Hanuman chalisa is recited in north regularly. However on verse in Hanuman chalisa , rendered in the 16th century has these words of a verse: जुग सहस्त्र जोजन पर भानू। लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू।। Considering the Sun to be a sweet fruit, Hanuman jumped to swallow it. JUGA SAHASRASCHA JOJANA PARA BHANU= JUGA IS YUGA; SAHASRACHA IS 1000; JOJANA IS YOJANA THE DISTANCE MEASUREMENT; PARA IS IN THE SPACE; BHANU IS THE SUN. One maha yuga or 4 (chatur) yugas is 43,20,000 years ; Brahma divine year in 360 normal years is a divine year; if so one maha yuga is 4320000 / 360= 12000 devine years. one juga or yuga is 12000 devine years ; and sahasracha is 1000; Juga sahasratcha is 12000 X 1000= yojanas the verse says. juga sahasratcha yojana; 12000x 1000 yojanas. is 12 million yojanas. One yojana is 8 to 9 miles. This is also confirmed in Manu-samhita: "etad dwadasha sahasram devanam yugamuchyate" 12000 X1000 deva yugam. yuga-sahasra-yojana = 12000 x 1000 yojanas.Yojana is a Vedic measure of distance and approximately equals 8 miles (according to Vishnu purana). And 1 mile = 1.60934 kilometers. Distance between Sun and Earth = 12000 x 1000 yojanas = 96 million miles = 153.6 million kms, which is very much close to modern calculations!However, the orbit of the Earth is not a perfect circle, but an ellipse. Sometimes the Earth is closer to the Sun and sometimes it is farther. Shortest distance between Sun and Earth (perihelion) = 91 million miles = 147 million kms (early January). Thus the distance between earth and SUN is given in the 16th century itself. However the composer had read vedas where Rig Vedam spoke about it as seen from the Sayana translation which I gave a long time ago. This was placed in the manusmriti followed by Vishnu puranam. This is incorporated in Hanuman chalisa verse. And those who think Vedas are not science, and whosoever think west alone after 1800 AD founded was science, got to think deep. KR IRS 11223
