CULTURAL QA 12-2022-16

BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1           Whatare the benefits of being a member of an airline lounge at an
internationalairport (i.e., Singapore Changi)?

A1           Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | Foodie Wed

I have recently gotthe privilege to access airport lounges and have only
availed the facility once at Kolkata internationalairport in October this year.
So my impression of the lounge is only onthe basis of that one-time experience.

An airport loungeseems to be a greatplace to relax and enjoy some light food
before catching your flight. Waitingin front of the boarding gate gets boring,
especially if the wait is long andit gradually turns irritating if the flight
is delayed. But if you are waitingin the lounge on a cozy chair or couch, the
wait is tolerable. Moreover, youget spoiled with the buffet spread available
and yes, that is entirely free of cost!

When I was flyingin October, I had an early morning flight at 7 in the morning.
That means I couldn'thave breakfast at home since I had to leave home at 4 in
the morning. Now, Ihad the option to buy breakfast at the food court of the
airport, but you knowhow expensive airport food is. It would have been a costly
affair. Instead, I chose to go to thelounge and I could have a sumptuous
complimentary breakfast.

Besides that, Icould rest for a while on the couch. I didn't get a good night's
sleep, so itwas important for me to relax because I had to attend my office as
soon as Ilanded. As much as youhave entertainment and food options, you have
options to relax as well.I saw some great recliners at one corner of the
airport but all were occupied.I plan to use them the next time I visit the
lounge. They must be superb!

Q2           Whichstate has many temples in India?

A2           Jyoti Jindal, Astrologer atJyotishay.com (2022–present)Nov 17

Tamil Nadu has moretemples than any other states of India. Tamil Nadu is home
to more than 40,000 Hindu temples and isaptly called "the land of temples" by
media. Many are at least800 years old and are found scattered all over the
state. The rulers of variousdynasties constructed these temples over centuries.
Vimanas (storeys) and Gopuram (towering gateways tothe temple complex) best
characterize the temples of Tamil Nadu.

As per Tamil NaduHindu Endowments Board, there are 38,615 temples. Most of the
largest Hindutemples reside here. Studded with complex architecture, variety of
sculptures, and rich inscriptions, the temples remain the very essence of the
culture andheritage of Tamil land with historical records dating back to at
least 3,000years.

In Madurai,Meenakshi Amman Temple has high ‘Gopuram’ towers ornamented with
colourfulfigures. On Pamban Island, Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous
pilgrimage site. The town of Kanyakumari, at India's southernmost tip, is the
site of ritualsunrises.

Q3           Wasit really a dark time during the Dark Ages, or is that just
hyperbole?

A3           Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Mon

Neither. The post-Romanperiod is called the Dark Ages because it was a period
where public literacywas low, so outside the monasteries and a few Viking sagas
there were very fewwritten accounts to “illuminate” the period. But it
wasn’tespecially uncivilised.

Q4           Whatare some of the most effective and scientifically proven ways
to increasetestosterone?

A4           Ken Saladin, Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)Tue

Attempts to artificially increase testosterone level aredangerous, with many
undesirable side effects. Some people ask me about doing this to attain a
greater adult height, but taking it in adolescenceactually stunts one’s growth,
making abusers shorter in adulthood.

Q5           Howdid prehistoric women gave birth? With no culture, very limited
communicationwith other people and very little tools to work with, did most of
them just dieafter one single childbirth? Were they physically stronger and
thus able tosurvive?

A5           Mats Andersson, Common or GardenArmchair Historian Mon

Our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees, never givebirth alone. If at all
possible, they have at least one older, experiencedfemale around to help.

Given what we knowabout behaviour, this means that in all likelihood, this
behaviour was around in our last commonancestor—some 5 to 7 million years ago,
which means several million yearsbefore there were any humans at all. And of
course, this behaviour has beenaround in every human society ever.

The oldestprofession is midwife.Show them some respect; we wouldnever have made
it this far without them

Q6           Doesstress cause insomnia or do sleepless nights cause stress and
anxiety?

A6           DrBashir Ahmad Chaudhry, Doctor atAmmad Clinic (2005–present)47m

It is oftena chicken-and-egg situationwhenit comes to the relationship between
stress, anxiety, and insomnia. In some cases, stress andanxiety can cause
insomnia, as the mental and emotional effects ofthese conditions can make it
difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep. In other cases, insomnia can
causestress and anxiety, as the lack of sleep can make it difficult to
concentrateand function effectively during the day, leading to
increasedfeelings of stress and anxiety. It is also possible for a person to
experienceboth stress and insomnia independently of one another, with one
conditionexacerbating the other. Inany case, it is important to address both
stress and insomnia in order toimprove overall mental and physical health. This
can be done througha combination of healthy lifestyle habits, relaxation
techniques, and in somecases, medication or therapy.

