CULTURAL QA 10-2022-20

BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Will leaving a fan running overnightruin it?

A1         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

No. Most people do not use AC in winter and use fan in bedrooms. They run over
night.

During summer alongwith AC or only as fans, most use fans in day time over day
in halls, livingareas.

Fans are designedto work overnight. But only for overnight,  not for days
together.

Q2         Do you lose any nutrients when you peela carrot?

A2         Lucia Garcia, Worked at Hospitals Oct12

Carrots are one of the most nutritious vegetables, which isan excellent source
of carotene.

Carrots have 30 to40 times more carotene than most vegetables. Carotene is a
natural antioxidantthat is widely used in medical and health care products.

Carotene is aprecursor of vitamin A, which is very helpful in protecting
eyesight, strengthening the immune system, and avoiding the risk of various
diseases.

A medium carrot weighsabout 80 grams and contains 3.8 mg of beta-carotene and
3.3 mg ofalpha-carotene.

Studies have shown that carotene is mainly found under thecarrot skin, which
has only a thin, almost transparent layer.

Carotene is themost important nutrient in carrots. Peeling the Skin of a Carrot
isEquivalent to Removing Most of the Carotene.

There is absolutelyno need to peel the carrots, just rinse them under running
water.

Q3         Is a dormitory available on the ChennaiCentral Railway Station?

A3         Thirunavukarasu Veluswamy,22h

Yes, dormitory isavailable in Chennai. But only 5 rooms available as per latest
informationwhich I got to know from authorities at Chennai central. So, the
only mode ofbooking is online through IRCTC website for dormitory\retiring
rooms. There wasan A\c waiting hall available which costs Rs 35 for one hour
post which, itcosts 25 Rs per hour. It's very tough to get a dormitory at
Chennai central.

My note- There was a FREE non AC dormitory in thefirst floor for transit of
upper class passengers. I have used it in 2004 whiletravelling from Varanasi to
Rameswaram. I am not sure whether it is there now.

Q4         How do you bring camera lenses from USto India? I want to buy 2
lenses and bring them in India with my friend in US.What should be the ideal
way to avoid duties and taxes?

A4         Prasanna Bhalerao, AmateurPhotographer, Nikon user22h

Best way is to getthe camera lenses as well as other equipment on person.
Nowadays, the customs don'tcare much about camera stuff. This is because same
goods areavailable in India. Unless there is a huge price difference I will say
buy thestuff in India itself.

Q5         Does electricity use cause outlets toheat up?

A5         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

The answer is NO and YES.Most outlets like plug and socket must have some
loose. Unless some loose is not thereit is not possible to remove the plug from
socket. It is natural todevelop more loose  on long periods dueto wear and
tire. Whencurrent is drawn for long duration one can feel the heat developing.

The same thing canbe there in joints also in the long period, connecting
lights, fans etc.

But new wiring, new socket and plug, the heat developmentis very less.

Q6         What are vacuum tubes? What is thepurpose of a vacuum tube? How come
vacuum tubes are not really usedanymore/common?

A6         Steven Haddock,Studied at West HIllCollegiate Fri

A vacuum tube is essentially any hollow glass tube, evacuated of oxygen and with
very low pressure inside, that has a “cathode” orelectron emitting surface, and
an “anode” or electron absorbing surface. Back in the days beforetransistors
and integrated circuits, they were used for controllingthe flow of electricity.

The simplest vacuum tube is the “diode” which actsas a one way gate for
electricity. There is no physical connection between the cathode and the anode
so anyelectrons in the cathode will only leave through the anode, but if you
putcurrent through the anode, it won’t flow in the other direction.

Next up is the “triode”. It’s alsoa one way gate but has two cathodes. The
second cathode regulates the flow ofelectricity - a lot of electrons go through
when very little current is appliedto the second cathode, but fewer electrons
go through when a lot is applied. Itwas used to automatically regulate the flow
of voltage and current.

On radios, for example, they were used for automaticvolume control, boosting
weak signals and turning down strong ones.

They’re not usedanymore because they’re bulky, hot, use a lot of power and are
unreliable.

The only thing thatkept them i use as long as they were used were that,
initially, transistors were more expensive.

My note- Nostalgic memories goes to my study in physicsclass in 1964.
Transisters were just coming up. I studied radio and television built using
anode, cathodeand triode.

I had a lecturerearlier worked in All India Radio, Bangalore who said in
occasion the diodes were there to the size of a copper boiler in the radio
station.

