*Easy Walking Can Keep Blood Sugar Healthy, Says Study*

If you expect to be eating well and relaxing during the winter holidays, a
recent study has some advice to share: taking a few short walks every day
might be a good idea.

Even taking breaks to stand up could be good for you.

These activities have been shown to be better at keeping our blood sugar at
a healthy level after eating, when compared to long periods of sitting.

High levels of sugar in the blood after eating can increase the risk of
things like heart disease and diabetes.

A paper by researchers in the UK and Ireland looked at seven studies on
this subject.

They wanted to find out what existing research had to say about the effect
of interrupting periods of sitting with short, easy walking and simply
standing up.

Previous research has shown that spending a lot of time sitting down can
lead to a number of different health problems.

But according to this paper, even small changes could make a difference.

The studies they looked at asked participants to stand or do some easy
walking at regular times during the day.

In one, participants had to stand or to walk for two minutes every 20
minutes, while in another they were asked to do these things for 5 minutes
every 30 minutes.

Looking at the data, the paper concluded that regularly getting up from the
chair or the sofa to stand for a short time could have a positive impact on
blood sugar levels.

But a short, easy walk is even better — something we can all do while still
enjoying the winter holidays.
