Shiva Sankalpa Sukta Mantra Mantra 1 Analysis
Whatever destiny appears to be far away from the awakened is the same as
that of the sleeping. STATEMENT.
The distant light is the only light of the lights, so may my mind be full
of auspicious resolutions.
Conclusion
That which rises far away from the awake and comes away from the sleeping
is the light of the lights, the one destiny, and may that be the resolution
of my mind to Lord Shiva.
Simple meaning
O Supreme Being! The mind which goes far and wide in the awake state and
also goes far and far in the sleeping state is the only light of the
sense-like lights, that is, a light that illuminates the senses, or the
mind that is the illuminator of the senses May our minds be filled with
auspicious and welfare resolutions!
Explanation
In the first mantra of the Shiva Sankalpa Sukta, the sage says that in the
awakened state (JAKRATHA STATE) , the mind travels far and wide. It is His
nature to be always moving and there is no limit to His speed. The mind is
endowed with such powerful abilities that it reaches beyond the distant
horizon even though it is situated in one place. He is the fastest of the
fastest things.
The moon was born of the mind (Soma; somnambulism in English; denote the
MIND; Soma also means MOON.) CHANDRA MA MANASE JATHA RIG VEDAM.
This is a scripture. The Upanishads say that the mind is the moon. The mind
is the Brahma of sacrifice. MUKTHI (Mrkti?) is the same. Here the mind and
the mind’s mind, refer to the very intense and infinite movement of the
thoughts raised in the mind. Anything can be achieved by condensing the
mind and the thoughts of the mind. He requires no base. In fact, the mind
is stable when it is not disturbed and free from distraction. The mind
confused by objects attains the state of disintegration. The unstable and
restless mind does not allow man to be free and binds him in new bondages.
To live in the awakened state, one is entangled in the behaviour of the
world and the worldly worlds, so one goes far away, because it is the mind
that inspires the person to do karma.
The first verse of the third Kandika of the Gayatri Upanishad states ‘Mana
eva savita’, meaning that the mind is the Savita or motivating element.
This dynamic of the mind is also seen in the sleeping state. (SWAPNA STATE)
The mind gets amazing strength because of the calmness of the mind in
sleep. It is said that while sleeping he is united with his Creator, who is
actually the source of peace. Shri Vinoba Bhave says in the introduction to
his book Mahaguha that “... sleep is in harmony with the infinite.” The
peace obtained here becomes the guide for the journey of the coming day.
This is the reason why a person who is in a state of insomnia at night gets
up the next morning and feels tired and anxious. No material means can make
up for the lack of immediate peace received from God. It is another thing
that when one wakes up, one does not remember the things of sleep, one
feels peace only, because it comes from the spiritual realm. { Jakradha and
the Swapna state act in contra distinction , unable to remember, the
happenings in the dream state).
The sages have called the mind the illuminator of the senses while praying
to God {ज्योतिषां ज्योतिरेकम्} {Jyothisham jyothirkam from light to light)
LIGHT BRAHMAM LIGHTING THE MINI BRAHMAM THE MIND.
One of the lights of the lights Jyothisham Jyothirakam
Through the mind all the senses receive knowledge of their respective
objects. Taste is not the taste but the mind, the eye-catching sights are
pleasing to the mind, otherwise the moon rays showering nectar seem to be
showering fire. The sense of speech speaks and the sense of hearing hears
what the mind inspires. It is this mind that makes the sensations received
from the sense of touch pleasant and painful, soft and hard. All the senses
perform their own functions, but the mind plays an important role in the
perception of their perceptions, which cannot be denied. Hindi writer Shri
Balakrishna Bhatt in his essay ‘Mind and Eye’ describes the mind as the
lord of all the senses and gives examples from the scriptures:
The mind is the only thing that can be done in this world, but the body is
not the only thing that can be done. {मनःकृतं कृतं लोके न शरीरं कृतं कृतं ।
(MANA KRUTHAM KRUTHAM LOKE; NA SHAREERAM KRUTHAM KRUTHAM)
This means that in the world, only what is done by the mind is done, not
what is done by the body. This mind is the divine medium of the living
entity, the initiator of the senses. The mind is called the sixth sense by
philosophers and this sixth sense is far more powerful than all the other
senses. This means that the illuminator of the senses, which are called
'lights', is the mind. The sages of the Yajurveda have seen and recognized
this divine light within the human mind, therefore calling it Jyotisham
Jyotirekam, the sages pray that O God! May our minds be filled with the
best and welfare resolutions! KR IRS 11223
