Commentary on the Katha Upanishad

OLD AGE PADMA PURANAM

*Yajāti said**:*

66. O best one, please tell me in detail, from what old age has sprung up
and why it troubles the body.

*Mātali said**:*

67-95. I shall describe to you the cause of old age; and why it has sprung
up in the body, O you best king. The body of the nature of the five
elements, is resorted to by the five objects of sense. O king, when the
soul leaves the body, it (i.e. the body) is burnt. O king, when blazing
with fire the body burns along with the fluids. From it smoke is produced,
and from smoke clouds are produced. Water proceeds from the clouds; the
earth becomes ready for water as a chaste woman in her menses implores
water. From that odour is produced, and fluid is produced from odour, O
best king. From the fluid food is produced, and semen is produced from
food. There is no doubt about this. From semen body is produced; and body
is surely ugly. As the earth (element) would produce odour and it moves on
the earth through fluids, similarly the body would always move. It is
everywhere the substratum of fluids. From it odour is produced and again
fluid would be (produced) from odour. From it is produced great fire; O
king, mark the analogy.

As fire is produced from wood, and would illumine wood, in the same
way in the body fire is produced from fluid. It moves there (in the body)
and, O king, it always nourishes the body. As long as there is
preponderance of fluid (in the body) the soul is tranquil. Fire moving (in
the body) like that remains in the form of hunger. Being sharp it desires
food with water; O king, it receives the gift—food and water also. The fire
consumes blood and semen also like that; there is no doubt about it. Due to
that there would be consumption destroying the entire body. O king, when
there would be preponderance of fluid, the fire is put down. Being troubled
by the fluid, it is produced in the form of fever. The fire having arrested
the neck, the back, the waist, the anus remains in all the joints. (Thus)
the fire moves on in the body. Its preponderance always continues to exist,
and nourishes the body on all sides. (When) the fluid is restrained, it
then becomes powerful.

Being excessive due to power, it would move the vital parts of the
body through the semen. Due to that lust is produced; and O king, it would
become (i.e. becomes) of the nature of a dart. O king, it is called the
fire of lust, which destroys strength. Due to addiction to coitus
destruction (takes place) in the body. A being oppressed by the fire of
lust would resort to a female. Due to addiction to sexual intercourse, the
body which is made violent and emaciated by lust, would become void of
lustre, and there is a loss of strength (in the body). The (already) weak
body becomes (more) weak when urged on by fire. That fire would consume
blood and semen in the body. Due to the consumption of semen and blood, the
body becomes dispirited. A violent wind of a terrible form is produced; and
then he would be pale, tormented with grief and of a vacant mind. He moves,
having in his mind that woman whom he has seen or about whom he has heard.
When the course of the mind (i.e. the mind) is greedy, there is no
satisfaction in (i.e. of) the body. When the lustful man, ugly or handsome,
becomes weak due to brooding and the loss of flesh and blood, there appears
old age in the body (being) consumed by the fire of lust. Due to that, he
being (more) lustful, becomes older and older day by day. As a usurer
thinks of money, so he thinks of a woman in (i.e. for) coitus; so also, O
lord of men, there is a loss of his lustre. From that a body is produced,
and he perishes. Then undoubtedly fire in the form of old age is again
produced; and then there is a terrible fever in the form of (i.e. of the
nature of) consumption in the beings. All the immobile and the mobile ones
being tormented by fever and by many other troubles, perish. All this I
have told you; what else should I tell?

Vṛddha (वृद्ध) Old age: Vṛddha (वृद्ध).—[adjective] grown up, adult,
large, tall, strong, intense, great, high, important, aged, old, skilful,
clever, distinguished or eminent by ([instrumental] or —°); glad, cheerful,
haughty, arrogant; subject to Vṛddhi ([grammar]). 1) Old age;

2; तस्य धर्मरतेरासीद् वृद्धत्वं जरया (*tasya dharmaraterāsīd vṛddhatvaṃ
jarayā*) (*jarasā*) विना (*vinā*) 1.23.

