Q1         Whatare the biggest misconceptions Indians have about USA?

A1          Samantha Kannan, Founder atUngaEnglish.com Updated 4y

A lot of peoplethink that the US is the end-all be-all. It's the greatest place
onearth, everyone is rich, everyone is gorgeous, everyone is ready to have sex
at anytime. But it's not like that at all.

It's just acountry. And under the current political administration, a pretty
racist andxenophobic one. In cities people are pretty great, but small towns
and thesoutheast (especially small towns in the southeast) may not be the
greatest. Ihave a friend who tried to buy petrol down there and was refused
service.

Most Indians that I know in the US earn more than mostAmericans that I know. I
grew up in a pretty poor city toa relatively poor family and don’t know anyone
personally who earns more than$30-40k per year. On the other hand, I don’t know
any Indians earning less than$50k per year.. even one earning half million per
year. I used to live withthat family in a $3 million house.

The only place you'll see only gorgeous people is LA andHollywood where plastic
surgery and botox are super common.Anywhere else, we're allaverage.

I've mentioned thisbefore, but a lot of us do have morals.. I promise. We
aren't like how you see us in your movies, thesame as you aren’t how we see you
in our movies.

There are a lotmore ways but these are the most common misconceptions I've seen.

Q2         Istravelling to Vietnam comparable to Thailand? What’s the main
differencebetween both countries?

A2          Rafael S. Phillips, Like Travel? Getup to 90% off flights w Mighty
Travels! Dec 18

Travelling toVietnam and Thailand both offer unique experiences.

The main difference between the two countries is theirculture.

In Vietnam, you will find a more traditional way of lifewith ancient temples,
pagodas, and bustling markets that are full of localflavor.

In Thailand, you will find a more modern atmosphere withplenty of nightlife
options and beach resorts for relaxation or adventureactivities like snorkeling
or diving.

Both countries havestunning landscapes to explore but in different ways - from
the lush green ricepaddies in Vietnam to the white sand beaches in Thailand!

Q3         Canhumans survive -30 degrees celsius?

A3          Mats Andersson, Lives in Sweden Dec 16

If you’reproperly dressed, yes.Practicallyindefinitely.

If you ever findyourself in that sort of temperature and aren’t properly
dressed for it, youbasically have two options.

If you’re dressedfor a few degrees below freezing, and are a long way from
shelter, you can digyourself into the snow. Snowis a marvellous insulator, and
your body heat will actually keep a small cavitysurprisingly warm. Leave
something brightly coloured on top of thesnow so that rescuers can spot you.

If you’re basically only dressed for indoors, your onlyoption is to start
running. You can easily generate enough body heat to keepyou comfortable for a
while, provided there’s not a strongwind. (Air that cold doesn’t hold a lot of
energy and tends not to have anystrong winds.) Take care not to start to sweat,
since that will get you inserious trouble once you run out of energy—which
happens a lot faster in lowtemperatures.

Once you’re tiredenough to just keel over, you’re done for unless you are found
inside a coupleof hours.

Where I live, the northern half of the country sees temperaturesthat low
regularly, and it’s -16 Celsius outside my window right now.Still, it’s
extremely rare that people freeze to death—it’s basicallyonly people who get
dead drunk and fall asleep in a snowdrift. Apparently, though, it’sa relatively
pleasant way to go: they are often found half undressed, as ifthey felt very
warm at the end.

Q4         Whydo humans need a doctor to cut the umbilical cord after birth but
other mammalsdon’t?

A4          Jim Roper, Ph.D. in Ecology andEvolutionary Biology, University of
Pennsylvania (Graduated 1996)2y

Humans do not have to cut it by means of a doctor. It’sjust that with
civilization, we’ve decided that biting it, eating it, simplybreaking it, or
just letting it dry andfall off are no longer thought to be the best choices.
Other mammals don’t havethe choice.

Q5         Isthere a reason why some buildings have so many lights on at night?

A5          Gopalkrishna Vishwanath, RetiredStructural Engineer & language and
internet/social media enthusiast. Thu

I live in aretirement home. Our lights are on all night for security reasons.

This is how a partof the outside of the building looks when the lights are on.

This picture wastaken early in the morning, before sunrise by my friend and
co-resident VasukiRao.

Some of us, who areearly risers go for a walk and many do not leave the
building. We walk allaround the building and each trip around the building
yields 330 metres. Sothree rounds yield one kilometer.

There are two gatesand both are manned by security guards. So we feel safe.

