CULTURAL QA 10-2022-10

BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1           What are the dangers of touching ahigh tension wire?

A1           John Adamson, Retired(2014–present)27m

They carry veryhigh voltage. Funnily enough as long as youare not touching
anything at a different potential it’s quite safe.Birds sit on them quite
Happily.

Q2           How is barbed wire dangerous?

A2           Loring Chien, Former PrincipalEngineer at Fortune 1000 Company
(2002–2016)5y

It has sharp pointson it. Every few inches. If you come in contact with it, it
is painful and willlikely break your skin or puncture it. That causes cuts,
bleeding and possibly infection as the steelused is often rusty and not sterile.

Unless you are thedensest person on earth, You learn quickly to avoid it.

My note- Above the compound wall Iron bars areerected except in the front in
most homes. Recently partially in the frontalso. This avoid  some street
dogsjumping and creating menace. Also creeping plants like betel, bitter
gourd, money plant also are spread on it. Even with best quality barbed wire,
rustinghappens, and periodically replaced. However the bars erected  to put
through fencing wire are painted.

Q3           Is a neutral wire more dangerous thana hot wire?

A3           Josephine Hollivan, Electrician(2014–present)1y

The neutral wire is intended to carry current. Anycurrent-carrying conductor
can be dangerous. Electricity is dangerous becauseit is most often an invisible
hazard.

I suppose it couldbe “more” dangerous because you aren’t typically expecting a
neutral to haveactive current on it, and may discount its ability to push
current through yourbody.

Q4           Which is the best berth to choose inthe 2A class on Indian trains?

A4           Raunaq J,A Keen Observer Oct 4

While travellingalone, I think that theside lower birth of 2AC Coach is the
best.

You can easily setyour luggage below and rest/sleep on the berth and set the
curtains-Fullprivacy and 0 disturbance. You also get a big window all for
yourself to ponderoutside and enjoy and look at the stations, and obviously you
get a chargingsocket and reading light.

The seat dimension is maybe to similar to 3AC but it iscomfortable unless
you’re too tall or fat. I’m 5′11and never had any issues there. Of course, the
main 4 berths are bigger than3AC and more comfortable than the side berths, but
I would still opt for thiswhen I’m travelling alone, as the pros outweigh the
con.

Q5           How did humans get luckyevolution-wise in that we are able to
think better than other animals?

A5           Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper20h

A combination of factors.

First off, apeshave a head start on becoming bipeds with upright bodies (rather
thanhorizontal bodies, like most other bipeds), because apes brachiate - that
is,swing underneath branches using their arms - so they were already adapted
tohaving a vertically-aligned torso and gripping hands.

So, about seven million years a go, a nearby supernovaled to an increase in
electrical storms, which burned off alot of brushland in Africa and allowed a
savannah-type ecosystem to expand. A group of semi-bipedal apessplit in two,
with one group moving out onto the plains, while the other moveddeeper into the
jungle.

The jungle groupevolved to be more quadrupedal because that helped them to get
around in dense cover, and became the ancestors ofchimps and bonobos.

The plains groupevolved to be more bipedal, because that enabled them to see
over the tallgrasses of the savannah, and spot predators and prey from a long
distance. Becoming more bipedal freed up theirhands, which no longer had to
double as walking feet, and their shoulders, which could now adapt for throwing.

With these freer, more nimble hands theystarted to make better tools. They were
probably already able tomake very simple wooden and stone tools, because chimps
do so, but now theycould begin to shape blades and tie them to a shaft, and
devise complex huntingstrategies to use them.

Large brains are a two-edged sword because they take a lot of power torun, and
in placental mammals they make childbirth more difficult and dangerous. But with
dexterous hands and mobile shoulders, it became an advantage to bemore
intelligent in order to make better tools, and then with better tools
theybecame better hunters. Withmore access to meat and fat they had more energy
to maintain ever biggerbrains, especially once they learned how to use fire to
cook, sothat set up a positive feedback loop which enabled them to get more and
moreintelligent, until theyhit the upper limit of how big-headed human infants
could get without eitherkilling the mother, or the mother having to have such a
wide pelvis she couldbarely walk, or the infant being born so small and/or
premature it couldn’tsurvive.

MY note- A lengthyanswer by Mrs Clara. Often she writes short answers.

Q6           I have eaten 30 grams of fiber today, but I am unable to have a
good bowel movement. Why is this?

