BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         What is the reason behind the number ofsleeper coaches in a train
always being odd?

A1          Siva Kumar Bachoti, Former SoftwareQuality Assurance Manager2h

There isno rule that a train should have only odd number of coaches. There are
three factors that decide it - 1) maximum load the locomotive cantake
(typically up to 900tons for a diesel one), 2) the expected traffic ( i.e.
passenger load) forthat service and 3) the number of coaches the operating
station can allocate.

As such availablenumber of good quality coaches is at premium. We don’t have
the number we badly need. This is the reason low priority local passengertrains
get poor quality (i.e. old & over-used) coaches. This is true forexpress trains
too.

My note- Inspecial trains very poor quality coaches to be condemned are
attached.

Q2         What are the bitter truths of going tothe US to pursue an MS, as an
Indian?

A2          Swathi Raghavadoss Nirmala, SoftwareEngineer at Facebook (company)6y

You get admitted tothe school of your dreams and you’re excited beyond belief.
You’re 21 years oldand looking forward to life as an adult, moving out of your
parents’ and havingno curfews. You’re about to move to a big city in the USA
and you’re gonna docollege right this time around. You think you have it all
figured out - you’re gonna be a straight A’sstudent, party hard on the
weekends, snag a high-paying job in the bay area, pay off your student loan debt
within a year of graduating and go back to Indiaafter earning a lot of money.
All of that may eventually happen, but it’s not going to be awalk in the park
by any means.

You get off yourplane and take a cab to your new home. A two bedroom apartment
that you wouldshare with 4 other people because come on, you cannot afford a
room by yourself in LA. Youbuy yourself a crappy twin bed, a study table and a
chair for furniture. Itdoesn’t feel like home.

You go toyour first day of classes and fail to understand more than 10% of what
theprofessors are teaching. You have to take three courses butyou take four
because you’ll perform poorly in one of them and will have todrop it later.

You go groceryshopping with your roommates and after spending your first 30
minutes in thecereal aisle looking at all the different brands, kinds and sizes
of cerealboxes, you decide on the cheapest one. After you’re done with the rest
of the grocery shopping, you decide to save $4 by walking the 1.5 miles home
instead of calling an Uber. You don’t foresee one of the paper bags will rip
open and all your stuff willspill out on the curb.

You call yourparents twice every day to let them know you’re okay. You cook
sambhar for thefirst time as your mom instructs you over the phone. You’re
disappointed whenit turns out decent enough, but nothing like hers.

It’s been a month now. Your assignments are pilingup and your midterms are
approaching. You have never worked this hard yourwhole life, but you’re still
on the left side of the bell curve. You learn thatit’s time to start
interviewing for your summer internship. Summer is 6 monthsaway but most of the
positions at tech companies are already filled.

One day, you feel really feverish and find that you can’tget out of bed. You
wanna be lying on your mom’slap and have her hand on your forehead. But you
have a test to give andassignments to finish. You have to get up and go on with
your day.

Your calls homehave gotten fewer and further between. Your mom sends you
angry/hurt textsasking you why you don’t call. You try to skype over the
weekend but your dadstarts tearing up when he sees you. You hardly talk to your
little brother anymore.

You see yourfriends’ long distance relationships start to fall apart and you’re
glad thatyou don’t have a boyfriend back home.

You think you willnot have time for friends in grad school but in spite of
everything, after sometime, you make a few friends who are in the same boat as
you. And when you do,you hold on to them because that’s when things will start
to get better.

Through failed job interviews, B grades, heartbreaks anddays when you really
miss home, they’re gonna bethere for you and give you a shoulder to cry on.
They’ll be happy for you whenyou finally land a job, even though they’re still
looking for one. It’s a rat race out there and youcan’t come out on top without
friends by your side.

Most importantly, everyone needs a family away from home.

Q3         Was the invention of computersinevitable?

A3          Steve Baker,Senior Software Engineer(2013–present)Tue

They were kind of invented three times.

Charles Babbage clearlyinvented a fullyprogrammable mechanical computer - the
“Analytical Engine” - butnever got around to actually building one. A team
called “Plan 5” are workingtowards building on for the London Science
Museum…and they are of the view thathis design would have worked.

After that though -his work was pretty much forgotten and there were no
computers until Konrad Zuse built a seriesof working computers at the start of
WWII in Germany.

But even his workwas largely unknown when Alan Turing built his “code cracking”
computer duringWWII.

So clearly, theidea for what a computer can be has been independently conceived
by at leastTHREE (and possibly four) people…each with little or no knowledge of
the other.

That suggests to me that once we had modestly capablerelays or thermionic
valves or transistors - theinvention would be inevitable. Of course Babbage
conceived of this using levers and gearwheels.

Q4         Why would a ceiling fan stop workingsuddenly, but it starts with
just one push on its switch?

A4          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

First observe whether  the situation arise frequently

Secondly if thesame situation repeats, I find two possibilities. One, any ball
bearing may have problem in themotor , second the switch has just started
developing a loose connection.Call a technician, he will find out the actual
reason and set right it.

Q5         What is the problem with a fan thatdoes not rotate unless rotated
manually to start?