My murphy radio waswith diodes and I could see if the back panel opened, the
fitted diodes in amother board, and their glowing when current switched ON.
Only technicians will open back panel One could see the warming up ofthe radio
if operated for hours.

Q7         Which is better, skill or education?

A7         Rohit Virmani, Knows English UpdatedOct 10

This is the storyof Krishna Yadav. Coming from Bulandshahr in UP, she and her
family were facing acute financialcrisis.

Her husband wasfacing some major health issues which shifted major
responsibilities toKrishna’s shoulders. Shethen decided to move to Delhi for
better opportunities and borrowed a sum of Rs500 from a relative. She tried
hard to get a job, but all her efforts metfailure.

She then decided toget into farming which she continued for a few years. In
2001 after attending a3-month training in food processing, she invested a sum
of Rs 3,000 andprepared 2 different types of pickles. She earned a profit of Rs
5,250from selling the pickle. Although it wasn’t such a big amount, it was
veryencouraging for her.

She then put all her energy into making pickles and herhusband used to sell it
on the streets. Krishnareceived a great response to her products which further
boosted her confidence, and she scaled up her production.

Today, underthe banner of Shri Krishna Pickles, she owns 4 companies, and the
turnover ismore than 4 crores.

She has also beenawarded for her achievements in the field of women
entrepreneurship.

No intent toundermine education but this is the best example of Skill > Fancy
education.Sadly, Indian middle classhas a norm of pushing kids to do B.Tech/
B.Sc. from any random college with 0focus towards skill.

Q9         What are some parts of a house thatneed regular maintenance and why?

A9         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

The most important part in my view is outside of home.If the compound is kept
neat and tidy snakes will not come to the premises. Ifat all near by homes are
having not well maintained compounds, it does not matter, in cleaned premises,
they won’t remain, if at allthey creep in. Plantsmust be well maintained.

The toilets and bath rooms are to be wellmaintained. Bathroom must not have
unwanted items. Daily cleaning is a must.

The work area and kitchen are to be wellmaintained. If so, flies, mosquitos
etc. and other creatures will not appear.Waste has to be kept in waste box
having a top cover, sinks, vessels used for cooking and eating must be cleaned
immediately.

All parts of homerequire sweeping and moped. These are certain things coming to
me . There couldbe more items

Q10              What happens if we use only Indianbrands and stop buying
foreign brands?

A10       Balaji Viswanathan, follows governmentpolicies closely.5y

We had this sort of state before 1991. Imports wereseverely curtailed and
Indians were forced to predominantly use local products.Consumer choice was
non-existent.

If you didn’t likethe phone given by sarkari telecom, good luck. If you didn’t
like the comfortof Ambassador or Premier Padmini, take a hike. Customer service
was not a termin the lingo. Even the corporations had trouble. If you needed a
machinery fromJapan or Germany, you either have to grease the palm of a
government babu orput up with a local knockoff with terrible results.

And overall, we were a dirt poor country that was ignoredby most of the world.
However, Singapore, South Koreaand China had little issues trading with the
world. They imported a lot andexported even more.

Then in 1991 we took a baby step and slowly startedloosening the chains that we
put around ourselves. We didn’t open as much asSingapore or even China, but it
was way betterthan the time until 1990. Our imports grew, but so did our
exports.

Refiners in Jamnagar imported a lot of crude oil, processed and then started
exporting the much more profitable Diesel and Petrol. Jewellers in Surat
startedimporting more of raw diamonds and exported the much more valuable
diamondjewellery.

Tech firms in Bangalore imported a lot of software toolsand exported far more
valuable software services. AsMicrosoft, GE, Amazon and other major companies
came in, local supply chainsbecame stronger and new businesses came up.

Prosperity came with the half opened door [ourleaders got cold feet before
opening the door fully to let the fruits of tradecome in]. India was no longer
a basket case, but a power to be reckoned. It isstill not hunky dory though as
the government still has enormous control overimports and business in general.

We cansurely block products not made in India. And we really know how the
societywould look like. Just ask your mom and dad howtheir childhood was. We
have spent centuries being a frog in the well -ignoring the outside world - and
things should not be very unusual for us.

My note- Thoughswadesi is good idea, in a large outlook for development we
require imports andexports can bring a lot of benefit.  We wantgood imports.
Not junksand wastes what ever we make with them.