My note- In Chennai for decades there is warningby Police to keep a night lamp
switch ON in the portico or sit out. When out ofstation most keep the front as
well as side lights ON. This is in addition to CCTV by many. CCTVhas become
common in most homes.

Q6         Ihave never been good at keeping a clean house. No matter how often
I clean, italways seems to get messy again. What are some tips for keeping a
clean house?

A6          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

It means your cleaning is not proper. If you take a little time and clean
properly the messy stage will not happen.Vegetable cut should be kept in
separate cover. The plastic items should bekept in another, Surely the wet
items like pieces from dish, coffee powderremains in filter after preparing
decoction etc should be kept in another coverin waste box. Vesselsmust be
cleaned first hand and kept in sink. Care should be taken to ensurewater is not
falling in slippery floor, ensure an absorbing cloth isplaced over water
spilled etc.

Laziness is a reason messy appearance.Cooking gas stove has to be cleaned in
the morning and gas top stove should notbe cleaned for any reasons when it is
hot.

Q8         Whatcan I pour down my bathroom sink to make it smell better?

A8          Initial Hygiene India,100 years ofexperience with customized
business solutions1y

Whenever yourbathroom sink develops an odor caused by clogs, pipe blockages,
and bacteria –

You can plug the sink, fill it with hot water, addbleach, and then let it go
down the drain. The bleach will kill the bacteria.

Boiling water alone poured down a drain can also help ineliminating odors
caused by bacteria.

A third option is to mix equal parts of vinegar andbaking soda. As fizz comes
up, you can pour it down the drain, then follow itwith hot water and let it sit
for at least an hour.

You can also optfor the Drainscopy method. It's an inspection system to detect
and diagnose theunreachable areas of the drain quickly. It is a great solution
that is a littleless harsh than bleach.

My note- Now we have drain cleaning powderpack in Chennai. After pouring clean
water, sprinkle the powder over the drainarea and pour small quantity of water.
Close the door. After an hour foul smell willbe vanished. Strong cleaning
agents like phynol can be diluted andpoured for quick solution.

Q9         Howmuch would the first car in history be worth today if it were
still around?

A9          Stefan Gebhardt, Studied at MunichUniversity of Applied Sciences
Dec 21

The first car isstill around. This is a replica, but the real one is in a
museum, and it stillruns. They turn it ononce a year or so. Back then it cost
600 Goldmark (sorry, norReichsmark, my mistake), whichwould be 21,500 Euro
today. A working replica like in the photo goesfor 50,000 Euros. Theactual real
one isn't for sale and will never be for sale, so it's basicallypriceless.

Q10               Whydid nearly every civilization invent the wheel while the
Native Americans didnot?

A10        Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Thu

Primitive wheels, the ones people start with, are very hardwork to make, and
wheeled vehicles are only useful over certain types ofterrain. The Inca, for
example, had roads most of whichwere mountain tracks, so they used pack
animals. The people of the plains travelled long distancesacross plains covered
with long grass so they used the travois, which had noaxle for the grass to
wrap around.

To use wheeledvehicles they would have had to build hugely long roads which
would be moretrouble than they were worth.

Q11               Whattypes of food do Indians eat that people from other parts
of the world dislike?

A11        Rujuta Gole, Works at Fidel Softech 6y

I could recall onedish that was downright rejected by my Japanese friends (who
otherwise bravelytry everything offered to them).

This one is pretty famous in all parts of India and goesby various names like
dahi-bhaat or dahi-butti (yogurt rice).

It's a simplerecipe that mixes yogurt and rice together and is relished
frequently in myhome. Now, when I mentioned this recipe to my Japanese friends,
they weretotally against the idea of putting yogurt in rice. I forced one of
the more'adventurous' to try it anyway, and as expected (by them), he couldn't
bringhimself to gulp down more than one morsel. Polite as they are, they
didn'tcriticize it, but I could understand their despair from their faces. :D

P.S. I know a dishthey can't refuse though, it's none other than besanache
ladoo (besan keladdoo).

Q12               Isthere actually any more safe coach in Indian trains in case
of derailment?

A12        Answered by Prasanna Bhalerao, Nov 16

LHB coaches are anti-roll, anti-collapse andanti-telescopic. What does it mean?

Anti-roll: Thecoach won’t roll like a cylinder topsy-turvy and res upside down.
See picsbelow:

At most the LHBcoach may tip and rest over on its side.

Anti-roll alsoprevents one coach going over another coach as seen below with
ICF rake:

Anti-collapse andAnti-telescope: In case of an impact, one coach won’t collapse
and crush. Onecoach won’t intrude into another coach like a collapsing
telescope…
