Respected friends,

Wish you all a happy Deepavali

Q1         Dolight bulbs use the same amount of energy as an electric heater?

A1         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Most electricheaters work consuming energy of more than 1000 watts per hour.
Most tungstenfilament bulbs are below 100 watts. It is almost obsolete in
India. Now LED bulbs are 15–20 watts only. So there isno comparison at all.
Electricheater, I have considered here- an electric stove and not water heater.

Q2         Howcan you tell if an electrical device is using power when it's
turned off?

A2         Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Some electricequipment consume power whenthey are switched OFF using remote
like the TV or by senser like in ROS waterpurifier. In the case of a mixer when
switched OFF in the machine, not in the power plug.

Most would haveobserved the message - fullycharged, please remove the charger
from socket to save energy whenthe mobile is put on charge and charge and
charged fully. Though the quantityenergy is marginal, the current can
deteriorate the functioning of theequipment

Q3         Isit safe for Tamil Brahmins to return to Tamil Nadu, to take care
of their agingparents, after staying outside of TN for a decade?

A3         Balaji Viswanathan, Lived in Chennai,Tamil Nadu, India21h

Don’tknow who are writing these divisive questions. Tamil Nadu is an extremely
safe state foreveryone, including the Tamil Brahmins. I have studied & lived
over 20years in various parts of TN. Tamil Nadu is brilliantly steeped in
culture& traditions. This is possibly the last place Brahminswould feel
insecure even if they are denied of opportunities in medicine, administration
etc.

Just like in everyother state, Tamil Nadu has its share of anti-Hindus and
people with extremistviews. Like most extremists elsewhere they are just
keyboard warriors withfiery words but no real impact on the ground. The
majority of TN is verypeaceful, pious and work on the same objectives as
everyone else in thecountry.

I see a lot ofoutsiders & some Tamil Brahmins even trying to speak ill of Tamil
people& language. That is stupid. Tamil is a beautiful language with one of
themost important literature for Hindu religion. Until the mid 20th century
CE,most Tamils have held no ill will against Sanskrit or rest of India.
Tholkappiamdescribes Tamils worshipping Vedic gods such as Indra and Varuna,
whileThiruvalluvar describes Havis [Vedic fire worship]. Kamba Ramayanam is one
ofthe most beautiful Ramayanam versions and Tamil kings such as Cholas,
Pallavasand Pandians were great Hindus — building Shiva, Vishnu and Shakti
templestogether.

Trying to hateTamil for the sake of a few DMK activists would be akin to hating
north Indiafor the sake of Rahul Gandhi or Mayawati.

My note- DMK isnot hating Brahmins. I havewatchedin TV during covid period, Mr
Stalion distributing money to sasasthrikals ,srardha Bhokthas etc in Chennai.

Q4         Whyare the back wheels of a school bus almost in the middle rather
than at therear?

A4         Mike Broberg, Lead Mechanic atSalem-Keizer Public Schools
(1992–present)Thu

School buses comein all kinds of configurations the one your describing is
probably a highcapacity conventional. This one is a 72 passenger, they can be
made evenlonger.

The wheelbase(distance between the front and rear axle) can only be so long so
to increasethe passenger size, some of the passenger area hangs over the back
axle.

This is a shorterversion of the same type of bus:You can get an idea of the
length by assumingeach passenger window is about 28″ wide.

If the longer bushad the rear axle at the rear of the bus it would be too long
to go aroundcorners and frame would not be able to support the weight.

Q5         Whatare the risks of eating an entire banana? How much harm can be
done by eatingone whole banana at once (not including the skin)?

A5         Richard Dawkins,Bar Steward. PullingPints at Continental
(1992–present) Thu

One banana is aportion of fruit 5 portions of fruit (different colours) is part
of a healthylifestyle. I personallyhave at least one banana a day. They are
good at night, to help you sleep andin making smoothies. Exercise. 140 squats
before breakfast. Yoga (which I learned from a book) and then through years of
practice. 30 minutes 90minutes after breakfast. Then 10 15. 10 press ups 15. 25
15 sit ups again I'vebeen doing this for years it get s easier. The squats I do
40 ten breath rest50 ten breath rest then 40 to build stamina and produce
endorphins

My note- Some times banana is used to mean plantain, andforeigners mostly use
to mention in that sense.Perhaps in Kerala and Tamilnadu, banana means a type
of plantainlarger in size and slightly difficult to digest comparing other
plantains.

Present day redbanana, and Rasthali available in Chennai is 3/4th size of Banana

Q6         Whydoesn't Indian Railway increase the number of general coaches
inspite of havingso much rush in these?

A6         Shubham Nelge, Studies VijayanagaraInstitute of Medical Sciences,
Bellary (Expected 2025) Updated 8h

This is thecondition of people travelling in general compartment. Earlier there
used to be 4–5general compartments for express trains, but nowadays I have seen
trains havingjust 2general compartments which makes these people to travel in
thesecondition. Indian Railways wants to increase the profitability atthe cost
of poor people's displeasure/discomfort.

Indian Railwayscan't increase the number of bogies so they reduced the numberof
general compartments and increased the AC Compartments so that railways canearn
more profits

But this is makingpoor people's life harder. Poor people in India are left at
the mercy of god

My note- Notonly ordinary people, and even rich people who cannot get
reservation. Evenflights are not available frequently to go on urgency to a
place or near to it.

