
the liberal wave inEurope.

While the reformspost 1965 enabled a more diverse migration especially with a
group that has nodistrust of governments or elites, this newer group doesn’t
have as muchinfluence on the government and culture.

The people whomoved earlier brought in their rebellious nature and given the #1
(abundantarea), they could settle in places far off and prevent assimilation
into thebroader culture. They have far bigger numbers and far longer experience
holdingoff.

This is whygun control is hard in US, but not so hard in Australia. In Aus,
they usedto have free ownership of guns until the government asked them to give
up. Thefrontier people were far fewer to develop as influential a political
culture asthe US. Thus, they had to give up their guns. Not in the US.

Not just attitudes on guns. But, also attitudes onsingle-payer healthcare,
abortion legalising all stemfrom the different characteristics of this frontier
mind set.

The 2 qualitiesmake US very different from say Canada or Australia [other large
countriessettled by the Europeans]; or Latin America, Africa and Asia [other
partscolonised by Europeans] and Europe itself.

Q6            What are some ways to boost lowenergy levels caused by sugar in
the blood?

A6            Emily Parsons, Lives in Pasadena, CA(2014–present)5h

Timely medicationintake    Take in a lot ofwater.

Get enoughrest.    Avoid drinking too much alcohol

Make sure you moveevery day in some way.    Consume protein, fibre, and fat at
each meal.

Avoid eatingcarbohydrates on their own.    Avoidskipping meals. These are some
ways to boost low energy levels caused by sugarin the blood

My note- Depend onthe years one is diabetic, food consumption becomes very low
as years increase.

Q7            Why don't Indians start changingtheir cooking style and start
using induction stoves that run on electricityinstead of the less efficient LPG
stoves that run on gas that is costing morethan Rs.1000 per cylinder?

A7            Anbazhagan Ambrose, Self certifiedchef Sep 10

Thanks for the A2ASankar. A very good question.

You are right. Induction stoves have efficiency rates of75% and upwards
compared to 30–40% efficiency rate ofgas burners. If you run calculations,
induction cooking will prove to becheaper. Or may be not :)

Issues we have with induction cooking:

Induction cookingwill be nice if our average power outage is no more than 15
minutes in a YEAR.Obviously we are not at that stage. Being dependent on
erratic power cuts isnot good for cooking.

You need upfront investments in changing your vessels toinduction-friendly ones.

You need to change your cooking style to quicker cookingcompared to gas stove.
This change is not that easy.

Induction cooking is cheaper than gas. Providedyou are in the right slab. I am
in 800–1000 units slab, so the costs are samefor me. I do not have to deal with
hassles of power cuts.

Good, multi hob induction tops are still notavailable in India.

My note- Aboveall, if all families start cooking using electric power,
ourcountry cannot produce  to meet that muchelectric power even in another one
decade. Already moststates are having power shortage in India.

Q8            Is it necessary to turn off the airconditioner when leaving home
for a short period of time?

A8            Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

I am answering fromChennai, India. Chennai experiences very hot atmosphere now
also. After goingout for some work in auto/car for 1–2 hours, when comeback
most require somecool drinks and cool room to relax. I keep my room AC switched
ON if I could return with in 2hours. If time exceeds much more I ask my wife to
switch OFF my roomAC.

Most in thenight switch ON AC about half an hour earlier before going to bed.

If all members aregoing out, it is preferred to switch OFF the air conditioner
for safety.

Q9            Why does the brain erase memoriesfrom before age 3? What did you
see when you were a kid?

A9            Steven Haddock, Studied at YorkUniversity (Canada)Wed

It doesn’t. Itseems those memories didn’t form in the first place.

We still don’tknow a lot about the brain, but it appears that shortterm
memories are stored by electrical impulses that can be maintained forhours, but
that long term memories are stored by actual physical changes in thebrain that
happen when you sleep. Learning is treated totally differently bythe brain and
brain damaged people who can’t form memories can still learnthings. So is
recognition - you can totally forget someoneor something and still recognize it
years later.

So it seems thegrowing brain doesn’t get to the point where it actually starts
growing in away that can storememories over the long term until you’re about
four years old, andyour brain can lose the ability to store long-term memories
if you’revery old. Different mechanisms, but the same underlying fault.

So, take a phonenumber. If you just need it once, your brain keeps it as an
electrical impulseuntil it’s finished using it, then it forgets it forever.
However, if you use it over andover again, eventually your brain locks it in so
30 years after you leave homeyou can still remember your home phone number.
It’s not entirelycertain why some memories become long term, but constant use
appears to be afactor.

Q10         Whydo couples living in Bangalore struggle financially even after
earning in lakhsper month?

A10          Nithya, Love, Light, Life Updated Sep17

Well I started living in Bangalore, 24 years ago. As aCampus Recruit with TCS,
I was earning Rs 7,800 per month then. For about 1 1/2 years that was my salary,
which later got enhanced by 1K, to Rs8,800 p.m. Right at the beginning of my
career, my father used to advise me repeatedly to start savingmoney, by cutting
off unnecessary expenses. After deducting rent, transportation, food and other
expenses, I was able to save about 2000 rupees permonth, from the first year
itself.

That habit soonbecame ingrained in me and today, 24 years later, I am earning
24times that initial salary. I know I can retire from work anytime without
fears, and that I have the savings to last me and my family in any
eventuality.Over the years I have voluntarily taken job breaks multiple times,
went toplaces that I only dreamt of in my childhood, and enjoyed life.

So there is the answer for you - Those people don’tknow/haven’t practised
saving money from the beginning of their career!

Why is this SOOIMPORTANT?

Let me walk youthrough some data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, USA.

At age 50:

-75% of thepopulation has less than $5,000 in the bank for retirement.

At age 65:

-45% of Americansdepend on relatives.

-30% depend oncharities.

-23% are stillworking (most can’t afford to quit and work until they are no
longer physicallycapable).

-Only 2% are self-sustaining.

CURRENTLY...-It isimpossible to support a family of two working full time at
minimum wage.

-For the first timein history, the current generation is averaging a lower
standard of living thentheir parents.

The Bureau of LaborStatistics also states:

Out of 100 people that start working at the age of 25, bythe age of 65:

-1 is wealthy.-4 have enoughmoney to retire.-63 depend on social security or
charity.-29 are deceased.