A6           Victoria Arlington, Studied Nursing(BSRN) at San Francisco State
University (SFSU)Thu

There are severalreasons why people have trouble with bowel movements. Fiber
helps, but really thebigger thing is how much water do you drink in a day? Or
things that are closeto water like tea.

The average amountpeople need to get down in a day is 8- 8oz. cups. At least.

After water, and fiber, comes exercise. You need to move around each day,
walking or something to help bowel movements.

Finally, whileyou are eating fiber, DON’T eat things that tend to constipate
you.

Eating a lot of high-fat meats, dairy products and eggs,or rich desserts and
sugary sweets may cause constipation.

My note- Inspiteof having fibre rich food, drinking water, certain medication
createsconstipation.

Q7           What are the holes in concrete?

A7           Qamar Hayat, Tue

Surface voids arethe cavities or little holes that appear on the surface of
concrete castings. Surface voids (commonly known aspitting) are referred to as
“bug holes” or “fish eyes”. These voidsmay produce an unacceptable appearance
on the surface of the finished casting.Understanding the causes of surface
voids and what can be done to minimize themis the first step to amore efficient
and productive casting operation.

Surface voids aregenerally attributed to the following three factors:

Releaseagent, Water,  Air – sometimes acombination of the three

Factors causingsurface voids

Releasing Agent

Release agents actas a “lubricant” between the mold and the concrete. The
proper application of arelease agent will yield castings without surface voids.
When a release agentis over applied, it may “pool” or “puddle” on the lower
extremities of the moldand when concrete is poured these pools prevent the
concrete from filling in100%.

Water

Similar to releaseagents, water is also trapped against the mold’s working
surface resulting invoids. As the concrete cures and the residual water
evaporates, a cavity isleft behind on the surface of the casting. However most
voids caused by water are a result of ahigh water to cement ratio.

AIR

In mostcircumstances, air voids have an irregular shape and tend to be much
larger(1/2″ or 1.27 cm.) than those caused by water or release agents. The air
voids are caused byair trapped between the mold surface and the concrete.
Theygenerally appear in low slump concrete and can be found underneath
irregular(non-spherical) shaped pieces of crushed aggregate.

This is aresult of having too little mortar to fill the spaces around the
aggregate.

How To Eliminate Voids In A Concrete Casting:

While manyvariables must be considered in the elimination of surface voids in
concretecastings, there are a number of precautions that can remedy this
unsightlyproblem.

1.Make sure that releasing agents are applied in thinfilms.

2.Techniques usedduring compaction can eliminate most surface voids.

i) Suitable size of needle virator should be used

ii) Concrete shouldbe compacted layer by layer

iii) Needle shouldnot touch reinforcement and formwork

3. Tapping the mold with rubber hammer / wooden hammercan eliminate any
residual voids.

Q8           Howcan water damage be prevented on a washing machine?

A8           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

A spindle is available in Chennai, Tamilnadu market whichhas metal ends with
holes on either sides. One end isconnected to machine and another to water
inlet. When purchased and connected it’s colour is white. While absorbing
impurities, it’s colour gradually changes to brown. This spindle cost 2000–00
rupeesin Chennai. It’s life span is about 2 years.

I have connectedone about 4 months back to my automatic washing machine. How
that small spindle works (technically) for TWO years is not clearto me.

Such spindlelarger in size was fitted to a stainless steel water container in
the centreand provided with a tap was earliest water purifiers in Tamilnadu
during1981’s

Q9           Is it necessary to keep our watertanks full of water?

A9           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

In the early yearsof construction of home, fillingfull tank can indicate
leakage if any and prove the water holding capacity without any damage to walls.

Later period, itis mental satisfaction, confidence , the family has full tank
of water inreserve.

Further dustand clay from bore wells will settle at bottom, full tank water
will keep themdown below the outlet to certain extent.

Q10         What is the benefit of booking a roomwith a balcony on a cruise
ship?

A10         Dave McGlade, Lives in The UnitedKingdom Oct 3

We book a balconyaround half the time and “ocean view’ (window) about the other
half. A few oddexceptions, but that's the norm.

The balcony gives more space, typically (not alwaysthough) and if the climate
is suitable, it is apleasant place to sit and relax. If you are a “fresh air
fiend’ it is farbetter than the air conditioning. You can often get a great
view of the portsboth as you arrive and when docked.

But I would alsotake the itinerary into account. The trip after next is to
Iceland. A lovelycountry, but I would not spend much time. on the balcony, so
that is an oceanview.