Q7         Howis the life of a Railway Loco Pilot?

A7         Satish Shrivastav, Senior AssistantLoco Pilot at Indian Railways
(2019–present) Updated Oct 15

It is one of the toughest jobs in Indian Railway.

Below are somepoints that can help you to know about the lives of Loco Pilots.

Loco Pilot isresponsible for the lives of thousands of people and costly goods.
Our duty timings are not fixed.    We have to work against nature.

We hardly get tocelebrate any festival with our loved ones. While working on
festivals likeDiwali, Holi, Eid wemiss our family just like military personnel.
(Me and my batch matesduring night at Karjat ) (Training Time)

We don't get any incentives other than running allowance.( Edit 1: we don't get
incentives for energy saving, fuel saving, accidentprevention, risk allowance
etc).

In case of anaccident, we have to deploy detonators on the railway track to
save othertrains and passengers. The detonator thing is tough one. Becauseafter
accident there is chaos everywhere and first thing we have to do is, run1.5 km
( both ways ) and install the detonators so that no other train comes to
thatparticular track.

Sometimes we have to remove dead bodies of animals, humans, from the railway
track after run over.

We have to facerain, foggy weather and many more atmospheric conditions while
running.

Sometimes we areforced to work more than our duty hours due to non-availability
of staff.

If you work on agoods train, working hours can be extended up to 12 hours or
more.

We have to carry 3–4 liters of water along with us (oneof the toughest thing to
do).

We can't go toour home immediately in emergency cases, because we can't leave
the Locomotiveduring the trip.We have to inform our supervisor to arrange
another staff and we have to waitfor them.

We do not get therespect we deserve, but we still work hard for our country and
Indian Railway.

We can't go to the toilet while working as there is nofacility of a toilet in a
locomotive (This facility is under development)

After some years ofworking, we often acquire various diseases like hearing
abnormality, heartproblems, hair fall, eye weakness due to the working
conditions.

In Summers, we have to sit in temperatures as high as45–55 degree Celsius.

Often there are dangerous snakes and other animals in ouryard and on track. A
few months ago, one of my friends was bitten by a snakewhile inspecting a
Locomotive,  he wassaved by God's grace.

Many times we areattacked by the public because they think that the Loco Pilots
are the reasonfor train’s delay. That's the reason why motormen of Mumbai don't
wear uniformsso that they can easily mix up in the crowd.

We can't take phonecalls during the trip (really tough situation for a young
guy like me...Hahahaha).The list is along .but we still love this job and yes
we are Govt employees and we work 24×7for our country.

“I am proud of my job, humbled by my responsibilities. Iam a Loco Pilot, I am
Indian Railways.”

Q8         Whatis the best fruit to eat after a meal?

A8         Jurgena Kapllani, WRITER ARTICLE ,(2006–present)Thu

Preferably, fruit should be eaten before the two mainmeals because the fibers
it contains help reduce the absorption of simplesugars, thus reducing the
glycemic index of foods.

Eating fruits right after a meal is not a great idea, asit may not be digested
properly. The nutrients may not be absorbed properlyeither. You need to leave
agap of at least 30 minutes between a meal and a fruit snack

My note- Though theortically it is OK, most get satisfactionby eating fruit
AFTER meals with in 2-3 minutes.

Q9         Whydo the Japanese eat a lot of rice and use it in most of their
dishes? Is itsomething cultural?

A9         Hantani Sadahiko, Lives in Japan(1967–present)Oct 17

In Japan, we call ameal (gohan(rice)).Forthe Japanese, eating means eating
rice. This is why rice is said to be a staplefood. For the Japanese, eating means
eating rice, and side dishes exist to addflavor to rice. That's why rice comes
with every dish.

Rice is a powerfulenergy source. If you look at the main ingredients, you'll
find that it's 77%carbohydrate, 6% protein, and 1% fat, making it the kind of
gasoline that getsyour body moving. What's more, it has a high digestion and
absorption rate of98%, which translates to 356 calories per 100 g of polished
rice. It is alsothe protein source that makes the body.

It takes protein fromfish and meat that rice lacks.

We get vitamins from vegetables that rice doesn't haveenough. This is the basic
system of Japanese food. Rice and one soup and threeside dishes.Rice is a
source of energy for theJapanese.

Q10              Docruise ships have to generate their electricity via the
ships engines?

A10       Rob Boardman, Former ATC, truck Driverand Reader of Everything Wed

Most cruiseships have four or five very large diesel generators to power the
electricdrive motors for the ship (they are true diesel-electrics).

They do that toreduce vibration for the passengers, and so that they can choose
how manyengines to run depending on the cruising speed they want. For example,
onecruise ship I travelled on had 4 x 9800 hp MAN straight eight diesel
generatorsrunning at a steady 480rpm or so. They could cruise on one engine at
9 knots, two engines at 14 knots, and three at 18.5 knots. They rarelyused all
four engines at once - they usually had one engine in reserve andcould do
maintenance etc on it as required. That meant they could use less fuel ifthe
next stop was a short overnight trip, by shutting down one or more engines, and
still provide the required hotel load.

So it makesperfectly good sense that those same diesels generate the hotel load
for the shipas well.

In port, when not driving the ship at all, usually onemain engine is kept
running to provide the electrical load.

I seem to rememberthat it did have a smaller dedicated standby diesel for a
partial hotel load, which was almost never used - it was an emergency backup
generator only.
