SWITCH- PART 1

Though theword switch has many meanings, in the context of electric power, it
is aconductor wire or bit of conducting material which establish continuity in
the phase incase of AC current. In the case of DC current just establishing
continuity inthe positive side.

It must beensured the switch is connected to phase in the case of AC current.
What mademe to write about switch today is a QA about the effect of connecting
equipmentwhen the AC current is ON in a power socket and how the air can
becomea conductor and create spark in the cultural QA dated 22-10-22.

Interestingincidents, various types of switches, drawing current when a TV is
switched OFFby remote etc. are covered in in a most interesting
andunderstanding manner. There can be left outs, which members can point out.

1 Electric power using diesel generators.

I read long backabout the power supply to Trivandrum and Kowdiar Palace was
made availableusing diesel engine at a time. This engine gave supply to street
lamps andpalace from 6 PM to 2 AM in the morning or so. It was in year 1937.The
Kerala StateElectricity Board came into being in 1957. The diesel generator
sets wereauctioned; it is claimed that one of them was shifted to the Medical
College Trivandrum.

An old dieselgenerator set can be seen abandoned in the KSEB building inside
the MedicalCollege campus, but no one is able to ascertain if it came from the
Power House(it is a 12-cylinder engine made by Swiss Locomotive and Machine
Works – SLM).

The above is from an article in Hindu paper on August5, 2016.

2 When did Tamil Nadu got electricity?

Electricitygeneration in Tamil Nadu until about 1908 was confined to a few tiny
plants in Tea Estates run onwater power and to a small hydroelectric station at
Kattery near Coonoor. TheGovernment Electricity department was created in 1927.
The Pykara Hydroelectric Power Station wasconstructed by Sir John G.

When I joinedas junior engineer at Ranipet in 1967, the power supply was given
by a privatecompany- Vellore Electricity system.

3 When did Mysore got electricity? - Quora

The city gotpower supply for the first time on September 26, 1908, during the
reign of Nalwadi Krishna Raja Wadiyar.

4 When did Hydrabad get electricity?

Nizam ofHyderabad had electricity plant installed at Madinah in 1939.

In 1936, onthe occasion of his Silver Jubilee, the Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir
Osman Ali Khanhad proposed the installation of a new electric plant and lights
at the HolyProphet’s Mosque at Madina, Saudi Arabia at his expense. The older
electricplant was apparently out of order as it had been fitted by the Ottoman
Rulersmany years ago. It was India's first thermal power station, opened in
1920 bythe erstwhile seventh Nizam of Hyderabad.

Operator(s):Hyderabad State Electricity Depar...

Location:Hyderabad, Telangana, India

Nameplatecapacity: 22.5 MW.Commission date: 1920

Theabove are information by Google search.

5. How earliest power distribution was done

I am fromKerala and in Kerala; the power distribution is mostly from
hydroelectricprojects. The electric power is taken from PowerStation to
substations by ACSR wire erected using towers madewith steel frames and angles.
These were connected to insulators inthe supporting tower. These are called
tower lines. The ACSR wire having morediameter sag is more in the wires. From a
distance the lowest line may appearone can reach by hand, but going near one
would observe it is above 20 feet height and notall reachable by human hands or
elephant’s tusk

Fromsubstations the power is taken to transformers and from transformers
tocustomers. Most of the transformers were kept in a frame work using
chemically treatedteakwood poles of good diameter and to customers using
teakwood poles, sometimes less thicker. Of late these poles are changed to RCC
or other type ofpoles. Wires remain ACSRtill today.

6. Power leading

Earlier timesonly single phase supply was given to homes. It was taken through
whether proofwires. Later 3 phase supply also was taken to customers through
whether proofwires. Of late powercable is laid to subs premises

4. Fuses in the distribution pole.

The powertapped from the ACSR wires is lead to a teak wood board fitted with
1/3 ceramic type fuse using thickinsulated copper.  Tapping is one byplacing
the copper wire with a hook, and tightened using cutting plier. Ofcourse supply
is switched OFF and lineman wear rubber glove in the hand.

Theelectricity board provides fusewire according to load intimated to the
electricity Board after wiringcompletion and inspection. A plug point whether
used or not is calculated asabout 1000 watts.  If additional wiringis done and
load is more, it has to be intimated to electricity board office inthe locality
and fuse wire has to be changed.

If electricbill is not paid first a cutout fuse was removed inthe customer
premises. If still not paid, the fuse in the post was removedearlier. Now
cautiondeposits are collected from customers and fuse wire is not removed in
cut outin the premises or in the pole. Customers have to pay bill with fine if
not paid withindue date.

In Tamilnadupayment is done mostly by online and bill too comes on line in
Chennai. Earliermeter reading was noted and we had to take card with bill
payment amount.

5. Cutout fuse.

The powerlead/leads from the EB pole are taken to distribution board mostly
kept outsidehome on wall for convenience of taking meter reading. In the
distributionboard, through fuse/fuses, supply is wired to single phase/three
phase meter. The output from the meter is connected to main switch via cut outs.
Thesecontain ceramic fuse/fuses in an oval box and sealedby electricity board.
Customer should not tamper the cut out.

6. Main switch and power distribution

Main switchhas three ceramic fuses. Operating ON leads the power supply
toDistribution panel. Distribution panel uses circuit breakers nowadays. It
iskept at height, and if convenient kept closed. If kept closed to see if
supplyfails the door has to be opened and see.

7. Difference between fuse and switch

Fuse has abottom with wiring for letting IN and letting out supply wires which
arescrewed to terminals in the base of the fuse. A removable top carries
fusewire.  On insertion tightly power supplyis put through by the fuse. If fuse
wire has melted during over load orcontinuous use, it is replaced by a
technician who is either ITI or diplomaholder. If at allelectrical engineers or
persons having engineering knowledge, if they are aged, better call a technician
who would carry out the work neatly.

I was puttingthrough the burnt fuses earlier. Now I ask the technician to come.
I am notable to make the tightness as they make now.

Switch is a mechanismfitted on switch board, just by pressing down, a metallic
strip inside willswitch through connection.

I will continue in next posting