A5          Jack Farrow, Follow Studied ElectricalEngineering & Computer
Science at University of Michigan (Graduated 1971)2y

It probably needs to be oiled.

The starting torqueof the shaded pole motors often used for fans is VERY LOW.
It doesn’t take muchfriction in the bearings to prevent starting. The oil in
the fan bearings gradually deteriorates andturns intosomething like wax. This
wax-like substance is not a good lubricant.

You will have topartly disassemble the fan to get to both of the bearings that
need oil. Uselubricating oil, not a something from a spray can like WD-40. Add
a littleextra oil, move the motor shaft back-and-forth lengthwise, let the
motor runfor several minutes and then clean-up what drips out. The “new” oil
willdissolve the waxy remains of the “old” oil and replace it.

If you re-oil a fan motor once every 2–3 years, it willlast almost forever! I
have several fans that are over30 years old and they still work like new.

My note- The same problem frequently occurs insump motors, if at all they are
new. To avoid the torque it is suggested to operate the motor at least
fiveminutes  every day.

The same problemoccurs less frequently in bore well motors. In the case of bore
well motors one has to call electricians.Sump motor problem being in ground
level can be solved by persons havingelectrical knowledge, switch OFF the
motor, remove the fan cover by removingthe screws, lubricate the rod connecting
fan and motor with good oil, wait 2minutes, slowly move the fan. The rod will
rotate. Ensure more force is not applied on the PVC blades of fan, which
maybreak other wise. Now switch ON the motor.

Q6         Why do most of the heart attacks takeplace between 3 and 4 am?

A6          Dr.Ganeshakrishnan Iyer, MBBS, MS,MCh. Lead Consultant - CTVS
Surgery Sat

It is really aninteresting question, and the answer is not what you might
think. It's not because people eat alot in the middle of the night. It's not
because of sleep apnea. It'snot because we are uninsured. It's not because our
blood pressure is high, either. It's not because we're all overweight. And it's
not because we're notgetting sufficient exercise.

Believe it or not,it is because we are more stressed out at night.
That'sbecause our body releases a whole lot of stress hormone in the late
evening. If you are stressed out, you'llexperience the worse symptoms at this
time - sweating, tingling sensation inthe hands, cold and sweaty hands or feet,
dizziness, tachycardia, even chestpain. We experience most of these symptoms
after midnight than anyother time of the day. Theheart rate goes up, and your
heart is not able to pump out blood as effectively. The reason is simple, while
we are able to store just a small amount of fat inour body, we can stockpile a
lot of emotions, like anger, stress and anxiety, which circulate throughout the
body. So, if you are too stressed or angry, your body willrelease all these
emotions at the same time.

Q7         How far should you place a ceiling fanfrom the bed?

A7          Frank Eggers, Lives in Palm Springs,CA (2021–present)18h

To a large degree, where a ceiling fan should be located in a room is a matter
of personalpreference. In a house thatI had designed for myself, I had the
ceiling fan directly over my bed so that Icould reach the chain from my bed.
There was also a wall speedcontrol which I left on medium speed. Thus, by
pulling the chain, I could select medium, low, andextra low speeds.

There was also aconnection box in the middle of the room so if the next owner
of the house did not like the fan overthe bed, it could easily be moved to the
middle of the room.Actually the real estate agent had the fan relocated before
the house wasshown.

If you do locate the fan directly over the bed, even thenormal low speed may
provide too much air flow. But if there is also a wall speed control you can run
the fan at an extra lowspeed which should be fine.

My note- If a fan is right above my head  when I go to sleep, I will have the
apprehension if it fell on me during sleep, unless I am too tired and wanted
sleep. Better have the fan in the centre of the room.Even one can dream the fan
had fallen on him.

Q8         What is the difference between Rajdhaniand Shatabdi Express trains?
Which one is faster?

A8          Anirban Sengupta, Research Scholar atJadavpur University
(2022–present)Fri

Shatabdi is a short distance superfast premium categorytrain that connects two
important cities. They areonly chair car trains, containing AC chair car,
Executive Chair car andAnubhuti Class Chair car (only in a few Shatabdis).
Usually the max permissible speed of Shatabdis are130kmph with the exception of
Bhopal Shatabdi whose max permissiblespeed is 150kmph.

Rajdhanis on the other hand connects important cities tothe National Capital.
They are also fully airconditioned, however , with sleeping facilities. These
trains come with AC 3 tier, AC 2 tier andFirst AC coaches. Max permissible
speed of Rajdhanis are 130kmph.Youwill find catering services in both Rajdhanis
and Shatabdis.

Q10              Why don't some TV manufacturersuse Android TV?

A10        Prasanna Bhalerao, M. Sc. in Electronics& Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune Sat

Actually, more and more manufacturers have switched toAndroid TV. The reasons
are simple:

Don't need aninternal software team to develop the smart TV OS and apps

Don't need asoftware team to maintain and update OS and apps.

Ready made platform by Google and only a small royalty topay.

Better forconsumers also as they get a uniform UI and wall.In fact, I can see
the sunsetof proprietary webOS in TVs.