Q7           Whydo Indian trains run late in any weather?

A7           Prasanna Bhalerao, Knows abouttrains.7h

Trains run late fora multitude of reasons. Some are natural cause, some are
issues with the infrastructure and more oftenthan not the fault of passengers:

Natural factors: All trains on the line get delayeddue to this

Rain, fog,inclemental weather

Natural disasterssuch as landlside, floods, etc.

Accidents on thetracks or at level crossing

Infrastructure:

Tracks and overheadcatenery damaged

Signal failure

Routine repairs andmaintenance

Finally overcrowding/traffic the tracks. We all know how even a multi-lane
highway gets choked up when there is too muchtraffic. The IRtracks are running
to maximum capacity on trunk routes.

Caused by passengers:

Chain pulling. People get left at the platform.Chains are pulled. This causes a
delay of 2 minutes at least

Chain pulling at places where trains don’t stop;such incident delay the train
by at least 15 minutes (stop, investigate, start)

One train delayedcauses a ripple effect that affects all other following
trains. There are some high priority classtrains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi,
Duronto, Vande Bharat/Tejas, etc.The IR would like to keep these trains running
on time as far as possible. So if some train ahead is delaying, those trains are
stopped at some station to let these priority trains overtake.

My note- I don’tthink it is a good practice to hold up no priority trains.
There could bepassengers travelling on emergency in them.

Q8           Howmany rivers pass through India's largest city?

A8           Devala Rees, Hindu practitioner andscholar of Pagan religions16h

Five.

India’s largest city by area is Pune; by population, itis Mumbai. But
coincidentally, both of these cities have five rivers passingthrough them.

The Mula,Mutha, Pawana, Ram, and Dev rivers pass through Pune, and the Dahisar,
Poisar,Oshiwara, Mithi, and Tansa rivers pass through Mumbai.

Q9           Doeseating a heavy breakfast make you feel better than having no
breakfast?

A9           Ayush Nair, Software Engineer andTech Blogger23h

I never eatbreakfast, and I think not eating anything in the morning has a lot
ofbenefits. First ofall, it helps in keeping the blood insulin levels in
control. Theless spike in your blood insulin levels, the better it is for your
body.

Also, not consuming breakfast means you are fasting till lunch, whichmeans
your body is fasting for around 15 hours. Regular fasting hascountless benefits
for your body, you should check it out online. Also, I have noticed that all
the times I do eat breakfast, I feel hungrierthroughout the day.Being empty
stomach all morning helps me control my appetite and focuson my work.

My note- I have posted this QA for personal experience byindividuals. I do not
think not having breakfast is a good idea. Many days I have slept up to 11
AM,not getting sleep till 2 AM or 3 AM and eat Breakfast at 11.30 AM. But I
used to feel hungry again by 1.30 PM and have my lunch. Starving stomach is not
agood idea.

Q10         Isthe culture of India changing?

A10         Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, Lives inKolkata, West Bengal, India
(1996–present)18h

One thing that Ihave noticed recently and I am sure many of you must have
noticed is how wedding invites are sentnowadays. Even till 5 years back,
wedding invites were printed oncards. You would go to a card designer, give an
advanced order of this manycards and go there once again to collect them. You
would then have to applysindoor to the card envelopes, insert a card into each
envelope and physicallygo to everyone's house to give them the card and invite
them to the wedding.

This is whatwedding invites used to look like! On average, each card used to
cost 20–50 rupees for amiddle-class wedding and each side would have at least
100 cards on average tobe printed. This meant 5,000 rupees were invested in
wedding cardsonly. Now, imagine the bus fare, taxi fare to visit each of those
100 familiesand then, with every visit, you had to carry sweets or something as
well. Justinviting them and sharing the card used to be such a costly affair!

Now, things aregradually changing. Last year, I got one such invite and this
year, all thethree invites that I have received follow the same suit.

The physical cards have now been replaced with digitalcards sent over WhatsApp.
The cards look more elegant, more stylish and you could hire a freelance graphic
illustrator and they wouldhappily design it for you. And then, you can share
the soft copy of the cardwith your friends, colleagues, relatives for
absolutely free of cost overWhatsApp. You only needto bear a one-time cost of
the designer.

You need not travelto everyone's house. You need not worry about how many cards
need to beprinted. So it becomes a more simple, convenient and economical
option. Lately, everybody is switchingto this new way of sending invites.

My note- Is itnot a sterio invitation? I am of the opinion invitation letter
has to be sentand call on phone and invite. Probably my reservative mind.