KATHOPANISHAD:

śatāyuṣaḥ putra-pautrān vṛṇīṣva bahῡn paśῡn hasti-hiraṇyam aśvān

bhῡmer mahad-āyatanaṁ vṛṇīṣva svayaṁ ca jīva śarado yāvad icchasi. (23)

“I offer you big posterity, wealth, cattle, gold and elephants in plenty;
land and long life for yourself.”

etat tulyam yadi manyase, varaṁ vṛṇīṣva, vittaṁ cira-jīvikāṁ ca,

mahā-bhῡmau naciketas tvam edhi, kāmānāṁ tvā kāmabhājaṁ karomi. (24)

“Any boon like this that you want, choose it, and wealth and long life.
Prosper, O Nachiketas, on this vast earth!” { aaseervada mantram)

Sankara’s interpretation is unique: It is not that someone chooses,
because, for Sankara, that someone does not exist to choose. His
understanding of this part of the mantra is: “He is beheld only by That
which is the seeker himself.” That which you behold is within yourself, is
the meaning. Who is the seeker? Is he outside the Atman? God is the
prompter even behind the seeker. *Sadhana *is not possible without Him.
Rather than from without, the choice has to come from within. The seeker
and the sought are one. The sought or God is not outside the seeker,
choosing him arbitrarily; if it were so, we would have to attribute
partiality to Him. Reality is one, and on the basis of this doctrine, Sankara
opines that Self-knowledge is an inexplicable wonder: it arises—that is
all. It is not caused by the *jiva*, because he has no freedom. But, if God
is the cause, what conditions does He impose? If you say it is the
*jiva’s *karmas,
you limit His power; so even that is not a satisfactory explanation. Hence,
either you accept that God’s ways are mysterious, ununderstandable, or
knowledge is a miracle, and when you say miracle, you cannot say anything.
By the passage of time, by the fructification of good deeds, by the process
of the universe, by the grace of God—by a mysterious combination of all
these factors which the *jiva *cannot understand, God is revealed. When He
reveals Himself, the person (*jiva*) is no more. God reveals Himself to
Himself. It is not an end reached by the effort of human personality.

The whole difficulty is expressed in a single statement: the Atman is the
subject, not the object. Thus, He cannot be manipulated by an instrument.
Speech, mind and intellect are signified by the terms *pravacanena medhaya*.
Speech is indicative of all senses. So, not through them, not through the
mind, not through the intellect can the Atman be realised, because these
faculties have a tendency to move outward. They catch the object, not the
subject. The mind never catches the mind. Both the mind and intellect work
on the dictate of the senses which are untrustworthy, concluding that all
reality is confined to phenomena. Any description of the Atman is given by
them, and they cannot conceive of anything other than objects. This mystery
of *atmasakshatkara *is given in the second half of the verse. The Atman
chooses the Atman. God chooses God. It is Self-efflorescence. To such a
fortunate being who has so withdrawn himself into himself that he is
indistinguishable from the Supreme Subject, to such a one is the Atman
revealed—not by process, but instantaneously. It is a timeless flash of a
sudden consciousness which is called *atmasakshatkara*. It comes by the
maturity of one’s *sadhana*. The links of this process are indescribable.
The last occurrence is such that it cannot be regarded as an effect of all
the preceding ones, though it comes as a result of these. It is beyond the
causational process.

YOGA VASISHTAM Chapter XXII - Obloquy of old age Book 1 vairagya
kandam:

1. Boyhood has scarcely lost its boyishness when it is overtaken by youth,
which is soon followed by a ruthless old age, devouring the other two.

2. Old age withers the body like a frost freezing the lake of lilies. It
drives away the beauty of the person as a storm does the autumnal clouds;
and it pulls down the body, as a current carries away a tree on the bank.

3. The old man with his limbs slackened and worn out by age, and his body
weakened by infirmity, is treated by women as a useless beast.

6. A man in his state of tottering old age, is scoffed at as a dotard by
his own sons and servants, and even by his wife, and all his friends and
relations.

10.What am I that is brought to this extremity of senselessness, what can I
do in this state. I must remain dumb and silent. Under these reflections
there is an increased sense of helplessness in old age.

11.How and when and what shall I eat, and what is sweet to taste? These are
the thoughts which trouble the mind of one when old age comes upon him.

13. Hoary old age sits and shrieks as a heron on the top of the tree of
this body, which is infested within it by the serpents of sickness.

18. Old age with its whooping cough lays hold on a man, just as a vulture
seizes its prey with loud shrieks in order to devour it.

20. As the chill blast of winter shakes a tree and covers its leaves with
dust, so does old age seize the body with a tremor and fill all its limbs
with the rust of diseases.

21. The body overtaken by old age becomes as pale and battered, as a lotus
flower beaten by frost becomes withered and shattered.

28. The body, like a flowering creeper, bends down under the pressure of
age, turns to grey like the fading leaves of a plant, and becomes as lean
and thin as a plant after its flowering time is over.

37. It is the extinction of being that is preceded by old age; therefore I
as a man of little understanding, can have no reliance in old age (though
extolled by some)

38.What then is the good of this miserable life, which lives under the
subjection of old age? Senility is irresistible in this world, and defies
all efforts to avoid or overcome it.
